So, we are pretty much exactly where we were in Purnell's last season

14 years later under Brad.

21-9 regular season in 2009-2010 and 2 games over .500 in the ACC (9-7). Today, with Brad's big breakthrough roster, we are 21-10 in the regular and 11-9 in the ACC. Both teams earned a 6-seed in the ACCT.

Purnell's ACC sent 6 teams to the NCAA, 50% of the league then. This year's ACC will send 4, maybe 5, out of the 15 teams we now play.

Purnell's last squad earned a 7-seed in the NCAA. We are likely slotted for a 6 after last night, and TBD after what's ahead in the ACCT.

After a long enough time of getting largely nowhere, it's easy to forget where it was you were actually trying to go in the first place. This team still has an opportunity to remind us of where that was I guess, but time sure is fleeting.

Go Tigers.

Purnell had pretty much topped out as well, at the end. But, his top was better

than current. The league was tougher, and yet we still made the NCAA more often. Oliver's style of pressing defense wore our guys out during the regular season, and by tournament time, there wasn't much gas left in the tank, unfortunately. Brad can't say that. We don't even HAVE a defined style, which is part of our problem.

So making the dance and losing in the first round is better?

than making the NIT and losing first round at home?

Perhaps. What’s your point? Is it that 3 times in 13 years is good?

No - the point was to move forward. Continue making the tournament - regularly - but begin advancing. Gain the experience to make a Sweet Sixteen, then an Elite Eight. Keep chipping away on the way to national relevance.

Maybe it is. Maybe he had plateaued, too.

2003–04 Clemson 10–18 3–13 9th
2004–05 Clemson 16–16 5–11 9th NIT First Round
2005–06 Clemson 19–15 7–9 9th NIT Second Round
2006–07 Clemson 25–11 7–9 T–8th NIT Runner-Up
2007–08 Clemson 24–10 10–6 3rd NCAA Division I First Round
2008–09 Clemson 23–9 9–7 T–5th NCAA Division I First Round
2009–10 Clemson 21–11 9–7 T–5th NCAA Division I First Round

OP's teams played for an ACCT championship, too. Brownell has never been there.

Looking at OPs last four years and the mess he was handed when he got here

reminds me just how much Brad sucks. Our program under him had an identity and an excitement around it unmatched during the Brad era. The conference was much tougher back then too.

I posted something including this thought a little while back. To further the point, attendance was on an upward trend under OP, as well, while going the other direction with BB.

Im sorry folks, but 7 years and 14 years is apples and oranges as far as coaching careers at the same school.

The fact that Purnell took over a dumpster fire in Shyatt and was going to his third straight NCAAT after the first few years of rebuilding job, is not the same as about going to his 4th NCAAT in 14 years in Coach Brownell.

Yeah, their are those that say that Oliver Purnell was about to hit the wall with his program after three straight NCAAT 1st round loses, but it was still in its early stages of a program especially now considering how long Coach Brownell has had at Clemson.

The ACC was also a lot stronger conference nationally and finishing 5th or 6th was probably going to put you in the NCAAT securily, rather than for a lot of teams on the bubble like last season and this season.

Maybe if Clemson had the same support in Athletics as it did under first DRad and now under his former top assistant Graham Neff regarding improved facility upgrades, and increased coaching saleries and budgets things would have been different for Coach Purnell to not want to leave for a dead end program in Depaul.

Oliver Purnell was even turned down for Final Four tickets for his wife and family the last few seasons for cut backs from the AD.

We will never know because that is history now, but get tired of that argument.

Agree with everything. Extra bullet point - Brownell didn’t win a round of 64 game until season 8. The First Four win shouldn’t be compared to other coaches since it didn’t exist prior. We have no idea what Purnell would have done but comparing any aspect of Brownell years 8+ is apples to oranges.

We kept having NCAA games against lower seeds from smaller conferences with fast senior guards.

They were a horrible matchup for the press.

It didn't help that our teams couldn't shoot or hit free throws.

Purnell was also competitive in ACC Tournament.***
