Some thoughts on the sit-in

Apr 22, 2016, 9:04 PM

I see a lot of folks discounting the "banana" incident and the students' reaction to it. I get that. I'm as far from "PC" as any old codger could possibly be. But I'm not sure that's what's going on here. When I fought with virtually every race and creed this great country has to offer, it became very clear to me that we all share a common bond as Americans...and we all bleed the same way for this great country. But that doesn't mean we don't have our differences, too. Something that would be "water off a duck's back" to me might be a serious affront to others, and let's face it, we Americans are proud people. Our pride, our dignity---are important. If that's what those young folks were standing up for---honor, dignity, pride---good for them.

Pride, like everything else, is a double-edged sword....

too little and people often don't really "strive" or "endeavor" or "power through";

too much and... well, it go-ith before the Fall, as they say.

In fact I'd like to relate that in my career I have been in 20+ turnaround companies,

not as a "see-you-every-other-month" consultant, but generally as a principal;

and I've never been in a company that was failing because of competition.

No; simply put, they all were failing because of Egos (pride) within the company.

I think the issue people are innately feeling in this instance is that,

while "bananas" are in incredibly bad taste, as such they overtly belittle the architects of the "joke"

than they ever could the targets.

People get this. They really do.

That's because racism is no longer a pandemic or widespread factor in this society,

and it is rightfully dying evermore every day.

And to make such a big deal about three bananas - little more than an impotent joke -

therefore seems more about Pride than anything else -

Pride in the destructive sense, not in the positive sense.

Some things just need to be let go -

it's called "turning the other cheek"...

You can't take it out on an entire race because some turd did something dumb. We don't even know the race or gender of this turd. It might be a black, transgender, homophobic, ADD suffering, wheelchair ridden, gamecoot, atheist with a speech impediment and tourettes syndrome who hates anybody that isn't just exactly like him/her/it.

The whole thing drives me bananas.
