O-Line concerns

Sep 1, 2021, 10:22 AM

Yes I think their are concerns on the O-line for UGA. Clemson’s concerns are focused on ability to run the ball because UGAs D-line is not know for rushing the passer. UGA on the other hand is facing a deep Clemson d-line who not only ranked top 15 in run defense but also top 2 in sacks and TFL.

Maybe Clemson is forced to throw the ball against a unproven secondary. UGA may be forced to make something happen on a lot of rushed or broken plays. I will take the former.

It is interesting the UGA fans/Dawgnation host are saying that their behemoth DT Jordan Davis will blow up everything against our interior OL. I know that he is a good player with incredible size, but he has 5 Sacks and 7 TFLs in 3 years. Kind of underwhelming. By comparison, Big Dex had 7 Sacks and 9.5 TFLs as a Freshman. Maybe the light goes on for this kid in his 4th year. We'll see.

It is a different scheme than ours, because their DT do not rush up field much, they just hold/push the line but stay in their lanes. Hence the term eat up the middle.

and for how long they can run before they feign injury.

Measuring NT stats is pretty misguided

Sep 1, 2021, 11:27 AM [ in reply to Re: O-Line concerns ]

Their impact comes from eating up double teams and pushing the pocket in so that the LB's can clean up the play.

Davis is one of, if not, the best nose tackles in the country. He can likely be schemed around and probably doubled most plays but a pocket collapsing from the inside is probably the worst thing for a QB.

I imagine a healthy Putnam and Bockhorst plus whoever is in at LG performs better against Davis than they did Haskell Garrett in the Sugar Bowl but nevertheless UGA's defensive strength is the interior of the DL, which is also the weakest part of the Clemson OL.

Clemson struggled to run the football last year, when we had the best RB in school history. I wouldn't say that our starting 5 will be a lot better than last year. And I know we don't have a RB as good as Etienne was. Soooo, I doubt we run the ball effectively against UGA.

Some truth in this

Sep 1, 2021, 11:32 AM

But teams were also lining up to take away the run so Elliott used the quick pass game as an extension of the running game to get the ball in ETN's hand.

You're absolutely correct that we don't have a RB as good as 2020 ETN but as a group they can be good and I think you'll see Shipley used a lot in the pass game where he should be effective.

I would not expect us to be able to move the ball that well on the ground Saturday but if you view the jet sweeps, screens, and quick passes to the RB's as their way of running the ball it won't look as skewed.

We haven't been able to run the football effectively in the playoffs either, except for 2-3 games. Georgia's defense is built to stop the run. In my opinion, Lyn-J hasn't progressed all that much since he's been at Clemson. The coaches love Kobe Pace and Will Shipley, but I don't think I should expect them to run through Georgia behind our offensive line. Our center spot is questionable and our guards are smaller than you would like. I love our OTs, but our interior is not great. Georgia's interior is great. Jordan Davis is a load and UGA is deep at LB. I just can't see us running the ball well against them.

Our defense is going to have to play lights out. I am confident that they will. I believe we'll have to be carried offensively by Justyn Ross. They have nobody that can guard him. He has to have a huge game. 100+ yards and 1-2 TDs.

Agree with this assessment. My biggest positive is UGA may stop the run but they also are not getting to DJ with just their DL. If DJ can stay composed and take the opportunities as they come I think the offense will be very effective.

Clemson’s DL may give up some running yards. They will definitely go after the QB and force quick reaction.

Mistakes are made in game 1 and clemson is in better position to force mistakes.

That may be true. However, Adam Anderson and Nolan Smith are 2 of the best edge rushers in the country. McFadden and Parks have their work cut out for them. I do believe our WRs/TEs are better than their DBs. If our OTs can play well, DJ should have a good game.

I would not say that is completely fair to the OL.

First, ETN returning for one more year was a surprise and looking at the OL being geared to pass protection for TL's 3rd, it make sense. Yeah, they weren't as strong running but I don't think that all of ETN's woes on strictly on the OL. However, we were top 20 for fewest sacks allowed. Only Bama allowed 1 less sack out of the playoff teams.

Next the depletion in the WR corp hurt as it made a lot of opposing defenses sell towards the run. We did not have a WR with more than 42 points on the season (less than half of ETN). Tee and Ross combined for more points than ETN the previous year - though even ETN point production was down. ETN still averaged 7 yards per play (when you combine his receiving) which is down from 8, but again, I am willing to bet DCs sold out more on ETN in 2020.

Big QB with an accurate cannon and a plethora of large wr's

is going to open the field up for errybody. We couldn't really stretch the field last year with our dearth of wideouts.

We lost 4 starters from the previous season. Bockhorst was not as good as John Simpson, Cade was not as good as Sean Pollard, and Putnam was not as good Cervenka. The interior of our offensive line regressed badly last year. That, coupled with lack of depth, hurt our running game. Sure, schematically teams certainly loaded up the box against us. But, our offensive line took a major step back.

Future Doc - I agree!
If you bracketed Amari last year who else could beat you deep?

Powell was a good possession guy, but you were not going to be super worried about him running past a safety.
Amari often was the only deep threat which as you said, "allowed a lot more aggression to be focused on the line of scrimmage"!

If they try that shizzy this year with Ross, Ladson, Collins, Williams I feel the ability to punish defenses is "cocked and ready to burn them"!

Plus, the OL had to hear all off-season how weak they were and non-physical. And, how Georgia was going to expose them.
I would be shocked if they just roll over and get dominated.
