Taisun Phommachanh

With the season ending injury to Zach Pyron, and Simm's refusal to play, it looks like GaTech will start Taisun Phommachanh this Saturday against the Heels. There's very little tape on him so it may be difficult to prepare for him this week.
I know he spent three years at Clemson and didn't crack the lineup (With Trever, understandable). What's he like as a player? Did he ever play any meaningful minutes while he was on campus?

He never got a chance at Clemson. IMO he is at least equal to DJ when he is healthy. Remember he had an Achilles Heel injury and recovered slowly. He certainly showed he could do it in the spring game where he was injured. I’ll be surprised If he doesn’t do well in a starting role.

Very similar to Cade. When Dabo put him in he would give him 1 or 2 series then yank him. I remember one game he led a TD scoring drive. On the next drive I think he had a few first downs then punt. Took him out after that. DJ was really struggling and I couldn't believe they wouldn't even give TP a whole quarter to prove himself. Deja Vu!

If you go back and read some of the DJ rant threads you’d think the Puma was the second coming of peak Mike Vick, DW4 and TB12, all in a single player. Truth is he struggled to get meaningful playing time but was recovering from an Achilles injury in his final year at Clemson. He’s athletic but struggles with accuracy. I wouldn’t be worried about him going full Justin Fields mode and wish him luck this weekend. Any player who suffers an Achilles injury and gets back out on the field, that’s an admirable accomplishment.

Great kid. Came in at a very competitive time at the QB spot. Got injured and was always going to be a backup. He's more a runner than a thrower. Probably like a watered-down Kelly Bryant.

I saw him as being similar to Kelly Bryant. He's got talent and looks good at times. But I wouldn't want him as my starting QB.

Thanks for the comments and insight. My only worry is that UNC's defense generally makes every QB look like a Heisman contender for one week.

Actually, he had a strong arm so he COULD throw it into the ocean. The problem was he COULDN'T hit the broad side of a barn...

To be fair, once they glassed in the sheep barn it didn't seem like a good practice target any more.

He had a few solid drives his last year where he was able to operate the RPO with no intentions of a pass pretty well. Had he not dislocated his shoulder I am sure he would have gotten some more opportunities towards the end of the season.
Probably would have been best in the G5.

He battled an Achilles injury and a shoulder injury during his time at Clemson. He’s a pretty athletic kid when he's healthy and he will be a threat to run, but his accuracy throwing the ball has always been suspect.

If we're being honest
Nov 15, 2022, 5:01 PM
|

No one knows what Puma's ceiling is because after a strong showing at the end of the Spring Game last year, he tore his Achilles on the last drive.
Personally, I thought the offense ran smoother with him in the game last year and by the time he appeared to be in line to get more playing time, he injured his shoulder at the end of a TD drive against UCONN.
Ultimately, if you're wanting a scouting report you'd probably be better off visiting the GT boards as almost no one here is going to be able to tell you much outside of a few moment last year where he ran the ball or overthrew a receiver.

Those who say TP couldn’t throw the ball must watch the games with their eyes closed when Hollywood is playing!
DJ doesn’t have a Snowballs chance of playing in the NFL and we are stuck with him for at least another season, IF that comes to be watch Clemson football decline. You are as good as your QB.
