Clemson Football Program In the Future
Apr 20, 2016, 1:18 PM

I am a huge Clemson fan. Something has been bothering me for a long time. I don't know if Clemson's success has been skyrocketing because of Dabo. Honestly, it's all because of Deshawn Watson. I mean he is a gifted football player. When he leaves for pro I honestly think Clemson will have at least one loss per season. Anyone agree? I love him as a player...he will have great future in pro.

Count how many teams in college football lose 1 or more games in the season and you'll be counting for a while. Count how many lose 1 or less and you're not counting long, maybe a dozen teams at most. If you just look at D1 power conference teams, it's much less.
From 2000 through 2016, no team averaged 1 loss per year. tOSU came closest and they averaged over 2 losses a year. Here are the top Power 5 teams average losses over that period.
Boise St.1.9 tOSU - 2.2 Oklahoma - 2.4 TCU & LSU - 28 Oregon - 2.9 USC - 3.1 Texas - 3.2 Georgia - 3.2 FSU & Alabama - 3.4
BTW, Clemson lost an average of 3.9 games over that period behind Utah, VPI, Louisville, Florida, and Wisconsin.
Over the last 6 years, it gets better. Alabama lost an average of 1.2 games a year; FSU 1.7, tOSU and Oregon 1.8, and Clemson lost an average of 2 games a year.
So, if Clemson continues to lose an average of 2 games a year, winning an average between 11 and 13 will we be saying that Dabo wasn't really that good. It was all Watson and we should go find ourselves a coach who can win? If that's the OP's point, then I nominate this for most idiotic post of the decade.

I'm almost positive Clemson defeats Scar in 2016. Why don't we worry about this year.

I am not worried about this year. I think Clemson will reach the college football playoff this year....Why? Because of DW4!

Okay. All I can say is after DW4 leaves a new quarterback would have to play harder to match DW4's performance in order to reach the college football playoff.

as long as our recruiting continues at the level it has been we.........AND FSU will be just fine (btw saying FSU "fell apart" is a little much, they took a step back b/c macguire/golson werent very good.......they now have 2 "elite" QBs competing this year......time will tell)
if our recruiting starts slipping then it will be a different story, but until then enjoy the ride.

IMO he's the main reason.
Our defense was (somehow) better in 2014, but we wound up with 3 losses due to bad QB play. I'm relatively convinced that if Watson stays healthy for that whole season (and starts the UGA game), we would have played for--and probably won--the NC that year.

I agree with you. Our defense sometimes plays awful. So that means a new quarterback would have to play harder to match DW4's performance.

Yes, but in my opinion we don't necessarily need to have an equal to DW4 in order to get there. We simply need a better option than Cole Stoudt. Fortunately, our recruiting at quarterback has been stellar over the past couple of years, so odds are we'll be in a good position to succeed.

3 types teams
1. Teams that run a special system and succeed (Oregon, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech)
2. Teams who get a special player and succeed (Florida, Auburn, FSU)
3. Teams that build a program and sustain success (Alabama, Ohio State)
Clemson we have made a progression over Dabo's head coaching career.
1. Clemson hired Chad Morris and quickly showed success. Leading to ...
2. Chad & Dabo landing DW4 and playing in the national championship game. Followed By?
3. Clemson's sustained success on the field lead to gains in recruiting and retention of coaches pushing them close to achieving sustained success as a program.

I think it's hard not to put FSU & Florida in that third group too. Obviously UF doesn't fit the bill anymore, but during the Urban years they were incredible and it wasn't just due to Tebow.
FSU has been a wrecking ball for years now, and they show no signs of slowing down. They deserve to be in that third category as well.
Auburn is the absolute perfect example for that second category.

It's not ALL because of DW, though he has played a large role in the growth of the program. CDS has done a tremendous job putting the right people in place and developing the entire product on and off the field. That said, I think the upward swing started with the efforts of CDS combined with #10 to #2.

Remember, the team with the best QB actually lost the National Championship last year. We lost with a vastly-superior QB.
DeShawn is a phenomenal, and no doubt we'll miss him when he leaves. Just like we missed Vic, Sammy, Spiller, etc... Dabo is has been awesome for Clemson. The attention we're getting is a direct result of his accomplishments, and the players he recruits.
So, as long as Dabo and Clemson remain in lock-step I'm not even a little worried about our success after DeShawn leaves. Go Tigers!

