So much for paying players! I hate the idea anyway.

Looks like the 'income' isn't really as big as you think. I can't wait to see more of these studies to kill off any thoughts that the schools make millions per year off the individual players.

I have no problem with paying the kids.

Aug 11, 2013, 4:44 PM

Most of them do more work than the average Fortune 500 Executive.

My problem is the unintended consequences from turning our Universities into a Jr NFL league. I think the kids should have to go until they graduate and we should educate them instead of running printing presses that shoot out diplomas.

These guys are young and impressionable. They need to be protected from the pay for play system that would the NCAA would inevitability become.

Socialism is one of the reason this thing will fail.

Aug 11, 2013, 5:23 PM

If ROI isn't in one of the main considerations it's not economically practical. See Econ 101.

Title 9 is far enough.

So now being fair is "socialism"?...

there's a big enough discrepancy NOW between the "deal" football players get compared to other athletes. It doesn't need to be made any bigger. This idea that football players are the only ones that work hard and put their bodies on the line is ridiculous. Football players leave school (either after three or four years) with NO educational debt and a nice start to a pro career. Spurrier thinks that football players should be paid so their parents can come see them play. What a crock. Some of you use the "they come from poor backgrounds" excuse to defend the idea of paying them. Well, there are plenty of other students in the same financial fix and they don't get the opportunity to go to college free because they don't play football. IF those students get to go to college at all, they wind up with mountains of debt they have to pay back when they graduate. "Regular students" that are on scholarship have to maintain a 3.0 average in order to keep most scholarships. All football players have to do is meet the minimum eligibility requirements to stay enrolled and they get to go to school free. Football players have enough advantages over regular students (and other athletes) as it is. Guess the "capitalists" don't understand that. They just want to give more to those that already have more and screw the rest of them.

The players get paid a plenty - tuition, three meals a day through dietitian, lodging, tutors. And most wouldn't have been able to get into the universities if not for being athletes,

i agree. i hate it when hard working kids get paid. they should do it for the love of the game. and the ones with paper routes ought to give their money to school principal.

i hate it when teachers and police and firefighters get paid too. most of the time, they aren't doing anything but sitting around. and they should do it for the love of society anyhow.

What athletes are you going to pay?

What about partial scholarships and walkons?

It's time to return college football to STUDENT athletes.

Aug 11, 2013, 5:15 PM

The prima donna players who think the NCAA owes them money are kidding themselves. If all of those great athletes dropped out of college football, and average joe students were playing football, fans would still be huge fans of college football. It would all be about my school beating someone else's school. Those prima donna players should appreciate the value of a college education, the cost of a meal plan and housing 365 days a year, plus perks like shorts and shirts and being admired by fans. Lots of college students work to play for tuition, food and housing ---- and still they get loans. When is the last time you heard of a football player needing a loan to play for their education?

The ones that really profit from jersey sales...

are the apparel companies.

Protect the players

Aug 11, 2013, 6:55 PM

Making the players employees could provide the protection they sorely need. Many programs drop players after injury, and these kids often do not have health insurance or the ability to pay for treatment and rehab. It's a really sad thing.
