Speaking of serious election questions. For you Georgians,

Yea or Nay on creating another state bureaucracy that can overrule local school boards on charter schools?

Nay***

Nay

There is already a mechanism in place to approve Charter schools.

You get denied by local school board you can appeal to the state.

I'm having a hard time finding a rationale for adding

yet another commission as well.

I stopped at "save tax revenue" and voted yes.

Nov 5, 2012, 11:39 AM

good thing my vote doesn't count.

Yes, adding yet another government commission

Nov 5, 2012, 11:57 AM

should save lots of tax revenue.

Wut?

Great question. I'm thinking no for 3 reasons:

Nov 5, 2012, 11:41 AM

Reason 1: I'm just plain confused. Since I'm not certain what the result will be, I'm voting against constitutional amendment. Essentially, my vote will be that the pro-amendment folks haven't made their case.

Reason 2: There are already more than 100 charter schools in the state. What's the advantage of setting up an extra layer of government to expedite the approval process?

Reason 3: Local property tax money should be allocated, locally. That's kind of the point of it.

I'm voting yes...

I think the bureaucrats who control what the teachers do in the classroom could use some competition.

Issue is a little complicated, but I voted No.....

Nov 5, 2012, 12:15 PM

The petitioner already can appeal to the State School Superintendent. At the same time there is also some issues on funding control that I was unclear on.

Basically, based on the parts I was clear on, I voted no. For the funding parts, the assembly proponents have to do a better job making the case for this change to get a yes vote from me.

Yeah, I'm having trouble justifying yet another gov't

Nov 5, 2012, 12:33 PM

entity on the payroll to merely be there to overrule the local entity. Especially when the state entity will be political appointees vs. someone a little more accountable to the voter and taxpayer.

No thanks. For a red state, I'm always surprised to see this kind of thing.
