Dabo Swinney on the idea of leaving Clemson for Alabama

Nov 19, 2015, 1:23 PM

"You don't ever say never. You don't ever know what the circumstances would be at any given time. First of all, Alabama may never, ever call me and I would never have a problem with that. They've got to do what they've got to do. My deal is to be great where I'm at. I had opportunities to leave Alabama. I had opportunities to leave Clemson. But I've just never been that guy about the next job. I'm about the job I've got."

Sounds like he wouldn't push the call to voicemail.***

one thing about going to Alabama

Nov 19, 2015, 1:47 PM

He'd just be another person that won there. What he has done here is special. Clemson is a special place, but it took a special person with the right chemistry to make us special on football again. I love Dabo and hope he retires here, for now I am just going to enjoy this special moment in time

amd while I haven't had this conversation

I know people that have and his wife considers Clemson home now and loves it here. Which I am sure Dabo does too. They are part of the Clemson family. And that is what makes Clemson so special. It is home to all of us

We would have to match Bama's pay and more maybe?

Sounds like he would be interested and listen if they offered.

Coaches are nomadic. Period. They put on this song and dance about this is the only place I ever want to be, but they are business guys as well. If a better opportunity opens up, they will take it. It is a job and a career to them. There is no "holy land" for coaches no matter how much they say they will never ever leave.

DOES THIS BOARD EVER HAVE ANYTHING ON IT THAT IS POSITIVE ABOUT CLEMSON. IF I STARTED A THREAD THAT SAID THE SKY WAS BLUE HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE FOR SOME IDIOT TO SAY SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT CLEMSON.

Nick Saban: December 21, 2006: "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

On January 3, 2007, following a meeting with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga, Saban announced that he had accepted an offer to become Alabama's 27th head coach.

Sadly for us, if Bama really comes calling, it would be hard for Dabo to say no. The only thing working in our favor, IMO, is Dabo has never really struck me as an Ego kind of guy, and the only thing Bama could really offer over us is a chance to get his Ego stroked.

Given what he has invested here, a big part of his life, his kids lives, and all the young men he has coached, it would be a gut wrenching decision for him either way. Hope he never has to make it.

Might want to wait about 5-10 years. He is still making Clemson better and better and as long as he is doing that and Satan is still at Bama, he will stay. Once Satan leaves, he will still probably wait until the successor falls flat on their face and then go home. Or once he feels like he has done all he can do at Clemson.

The SAD truth is THIS ... if he loses ONE game

Nov 19, 2015, 2:15 PM

... over the next 3 weeks, there will be a certain percentage of T-Netters who will be more than willing park a moving van in front of his house in Clemson.

The Coach/Fan relationship is just that tenuous among a certain element (at any school).

EVERYBODY is on the Dabo band wagon right now, but he is only one lose away from having people turn on him.

Especially if that lose is to SCAR.

And because the fans can be THAT fickle, it's hard to just expect that a coach would say he would never leave for another job.

Re: The SAD truth is THIS ... if he loses ONE game

Nov 19, 2015, 2:57 PM

Unfortunately, that's true. I've been, as cheesy as it sounds, all in with Dabo since day one. I was in with CTB as well, but once the decision was made that he was no longer our coach, I wanted Dabo to succeed and win as many games as possible.

2010 was a Tommy-esque year, but since then, we've reaped the benefits of a coach who has poured everything into building our program into one of the nation's best.

I hope he never leaves, but could you really blame him for going to Alabama if that opportunity ever came?

Re: The SAD truth is THIS ... if he loses ONE game

Nov 19, 2015, 2:59 PM [ in reply to The SAD truth is THIS ... if he loses ONE game ]

and the sad truth of the matter is that if Saban should go a few more years without another NC , Bammer fans will turn on him for the next football messiah .

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What does this say about the current state at Bama?

Nov 19, 2015, 2:51 PM

Dont know who asked the question or the context, but a question like that indicates an assumption a vacancy is reasonably foreseeable - at least in the eyes of the one questioning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

good news: dabo's successor won't have a dumpster fire.

Nov 19, 2015, 3:05 PM

he won't have to do the hard work of "changing the culture"..slogans like that never meant much to me until dabo went out and did it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GoTiguhs!!

Clemson will still be Clemson

Nov 19, 2015, 3:27 PM

whether or not Dabo stays or leaves. Good grief--ENJOY THE PRESENT!!! I am starting to feel like I need a happy pill when I visit Tigernet these days.
