Texas not tolerating wandering eyes

Feb 9, 2013, 7:50 AM

and some question Dabo about having the same views

"What we'll tell guys, 'Don't commit to us unless it's over and you want to come.' Then the message we get, if you're committed to us and you're looking, that's a simple message, we're going to look, too," Brown told reporters. "If we find somebody as good as you that wants to come, you're looking around, we'll take them. I think that's fair."

I certainly don't question this approach. It makes complete sense to tell recruits to only commit after all other schools are eliminated. It is bad publicity for a school to have decommits and the word "commitment" should mean just what it has always meant. It should be locked in as their word that they will represent our university from the moment they tell the coach that they want to play here. Like Coach Scott said in an article on here, we want Clemson kind of guys with the kind of character showing they keep promises - if only there was a foolproof way to know who these guys are from the beginning in all cases.

It should be mentioned that Texas signed its smallest class

in years.

I think the policy is sound, but you can end up with low #'s on signing day if you're not careful.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That make no sense. If you let recruits commit, and

Feb 9, 2013, 9:14 AM

continue to take visits, you have a much greater chance of losing them than if they don't take other visits. Telling them you will take their commitment, and allowing them to visit other schools does not give you any greater chance of landing a large or small class.

It was a planned small class

That's according to an interview I saw with Mack Brown.

Recruiting is a three ring circus. Need early enrollment date.

Feb 9, 2013, 8:14 AM

it's crazy these kids who draw this process out, just to make their big announcement and put the hat on. Got to feed that ego though I guess. Schools are wasting tons of money on this process. The nkemdiche announcement was a joke. We knew where he was going, why make an announcement? Especially when two other players in his school were taking scholarships. I would think it would be a special day for all three. Momma wanted to be sure her political agenda was met....ughhhh

I think RN really thought he would be a Tiger after his visit but his mother and all the daily harrassment from the AJC wore on him to the point he had to go back on his word. In the long run, I think he will look back with at least some regrets that he did not keep this promise.

I agree that a mid way signing day would solve a lot of the ship jumping. But every time you fix something, the kids or coaches will find a way to break something else in the line.

Cute how she dressed her sons up in matching suspenders and red bow ties.

Feb 9, 2013, 8:32 AM

yes RN would have signed at Clemson. I can understand some of these kids struggle with a decision and some just really love the attention and milk it for all it is worth.

As long as Dabo

Feb 9, 2013, 9:47 AM

keeps bringing in top 15 classes and landing mostly 4 star players his policy is working out.
Recruiting is Dabos strongest quality.
He does an incredible job closing the deal.
Early commits are going to happen and it appears equally challenging to keep them as it is to get them in the first place.
It takes a mature 18 year old to resist all the attention.

Their female track coach had a similar problem too so can't blame you for thinking that.

Re: Texas not tolerating wandering eyes

It is a great policy, but obviously we are not using it anymore. If a recruit is committed and still taking visits, then Clemson is not committed to them and still looking as well.

Here is the issue however. Lets put ourselves in their shoes. If I am a 18 year old kid and I have an opportunity to see all of these wonderful atmospheres, ladies, and football stadiums (even though I am fully committed to Clemson) why in the heck would I not go and have some fun. I think this is where many of the extra visits come from with recruits that are already committed. Heck, one of my dreams right now would be to travel to a high profile school/stadium each year to see a big game. They get to do it for free.

My only request would be to state publicly that I am 100% committed to such and such school, but I only get one chance to visit all these other great schools and campuses.

Re: Texas not tolerating wandering eyes

I agree with Brown on this point, even though I am not a fan of his. To me, this is like a marriage. How many of us would say, "Honey, I want to marry you in a year, but I am planning to take official visits with several other women over the next year just to make sure you are the right one for me. But I am 100% committed, don't worry." I know a few might think this way, but I doubt anyone could get away with this.

This is why I agree with Dabo's point that there should be an early signing period to address the "50% commit" issue.

Majik beat me to it

Feb 9, 2013, 12:20 PM

I thought this was about Major Applewhite. Then I'd ask, How has Rick Barnes lasted so long there?

Anyway, I was surprised that UT didn't sign ANY 5-star recruits this year. Usually they just pick & choose.

I wonder how long Mack Brown stays. It doesn't seem like anyone listens to him anymore.

Got zero problem with the way we recruit. If your looking we are looking. If your truly committed to us we lock it down. Swinney is up front with all of this to every prospect. A lot of times he tries to talk them out of committing.
