TD run by Hartman

Nov 6, 2023, 10:13 AM

I was watching the game highlights at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFMQH8Xki3s.

During Hartman's TD run (7:50 mark), it looks to me like J. Trotter could have blasted him on the sideline, but pulled up, thinking he was going out of bounds. Tough decision to make - I'm not blaming Trotter, but I'm guessing that had Trotter gone for the stop, Hartman would've stepped out of bounds, taken the hit, and drawn a flag for 15 yards. Smart, but I hate that the sideline is such a weapon in cases like that. Great blocking by the ND WR as well on that play.

I thought I saw some holding on that play as well.

You can see Wiggins pull up early on Hartman's run at the 10:10 mark too. Players are so afraid to hit the QB, especially near the sideline. Trotter probably thought Lukas would do better at forcing Hartman out and was protecting against a cut inside.

Agree 100%… the rules in college and pros has made defenders scared or atleast very cautious about hitting qbs and Hartman was right on the side line and looked like he was gonna step out…. Trotter def had a shot at him but that’s unfortunately what the game is now.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I thought so too at first but if you watch the 2nd replay, it looks like a good block

little like they're going into a slide... defenders about to blow him up pull up too... then he keeps running for a few more yards.

so that now if the QB starts a slide, he's down to avoid such situations like Kenny Pickett in the ACCCG a couple years ago. And the ball is down at the location the QB is holding it when he started his slide. This cost us a first down at Duke when Klubnik started his slide too early or should have dove.

Once they cross that line of scrimmage you just have to use your head, not be stupid, but not just give it all up either. At least attempt to shove out of bounds. You treat them just like a RB at that point.
