Back in the 80s

Jul 8, 2022, 11:11 AM

People laughed about lacrosse in the south. My freshman year (84) there was a kid on my hall in Johnstone that was from Boston. He had his stick hanging on the wall. We used to tease him about lacrosse. Back then kids from up north that played lacrosse in high school would hang out on Bowman Field. It didn’t take long for them to discover each other and form a little pack! All joking aside, if I remember correctly, they had a men’s club team back then.

Still have a Men's Club team....

Jul 8, 2022, 11:15 AM

The Tiger LAX Club is very good. Made the national tourney to the quarter finals. They play at a top level for Club sports. I would love to see them go sanctioned NCAA. You easily have a combo soccer, women's ;ax and men's lax field. I am like you never paid any attention until my kid waanted to play HS lax in Charlotte. He played Club at App State. It is a fun sport.

I saw them play about 2 years back. They played the UGA men's club team in #######, GA (about 30 miles north of Atlanta) at an elementary school that has a regulation football field attached (which I've only seen used for LAX.

basically an exhibition for the local LAX club, but pulled in a couple hundred people to watch.

It was a win for the good guys.

It’s a bad ### sport. Those guys are very athletic.

Jul 8, 2022, 1:36 PM [ in reply to Still have a Men's Club team.... ]

It’s a lot more physical than I think people realize.

As a kid in the south back in the 70s my life was all about the outdoors, hunting and fishing, camping, and of course football and baseball. I also ran track. There was no soccer or lacrosse.

I think here in Charleston Bishop England has a pretty good team and I’m sure at Porter Gaud they play as well.

Charleston Elite is a very good travel lacrosse club. Saw a lot of Porter Gaud shirts when my sons club played them earlier this summer in the Holy City Invitational. Charleston public schools also have lax now too.

Jul 8, 2022, 5:22 PM

My oldest 2 Grandsons started playing it a few years ago. My oldest Grandson is one of the best Faceoff guys in S.C. High School Lacrosse. They both are playing Summer Club Lacrosse Tournaments. I enjoy watching them. It is a fast-paced game. They will be in Georgia this weekend playing.

Not sure how old your grandson is, but if he’s at a recruitable age and he wants to play in college, have him look at Belmont Abbey in Belmont, NC. Husband is the coach there and they always have a good, hard nosed team. Yes, shameless plug lol! He always needs nasty face off men.

Thanks, He will be a senior. Belmont Abbey has already been in touch with him for a few years now.

Jul 10, 2022, 4:33 PM

Thanks again. They just won the whole Tournament in Marietta, Ga. This team has players from Florida to Kentucky on it. My Grandson had a 94% Faceoff win in this Tournament as well as scoring a goal. They Invited him to play in Virginia this Coming Thursday at a one-day Tournament there.

I meant to add Wando to my list of schools in Charleston.

Jul 8, 2022, 7:40 PM [ in reply to Re: It’s a bad ### sport. Those guys are very athletic. ]

If there was ever a community in South Carolina that would embrace high school lacrosse, based purely on demographics, it’s Wando! They are really good in the Olympic sports. I think their girls and boys soccer teams have won numerous state championships.

Charleston really isn’t that big. Only 800,000 people for the entire metro area. That’s Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties. Yet there are some crazy good schools here. Bishop England, Wando, Pinewood prep, & Porter Guad. Plus Ashley Hall, one of the top all girls schools in America.

Do Wando, Bishop England, and Porter Guad have golf?

I can’t imagine those schools not having golf here in the birthplace of golf in America, not to mention arguably the golf capital of America. I’d be willing to bet that from North Myrtle Beach to Hilton head there are probably more golf courses per square mile than anywhere in America. Myrtle Beach alone has over 100 golf courses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It has become more popular in Charleston and Greenville.

Jul 8, 2022, 5:16 PM [ in reply to It’s a bad ### sport. Those guys are very athletic. ]

It’s very popular in Atlanta and has been for a while. Charlotte has some good teams too.

Clemson adding it makes a ton of sense.

I thought about the same thing! This sport was created around playing an ACC schedule. Wonder who they would play without having a conference, if we bolt to the SEC. Also cannot see SEC network showing women's Lacrosse just for one school.

