Strength and conditioning

Every team is going to have their share of injuries. When you have several seasons of abnormal amount of injuries there's a problem. The first place to look is the off season workouts. This team doesn't look physical at all. We thought the D line would be great, they have been a disappointment. The O line has been a huge disappointment. It just seems something is missing from a strength and conditioning standpoint.

It all started after Batson had his heart surgery. Look up the timing!

Nah it all started 20 years ago when Batson was hired and decided to train football players like power lifters.

Honestly that part of the staff could use an upgrade like no other. This too has been an ongoing thing. Some of these guys are not even close to looking like college players. Not quite enough meat on the bones. The pads have been saving them for sure but the overall look on our guys is a little small an frail looking.

I see other teams and their athletic looks seem like they are definitely putting in that work.....not like Georgia Tech used to on the sidelines but some of these defensive backs on other teams look as big as Trotter.

Then why have we been putting so many players in the NFL the last 12 years

DJU has the genetics to blow up. Pacific Islanders are 80 percent more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic whites, and it's not a personal behavioral failing. It's 100% genetic.

Batson has been there since 1996 or 1997 after West replaced Gary Wade.

I do not know this, but Batson has to be the longest tenured strength coach in the NCAA. Greenlee was a GA in 1997.

Batson transformed the industry and changed his workouts with coaching changes to adapt to the style of offense we played. Under West, the conditioning workout at the first day of fall camp was 18, 100 meter sprints with 30 seconds rest in between. Three different time standards based on position.

When Bowden came in, the strength and conditioning program changed to and the conditioning test on the first day of camp was a 1 mile run and 300 meter shuttle run. That year (1999) we lost some great football players b/c they would not do well in the Tommy Bowden/Rich Rod offense. We lost great lineman like Corey Husley who left to go for a short career in the NFL. He was a beast that dominated with West's offense. We lost a great FB in Vinny Chirchui, who went on to BC and switched to LB and played a long time in the NFL. We never huddled one time in the 1999 6-6 season which included losses to FSU and V Tech with Michael Vick (they played each other in the natty that year) and Marshall who went undefeated with Chad Pennington at QB.

What I am saying is Batson is not the issue.... injuries happen. We were very lucky during our run on not having a lot of injuries. The last few years have not been like that, but I do think overall, compared to other teams, we are dealing with the average number of injuries. It sucks, but it is what it is. Next man up.

Next man up...

Nov 3, 2023, 8:10 AM

I think you hit the nail on the head there. I think the issue isn't the number of injuries themselves, but the lack of depth and most positions. I've seen several posts this morning asking "if Tate's out then who is in the rotation?" Granted I don't know every player on the roster, but we're 9 games in and we don't know who our backup linemen are. And then this leads into why haven't we used to the portal to offset some of our lack of depth? Why are we relying on true freshman to compete against 6th year seniors at some positions?

All fair and relevant questions....

The talk all pre-season was how deep we were on OL. We lost 2 guys... If we don't know who the eighth man is by now... we never will.

And that is a coaching/development problem.

I hear it every football game I watch about this OL out, that OL out... true freshman starting at LT or RT... every team deals with this. Its not new.

Re: Next man up...

And another interesting thing is..... Our O line goes up against our DL all spring ball... all fall camp. We have had one of the best DLs in the nation.

How does our O line not improve after going against them? I know they hold guys out in spring ball. How does Tate get a confidence problem and mentally have to sit out the year after trying to block TD, PWoo and RO all camp??

That has blown my mind for a few years now....

It might have been two or three years ago when we had BV, but I remember our O line being so bad, they intentionally sat TD and Breese in the spring and I think BV was told to stand down and do no stunts or blitzes so our O line would gain confidence.

Mostly agree! However, Batson DID NOT “Transform the Industry”. He adapted his Training to that of the Late Louie Simmons — The Founder of the Westside Barbell Club in Columbus, OH. Again, it’s great for Powerlifting, but not as good for Football Players!

The entire team has evidently taken the que of Coach Eason and gone Vegan with a touch of THC. Seems their Yoga classes have become more important than the off season S&C programs. We use to pass the "get off the bus eye test" with flying colors. Not any more. Look at Bama players. Look at UGA Players. The difference is startling and it is becoming more and more obvious that Clemson is losing the off season battle in S&C. However, we are winning in Psyops, PTSD and Yoga exercises.......hands down.
