If I'm on the committee, I have to ask and answer one question

After watching 10 teams and 5 conference championship games, do I believe FSU, minus their starting QB, is still 1 of the 4 best teams in the country. If the answer is still yes, then I should vote them in. But if the answer is no, then I should vote for someone else.
The goal for the committee is to try and make sure they get the 4 best teams in the playoffs. It isn't about who has earned it, it is about who deserves it based on their current standing at this point in time. The 4 best teams 3 weeks ago are not the same 4 best teams now. They have to pick based on what they know now and not what they knew then.

Not FSU, not at any point of this season have they been one of the best 4. I think we all know Clemson is better than them despite what happened.

predict the future, evidently. Having to use a backup QB to WIN, should not exclude FSU. There are a whole lot of other players on that team, not just the QB. And, history says not only can a backup compete, they can win the whole thing. Ohio State did it with a THIRD STRING QB, first year of the 4 team Playoff. With nearly a month to prepare, FSU could pull off the same thing.
And if you think Bama is all that impressive, you obviously did not watch SEVERAL of their games this year. Were it not for a MIRACLE LAST week, they would be on the outside looking in with TWO losses.

Difference is that Ohio state team beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the big 10 championship game. Gave the committee no choice but to put them in. The game last night was hot garbage.

I'm sorry for FSU because they had an amazing season but the committee went the way I thought it would go. FSU simply isn't the same team without their starting QB and that obviously was the key consideration for leaving them out.

Exactly. If we just go with who we think are the “best” why not go with the title favorites before the season starts

So, you believe that which is legally earned is not deserved.
The problem as I see it with your thinking, is that a team that has played and won 13 out of 13 games is an objective way to determine the best team. Some committee rationalizing who the the best team is by using subjective BS is not a better way.

You may not agree with my thinking but they did what I thought they would do and chose who they believed to be the 4 best teams right now.

Guess you don’t remember Tom Matte, who was inserted at QB for the Baltimore Colts after they lost their two QBs to injuries? It’s a great story……

Your job as a committee member is to choose the four best teams

using the following criteria…
“For purposes of any four-team playoff, the process will inevitably need to select the four best teams from among several with legitimate claims to participate.
Proposed Selection Process: Establish a selection committee that will be instructed to place an emphasis on winning conference championships, strength of schedule and head‐to‐head competition when comparing teams with similar records and pedigree (treat final determination like a tie‐breaker; apply specific guidelines).”

Not arguing, just pointing out the job of the committee is clear, and so is the criteria. Doesn’t mean that’s what they, or you, would do though.

I argue that undefeated and one loss teams are different and that does not apply unless differentiating two like teams.

Should Clemson be in there then? We’re 4-0 in November. Beat 2 ranked teams. Cover the spread in all! No, that’s ridiculous, because we are 8-4. It has to be about wins and losses

You said it well and concisely. This who's best "right now" garbage is a hot mess of selective bias and inconsistent thinking. You can be dang sure that the minute they need to justify their decision, they won't be so dismissive of what the team did earlier in the year. For example, one of Bama's best data point - their second best data point under their win over UGa, is their early season win over Ole Miss. The same folks who'll say the four best "right now" matters will still point to that early point of Bama's resume, and also point to negative early points of another team's resume (FSU's close call over BC). It's inconsistency all around. "Best Four" is simply subjectivity on steroids.

Sorry. but that's terrible, terrible reasoning . . .

"The goal for the committee is to try and make sure they get the 4 best teams in the playoffs. It isn't about who has earned it, it is about who deserves it based on their current standing at this point in time. The 4 best teams 3 weeks ago are not the same 4 best teams now. They have to pick based on what they know now and not what they knew then."
People can disagree about the philosophy of "best four" vs. "most deserving" if they like, but anyone defending the "best four" philosophy has to deal more consistently with the fact that assessing EITHER who's best OR most deserving, necessarily entails deal with what's on the resume. One prominent difference between the two camps is that most deserving doesn't privilege early vs. late season differences, it embraces the whole resume, while "best four" tends to find reasons to dismiss the parts of the resume that doesn't fit its conclusions about who's best. The result is that the "best four" teams folks will tell you early season wins that help their case are great, whereas early season losses should, in some nebulous sense "count less" b/c, well, the team **improved.**
If the goal of the committee is to get the four best times, that still leaves the question unanswered, "how do you know who's best?" Is it 14,000 % an eyeball test? From beginning to end? If so, then own it. But if not, then tell me what data matters? If it's only privileged, arbitrarily selected late season positive data, rather than less impressive early season data that's arbitrarily dismissed or minimized . . . then justify that? Let's not call that the four best, b/c it's not . . . that's the four teams that are **playing best right now.** But if the season is a marathon, and not a sprint, then this criteria holds no water. None whatsoever.
If we're going to explicitly admit that four best is *NOT** about who "earned it" - then that necessarily means we may in some cases end up giving to those that did NOT earn it (i.e. we're minimizing season results in place of something not just partially subjective, but mostly subjective). There's nothing magical about the "current point in time" (also not part of the committee's charge) that should privilege this over the season as a whole. This kind of philosophy makes a hash of the early season.

You may not agree with my reasoning but it does seem to be similar to the reasoning the committee actually used. I didn't say it was great but it was the way I thought it could go.

but "Best Four" as applied by the folks that are now backing that philosophy is a jumbled mess of hyper-subjectivity and inconsistency.