I'm not sure anyone has to come even close to what DW4 is. This years offense will be unreal and the Defense will have time get better and 2017 the defense will take over and carry the offense until the offense will come along. We are very young on Defense but also very skilled. the recruiting is unreal and since when did Bama have a QB. Our QB's in the future will be better than most QB's in the country and with our receivers we'll be fine just make take a few games to get going. Go Tigers

Dabo and his staff are a far better staff than the crooked coaches and roster Cheezit put together at Auburn. There's a reason he was fired and it wasn't because he lost a good QB.
One may try to argue FSU should have more national championships in Jimbo's 6 seasons, but having 1 and being 3rd in America in wins during his tenure isn't poor either. Obviously you have no clue how hard it is to win national titles. Regardless, would you rather Dabo and company or Jimbo and company?
You do get credit though for admitting Muschump sucks. Man what a raging dumpster fire down down there in Columbia. That has to be embarrassing.

VY was an incredible QB, but he wasn't the whole team. In the two years before VY, Texas went 22-4 (85% win pct) and won the Cotton Bowl. During his tenure, they went 34-4 (89% win pct), and won two Rose Bowls, including a national title game. In the four years after VY, Texas went 45-8 (85% win pct), won the Fiesta Bowl and lost a national title game.
There's no doubt Vince Young was an incredible player, but Texas wasn't falling apart without him.

Stuck with Muschump and the only hope you have left is that Clemson will drop off like Auburn did with cheatin' Cheezik. With that as your only hope, it's got to be a horrible feeling going into the years to come.
By the way, FSU is 3rd in the country in wins during Jimbo's 6 seasons including a national title. Are you going to explain how they've fallen off? ..Because they don't have multiple national titles in Jimbo's 6 seasons? Plus you didn't answer the question - would you rather have Dabo or Jimbo?
You also didn't answer - do you anticipate winning more than 3 games this year? Acting like a worried Clemson fan is doing nothing for the reality you're facing.

Honestly Dabo is a great coach but will he be like Urban Meyer after DW4 leaves. I don't know. Lets see. Hey, come on. I was trying to predict where Clemson would be after DW4's departure. If Clemson continues to reach the college football playoff after DW4 leaves then I would have a lot of respect for Dabo. Absolutely. Right now I think Clemson's success has gone through the roof bec of DW4, not because of Dabo. This is my honest assessment of the football program.

You don't understand my argument. My main question s that will Clemson reach the college football playoff without DW4? It does not matter if Clemson recruits so many good players into the football program. If Dabo continues to go to the college football playoff with Clemson and without DW4 I would have 100 percent respect for Dabo. Period.

5 that you haven't answered.
The one I'm most interested in right now is - do you think Muschamp will be able to find 3 wins next season?

[ in reply to Re: You poor thing. ] |

The summary is - you hope Clemson falls off after Watson because you know your program is going to suck really bad (even worse than usual) for years to come with Boom the Clown leading the way.
Instead of silly rhetoric, let's discuss some real football. Answer some questions please:
- Who are the top 5 college football coaches in America right now?
- Would you rather have Dabo Swinney, Jimbo Fisher, Gene Cheezik, or Mack Brown?
- Do you think South Carolina will win more than 3 games this year? If yes, how many and who will you beat?

Who are the top 5 college football coaches in America right now?
1) Nick Saban (Alabama) 2) Urban Meyer (OSU) 3) Jim Harbaugh (Michigan) He is my favorite coach even though Clemson is my favorite team.
I mentioned the only top three above. In order for Dabo to reach the best coach group he must prove that he can take Clemson to the college football playoff without DW4.
- Would you rather have Dabo Swinney, Jimbo Fisher, Gene Cheezik, or Mack Brown?
I like Dabo but he needs to prove himself first without DW4. To answer your question I would rather have Jim Harbaugh. If Dabo reaches the college football playoff without DW4 then I would rather have him or Jim Harbaugh.
- Do you think South Carolina will win more than 3 games this year? If yes, how many and who will you beat?
I don't care about South Carolina. Muschamp would get fired again.

I am afraid so.
Texas and Young.
Oregon and Mariota
Florida State and Winston
Auburn and Winston
Will Clemson and Watson be similar to above? I hope not. Dabo must prove himself that he can take Clemson to the college football playoff without DW4. TCan he do it? This is the most interesting question.

We consistently have gotten better since 2009 and you think it is all because of DW? Yes he is a part of why we are so good right now but he is not why we are headed in the right direction. Why would you think we will fall off when we have gotten better every year? 11-2 is pretty dang good dude and we did that with Tajh. Beating your Urban Meyer.

Why do you even question that? We can for sure make it back. We have gotten better each year I believe we will only continue to get better why would we stop now because one player leaving? You probably thought we wouldn't be a top 25 team without CJ and probably not a top 10 without Sammy. Am I correct?

Folks gave credit to Chad Morris, then he left we got better. When DW leaves we'll be better, maybe not at the QB position but that's not the critical part of our offense. We're set up to continually to replentish our lines.

