Swimming in the ocean

11

Jun 16, 2023, 7:30 AM

How many of you swim in the ocean and do not think about sharks? I did as a youngster, but you could not pay me to do that now.

Not concerned about sharks one bit. I'm a diver/boater/surfer.

nope, not swimming in the ocean. A pool is just fine by me and even then I do not really care for it.

I still do. For some reason, I feel "safer" if there is someone else with me. But the ex-Ms. Mole never would swim in the surf, nor would her family. When we would vacation with them, I was the "fool" out there risking my life.

I actually went into the water to get away from them!

Sharks vs. inlaws. It's not a difficult decision.

I go to the beach to play golf everyday. I may see the ocean a couple hours a day when I’m there. Have not been in a few years though. I am more of a mountain trip kind of guy now a days.

Same here. I grew up on the coast and then lived in South Florida and St. Thomas as an adult. Wouldn’t care if I never went to the beach again. But I will hike 7-8 miles along a mountain stream to see a waterfall.

There is nothing better than catching a strong body surf all the way into shore. That said you probably won't catch me swimming alone in over the head deep water in the ocean.

I friend that taught diving told his classes that if the shark isn't bigger than you not to worry too much and even if it is you aren't part of it's menu. As long as you don't do anything to disturb it or attract it, like spearfishing, you are usually OK. But if it's a Great White all bets are off!

The only other thing I would add is there is some added risk if in murky or stirred up water. But more people are killed by traffic accidents and struck by lightning than shark attacks.

They are also big, dumb animals that make dire mistakes...

5

Jun 16, 2023, 8:05 AM

but yeah, the chances are lower than some other life threatening or maiming happenings.

Lara & I were at Ramp 34 in Avon when this took place, the attack was south of us toward the Pier.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2001/09/06/survivor-of-shark-attack-able-to-speak/7fc855c2-3ee3-4aca-ae2e-b982260da8d6/

Growing up in St. Petersburg, FLA, I have a healthy respect for those animals. It's a good swimming tip about murky water as sharks & rays aren't just sight feeders. If the wind is coming off the beach for a good amount of time, the water will churn murky, which is a bad time for mistakes.

That was the only attack I "witnessed", but HI & Ocracroke have had their share. And yep, bigger things...

This is late 90s, just North of Avon pier where the attack took place. We only swam on the big island, inviting trouble to swim the sloughs along HI.

Will always <3 HI, the sounds, the barriers there and below.

I will swim in anything....ocean, lake, pond, river, stream, pool, ditch, flooded road, reservoir, anything, it dont matter. I certainly aint skeered of sharks.

Me! But only when I'm there!

6

Jun 16, 2023, 8:14 AM

(hahaha, I crack myself up)

Sharks don't bother me. They've always been out there. Always will be out there. The reason shark attacks/bites (I hesitate to call most of them "attacks" because most aren't - they're simply people bumping into sharks, sharks taking a self-defense/get out of my way bite, and then letting go when they realize you're not a fish) make the news is because there are so few, so any one, anywhere in the world, makes news.

It's a heckuvalot safer than driving down 85 or 95 or 26 or whatever to get to the beach! THAT scares me far more than swimming in the ocean.

4

Jun 16, 2023, 8:15 AM

Looks like a ton of fun. I'm a certified SCUBA diver and unfortunately don't get to get in the water much to dive anymore, but I've seen sharks when diving, as well as barracuda and other "predators" and there's never an issue. Would love to do a shark dive, though (not the cage dive, but a real shark dive).

3

Seems like there are more sharks now.....probably due to all their stupid protections. Last time the fam and I were at the beach down on IOP I had the girls out a little deeper than we probably should have been. About a minute after we came back to shore I saw a good sized black tip right in the exact spot we had been. Not to mention great whites are being seen around the sc beaches now. Not worth the risk.
