Can leadership be developed or it is a natural trait that some have?
There an old saylng that “leaders are born not made”,
I would like to see a coach who can help players develop in to leaders … if that’s possible
Boulware would be a good Man to develop this kind of fire into players .
Thoughts. !???!

you can teach people to be better leaders. And some, can learn from experiences to be leaders or better leaders. But there are certainly innate characteristics that some can never overcome. So truth is I think there is nature AND nurture. This is why recruiting is so important. And I would suggest teachers are similar (with regards to learning). There are some who will lead no matter what you do. And there are some who will not lead no matter what you do. There may be some in the very middle who you make a difference with.

I think it's mostly nature. You can't teach some things.

Teaching, coaching and leading isn't just following a protocol. It is a type of relationship. It involves (requires) empathy. You can not teach empathy. You can teach mechanical analysis of non-verbal communication and you can teach language skills.... but that is only a slice of empathy. Empathy is overwhelmingly nature.

This post is the one I align to the most.
I would also add this in terms of leadership in the general sense. Showing empathy does not mean always giving someone the news they want to hear. It means, doing what is needed and saying what needs to be said and making calls that need to be made - "as CONSISTENTLY and as EMPATHETIC as you can. All while keeping the best interest of the team as a whole at the forefront at all times! Sometimes it means you have to upset people. Sometimes it isn't a great scene - but a natural leader can read the room. Because they have taken the time to know the people they are leading! They will know how to motivate them on their level. Coordinate and quarterback all those personalities into a winning team that works well together! Because through demonstrating through actions; the natural leader has shown the people they lead they care about them and are a genuine person. Being genuine gains trust. Trust gets people to buy in more and so on.

Exactly right about the dual nature of empathy.

People mix it up with sympathy. Empathy is being able to see through another person's eyes. Stepping outside yourself and into (at least partially) other people. You can do anything with this ability. You can hurt people, you can help people, you can beat them in poker/chess... but it's absolutely necessary to be a leader. You can sense whatever input a person needs to get the output you want.

Some people are natural leaders, but get better by working at it. Just like some are natural musicians, athletes or physicists. Others, who may not have the same natural born gift(s), can get better through hard work, but their ceiling is considerably lower.

I'm not a natural leader as I take an introspective and analytical approach on most things, a bit of an introvert.
I think back to the movie 'Alive' from 1993. It is a good study on "natural" leadership. The team captain takes leadership at the on-set of the plane crash, and does a good job when hope was still high for rescue but as the situation became more bleak, he lost his confidence and his leadership skills dropped. And when he died there was a void in the rank leadership.
The smart-alec, wise guy of the team who was anything but an obvious leader ended up taking a leadership role out of what appeared to be necessity. his "pessimistic" attitude turned out to just be a realist view which was what was needed to make hard decisions.
Anyway, I digress.

I think that some ARE just "natural born leaders." But,

there are also great leaders who only realize that leadership potential after enduring "trial by fire", so to speak. Thus far, it appears this team has not found either version, and one is sadly needed.

Leaders are born because they lead by being who they are, not who they are taught to be. Those people can only manage but never truly lead.
Also, people are either sheep, wolves or goats.
Sheep mindlessly follow. Wolves exploit the weak. Goats DGAF, just eat grass and keep moving.
