Talking about "Handles"...

Oct 25, 2022, 11:44 AM

Who can remember your CB Radio "Handle" back in the day?
Mine was "The Artful Dodger" from the Dickens 1838 novel Oliver Twist.
Sounds kind of gay now, but I thought it was cool back in the 70's.

on the cb radio in the car and hearing a female voice say “bedroom bandit, this is the mattress lady, come over.”

I’ve never seen my dad move so fast as he did to change the station.

Must be a lot of youngsters on TigerNet today. I figure many of you "ole gummers" would like to pass along your "colorful" CB handles from back in the day. The youngsters today never got the chance to actually be "on the air". Anyone with access to a CB could listen in.

Used them in our work trucks but our truck numbers were our handles.
They were pretty strict on how we used our radios.

a CB - I guess I figured they wouldn't fit into my Corvettes. Or maybe I was not cool.

My '78 has a stock AM-FM CB 8-track. Bought it new, still an almost daily driver.

Listen to all the fancy millionaires talking. I couldn't afford a CB much less a car to put it in. Had to hang out with my 'rich' friends to practice my CB talk.

"Breaker breaker one-nine, this is Hillbilly Tiger. Get your ears on. If you're north down and bound to Hotlanta, you better back it down. We got a Smokey in a plain wrapper. Add to it a draggin wagon with a dung beetle, and all the rubbernecks. I'm 10-10 on the side good buddy." (yet I can't remeber what I had for luch yesterday)

After freshman year I had jury duty over the summer, 95% of the cases were for weed possession or stolen CBs.

I was too young and missed out on the whole CB craze of the 1970's. I was only 11 when three families car pooled to Kentucky for summer vacation to a state park resort and I got to ride in my best friend's car. They had installed a CB radio and we spent a lot of time listening to the truckers and others talking. No cells phones then, so if you were car pooling long distances it was either use a CB or use hand signals!
When I got in the work world, I heard stories about high school kids playing 'CB tag'. Its where one car gets a head start and the others would have to track them down by using the CB radios. The car being chased was required to reply honestly to questions about where they were by using marker references like 'just past the old red barn' or 'east of the Jones Road bridge' or some such thing. Sounded like a lot of fun!

older brother was a CB radio freak in the early 70s. Had the big antenna on the house and all that gear. I remember late at night we'd all gather around and he would be talking to somebody in Amsterdam, Paris, etc. I think he called it "skip bounces"(?) or whatever, that allowed him to talk such long distances. I never understood the technology or techniques... not sure it was all legal.
