Stephone Anthony

Oct 23, 2012, 10:20 AM

Is he in the doghouse? hard to believe he played so few snaps while being the teams leading tackler.

Shuey seems to just be more instinctive

Oct 23, 2012, 10:23 AM

eventually the talent that guys like Anthony and Steward have will win out, but right now Shuey just seems to always be around the ball.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it has everything to do with shuey's ability

Oct 23, 2012, 10:32 AM

To recognize what the offense is doing in situations and audible the plays when he needs to. Seems like a really smart LB. Of course Anthony has the physical tools but right now Shuey understands his role more and is executing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, Shuey is just better right now

Oct 23, 2012, 10:34 AM [ in reply to Shuey seems to just be more instinctive ]

Anthony has far more talent and potential, but the defense looks light years better with Shuey in the middle right now. At a minimum it should force Anthony to step his game up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I watched the game back and focused just on Shuey

Oct 23, 2012, 10:36 AM

when the Tigers were on defense and I do believe he is disruptive between the tackles but he is aweful slow at getting to the edges. I believe if he continues to be the starter you will see teams putting in more plays to get out on the edges with screens and sweeps. Shuey is a good tackler and has good instincts but as the saying goes, "speed kills". Against Duke and Maryland I believe you will see a lot more Anthony than Shuey.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^^ This is true. I think we continue to see Shuey vs.

Oct 23, 2012, 10:42 AM

run-heavy offenses and Anthony in coverage situations more (Zone 3-4 sets).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he doesn't overrun plays, but he does have football speed

Oct 23, 2012, 10:49 AM [ in reply to I watched the game back and focused just on Shuey ]

when it matters; the gt safety is a good example.

how much on the edge do you want him to be to make that play? he blew would be tacklers to make the play.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He also seems improved on the edge from the GT game.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's a MIDDLE linebacker. He is not expected to be able to

Oct 23, 2012, 10:52 AM [ in reply to I watched the game back and focused just on Shuey ]

beat a RB to the edges.

HAAH this is true... I saw on play were he beat Christian to

Oct 23, 2012, 10:54 AM

the edge for a tackle when Christian lined up close to the edge before the snap... so there's that LOL

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

actually, he will be targeted to get to the edge in some O

sets. it's[the rb...] his responsibility on certain play calls.

In man coverage, yes. We play a lot of zone though.***

:)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What?? Um yeah, he is...Keith Adams, Leroy Hill....

Oct 23, 2012, 11:13 AM [ in reply to He's a MIDDLE linebacker. He is not expected to be able to ]

Every guy on the team should be able to run. Chad Carson was slow and it was noticeable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhh, teams were killing us on the edge with SA in there too.***

Re: Stephone Anthony

Oct 23, 2012, 10:51 AM

I believe Anthony is a great LB, but I don't thing Mike is his best spot. I could be wrong, but I always thought he needed to be at Will or Sam. Shuey did a great job on Saturday, though. He is a baller!

Re: Stephone Anthony

Oct 23, 2012, 11:08 AM

I've been saying the same thing since last year. He has never looked comfortable to me in the middle.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Anthony is a coverage LB, move him outside!

Oct 23, 2012, 11:20 AM

and let his speed and coverage take over. He is unable to provide run support and shed blocks in the middle. Tony Steward and Shuey have more of the body type you need for the middle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Anthony is a coverage LB, move him outside!

Oct 23, 2012, 3:26 PM

Shuey is okay, but Steward should be the starter in the middle. If he can play on the special teams and run down the field for sixty or seventy yards, he should be able able to cover the diameter of the middle of the defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I trust the guy watching the boys practice daily***

Shuey plays on all of the special teams also.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They need to move Anthony outside

Oct 23, 2012, 11:33 AM

He came in as a top ranked OLB. While he can play all three position's his speed and instincts were based on playing OLB not MIKE. He makes tackles and plays but just from a body type stand point Steward/Shuey/Jones look like your typical MLB while Anthony looks more like a SAM or a WILL

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: They need to move Anthony outside

Oct 23, 2012, 2:48 PM

I think if he moved right now, he would already be better than Quandon Christian. He plays so lazy to me for some reason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Christian has improved drastically....***

Oct 23, 2012, 2:54 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed. He's much better then he was last year

Oct 23, 2012, 3:52 PM

or even early on in this year. He attacks the LOS and attacks blockers head on and normally either makes the plays he should or forces it to someone else. It's because of his improved play that Blanks is seeing more and more time at Safety.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with both of the comments above.

Oct 23, 2012, 4:04 PM

He was one of our biggest liabilities against GT last year. This year against GT he was mostly in position. I've also seen a difference in his desire to fight off blocks and make plays since the beginning of the year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He has trouble getting off blocks and reading routes

Oct 23, 2012, 3:19 PM

He's the leading tackler, but I think that's mainly because he's the MLB, which should be the leading tackler of almost any defense.

Based on what I've seen with my own eyes, he just flat out gets off blocks and makes instinctive plays when he's not blocked in the run game. He doesn't waste any foot movement, he sees where the ball is going and attacks the run.

In the passing game, he covers receivers very well for an MLB with his measurables.

One thing is for sure, our defensive coaches love Christian.
