Spurrier comments from an article in The State

Aug 27, 2012, 2:38 PM

(a huge thanks to Peavy for bringing this to Tigernet)
(bump for those who missed it yesterday)

"South Carolina lost another defensive reserve this weekend as backup safety Sheldon Royster left the team.

Royster, a redshirt freshman who was a four-star prospect out of New Jersey, was not among the team’s top five safeties, secondary coach Grady Brown said.

“I guess it just got to the point where he felt like it would be hard for him to get on the field and maybe he needed to play somewhere else,” Brown said.

Royster became the eighth casualty of fall camp.

Quarterback Tanner McEvoy, cornerback Cadarious Sanders also decided to transfer.

Defensive tackle J.T. Surratt and spur Sharrod Golightly will miss the first three games due to suspension. Cornerback Akeem Auguste (leg, at least four weeks), running back Shon Carson (wrist, at least six weeks) and running back Brandon Wilds (ankle, at least two weeks) suffered injuries.

Coach Steve Spurrier seemed unconcerned with the attrition after Sunday evening’s practice. Auguste is the only starter among the sidelined.

“Oh, you’re talking about backups. Geez,” Spurrier said. “You are worrying about things I don’t worry about. I worry about guys who play. Those guys have never played. I am supposed to worry about guys that never played? I’m not happy it didn’t work out for them, but that’s the way it goes. You can’t play all 85 (scholarship players).”

Not concerned because he needs numbers for the incoming recruiting class.

Spurrier is brutally honest at times.

I don't personally care for the guy, but what he is saying is true with a lot of D1 head coaches. I for one am glad we have a guy like Dabo who I truly believe has his players best interest in mind. Can't say that about Spurrier.

Agreed.

D-1 football can be brutal for those involved.

I had a family friend that was recruited to play D-1 football at an unnamed formerly Mtn West school. "Sorry son, we don't have a scholarship for you this year. Come to school here, pay your own way and wait til next year. Oh, BTW, we're red-shirting you...." The kid comes to school, pays out of state tuition, makes great grades (3.8 or 3.9 if I recall.)

Come spring time the told him that it would be a couple of more years before they can put him on scholarship. He ended up transferring back home and now plays for another D-1 school. Of course he'll now have to sit out a 2nd season. His family is not well off and wen't pretty heavily into debt that first year. I'm sure if school #1 would have been upfront with him to begin with, he would have made other decisions (like singing with an instate school instead of going out of state.) FWIW, he does not play for a SC team.

As much as I love college football this left a sour taste in my mouth. I can imagine similar stuff happens a lot of places.

"Stalwart universities—Harvard, Princeton, Yale—most certainly offer status. The Citadel offers character. "

What a peach.***

Do you have to sign up for GoGamecocks in the State just to read about this?????

Infringement of my First Amendment rights!!!!!!!

I guess he does not realize...

Aug 27, 2012, 4:11 PM

that it is those non starters that make his starters better. Without them in practice, the starters never learn. He also does not realize those non starters are only a few plays away from being a starter. Injuries!

I hope this has a ripple effect on this team.