The QB position isn't the critical part of our offense?! QB is far & away the most critical part of our offense and it's not close! This offense hinges on the dual-threat capabilities of its QB.
Let's think of the differences between this offense in 2014 & 2015. Watson has great downfield throwing capability, so the safeties have to play deep. He can also run the ball, which forces the front 7 to respect him, creating far more lanes for Gallman, and much easier blocking assignments for our line. Compare that to 2014, when our QB couldn't run and couldn't throw well deep...opponents loaded 8 in the box and brought up the safeties because there was no threat of a deep pass. They also didn't have to respect our QB running the football, so they could focus on the RB and overwhelm our offensive line with numbers. Without a good dual threat QB, this offense falls apart. That isn't to say it needs DW to be successful, but it needs a particular style of QB in order to be run properly.
The jury is also still out on our offensive coordinators IMO. There are many cases where a top-level coach leaves a position and the team does great for a year before taking a big step backwards. Early 2000s Miami and last year's Oregon team come to mind. I have faith that our OCs are going to do well, but let's get a larger sample before suggesting we're better off without Chad Morris.

With no worse than a top 10 recruiting class coming in 2017. Including 2 top 10 QBs in the country, in addition to Z Cooper.

I was trying to warn every tiger fan about the Clemson football program in the future without DW4. If you have the ability to think then you should look at Texas-Young, Florida State-WInston and Aurburn-Newton. The next one could be Clemson-Watson. Let's pray that Clemson will continue to stay in the top 4 for a long time after Watson leaves but I don't really have high hopes. He is special. Trust me.

When you can't spell our star player's name correctly after all the hype and recognition he's received at Clemson, it's hard to take your concerns very seriously.
Spelling his name Deshawn is something Clemson fans were doing when he first gave us his verbal several years ago.
It's something rival fans are still doing fairly frequently.

Nobody questions the value of a truly elite QB...and yeah, they're worth 2-3 games a year. We were 10-3 in 2014 and a Top-15 team - as opposed to a National Title contender - without him.
Alabama is maybe the one team in the nation that has successfully de-emphasized the QB position. They won with a very mediocre, former FSU third-stringer (I kid you not) last year...of course, they also had Travis Henry and a future NFL O-line ahead of him and explosive skill guys all over the perimeter, and maybe the best Front 7 in college football. They still needed some special-teams trickery to overcome the issues Watson presented them or they would have lost that game.
Just how it goes. The only thing Clemson can do is run a system that is appealing to elite QB's, recruit sufficient skill talent that other potential elite QB's will very much want to be a part of that team, and go forth and recruit guys like that. You know, like Zerrick Cooper, Hunter Johnson, and Chase Brice.
Cooper looks, to me, like a slightly taller, slightly slower version of Deshaun Watson. Same unhurried, calm demeanor in the pocket, same effortless athleticism, same kind of golden arm.
Hunter Johnson is just a remarkable passer. You can see why he's a 5-star per most everybody. Guy strongly reminds me of Seth Russell out at Baylor. Considered a pro-style guy but he is also not shy about pulling it down and running with it and he's effective when he does.
ATL area high school coaches rave about Chase Brice. There are three elite FCS-level QB's coming out of the Atlanta area this next year and Brice is considered the best of them...and he's one of the most-grounded, classy, polite guys you'll ever meet. Another tall, athletic guy with a live arm.
So...that's not one guy, but three potentially elite prospects who could legitimately succeed Watson. And that's not even including the guys we currently have on campus.
By the way...if you're counting on FSU's QB woes to continue post-Winston (which lasted all of 1 year)...don't. They've got two more guys in the pipe, Deandre Francois and Malik Henry, who look super-elite themselves. FSU will be Back (alas), and they will probably be Back This Year if Francois is as good as he looked in their Spring Game. That late October matchup in Doak could be an absolute dogfight.

IMHO, we beat FSU down there with DW4 this year, and we groom his replacement sufficiently to stay on a par with The Noles @ QB when they have to come to Clemson the next year. We have set the stage to be extra strong at QB for years to come.
Of course anything can happen with injuries and transfers etc, and we could somehow end up with a void such as FSU had when they put all their eggs in Winston's basket and then had to try to shore things up via transfer.
I like to believe we've planned for succession at QB better than FSU did, but a lot sort of rides on Zerrick Cooper and Kelly Bryant.

What would make the season a failure? Not making the playoff? There are only FOUR teams left standing at the end, it's highly unlikely that we will be one of them every year.
I say we win at least 10 games in 2017. No reason to think otherwise. One thing is for sure, we won't be sniffing 3-9 anytime soon!