Re: Back in the 80s

Jul 8, 2022, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Back in the 80s ]

I was one of them laughing until I was educated on the sport. Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, created by Native Americans who to this day, hold the game as sacred. It was played by tribes in Canada, the northeast, mid Atlantic, and upper mid west. The game trained young Braves for war and often settled territorial disputes. Modern day lacrosse rules were established post civil war, about the same time as baseball. Lacrosse equipment was harder to mass produce so Wilson, Spalding, Rawlings, etc. focused on producing footballs, baseballs, and basketballs thus making them the more popular sports in the 20th century. Modern day materials and production have helped advance the sport of lacrosse.

My youngest son played lacrosse from ages 6-10 and then went 100% baseball for four years. He fell in love with football last year, his freshman year in high school, and excelled. He decided to not play school baseball and go out for lacrosse to stay in football shape. He ended up lettering his freshman year. He was selected by a high level travel lacrosse club and we have been traveling through NC/SC for tournaments. He’s also playing travel baseball and now school football has started, to say we have been busy is an understatement. This past Spring, I fell in love with lacrosse. At a high school level and above, it is one of the most exciting games to watch live. There is no down time and those dudes beat the crap out of each other. The athleticism needed and speed of the game is unbelievable, as they say, it’s the fastest game on two feet. Instead of track, football players should play lacrosse to cross train. After all, the greatest college lacrosse player of all time was Jim Brown. Will Shipley was a 4 star lacrosse recruit too, Norte Dame wanted him bad.

If you aren’t familiar with the game, I suggest going to see a couple before forming an opinion like I did. I thought it was a rich white yankee sport but times have changed. It’s the fastest growing team sport in the country for a reason, it’s an awesome game!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unfortunately many people here just say it’s a “Yankee sport”

Jul 8, 2022, 5:11 PM

and immediately disregard it. That’s too bad, because it’s a great sport!

"All those 'Fire Brownell' guys can kiss it." -Joseph Girard III

"Everybody needs to know that Coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson." -PJ Hall

I don’t think that attitude is persistent today.

Jul 8, 2022, 11:30 PM

But let’s be honest, back in the 70s and 80s lacrosse was very much a northeast white very upper middle class upper class sport. It was a prep school sport. The liberal media, oh wait that was redundant, never mind, still see it that way today. That’s why Rolling Stone was so willing to embrace the Duke lacrosse scandal because the liberal media was so hungry to believe that those privileged white boys at Duke raped a black girl. The irony is most of those kids came from rich white liberal families up north.

Wasn’t the game called . . .

“Little Brother Go to War” by the Native Americans that invented it?

Going on an old memory with that statement . . . speaks to the severity and toughness of the game . . .

I look forward to seeing us compete!!!

I know all about lacrosse. Even in the 80s when we were teasing our friend we knew what it was. We knew The history. It was the 80s. Get over it. It wasn’t a sport that was played in the south or really a lot of other parts of the country either. It’s called busting your friends balls

Jul 8, 2022, 12:33 PM

which isn't easy in the ACC (a very good lacrosse conference).

Our coach did a great job at Richmond, and has recruited some talented players. I think we will be very pleased with the job she does here.

Impressive. LAX Coach Allison Kwolek seems quite adept at working the transfer portal. Maybe Coach Swinney can get her to take on the transfer portal for football as a side hustle.

Where’s the report on the revenue that will be generated?

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

What about the the men's lacrosse program?

Well, another program that can bring more than one quality transfer in during This off season. Learn from this Coach Brad Brownell...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When I was just a very small child,

Jul 10, 2022, 12:00 PM

Probably less than ten years old, my Dad told me one weekend that he was going to take me to an
“ Indian football game” in Cherokee. It was a short drive to The reservation from upper Spartanburg county and we made the trip one Sunday afternoon.
This was more than seventy years ago but I vividly remember the game. It was very similar to the lacrosse that you see today. The difference in this game was if a player made a bad play the “referee” slashed him with a whip that he carried. At the end of the game, most players had a few red stripes across their backs. Many many years passed before I realized that I had attended a version of lacrosse so many years ago.
Anyone ever heard of this ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
