Apr 20, 2017, 2:23 PM

I'm going with:

Creekside
Smoking Pig
Melvin's

Flame (or smoke) away

Those first two are the only two I frequent

Of course we kind of live in the same area

Duke's BBQ

Apr 20, 2017, 2:28 PM

in Orangeburg and dozens of other Lowcountry towns for 50+ years.

When I was a little boy and the family went out to eat, it was most always to Duke's. And I got me a big plate of hash and rice. That's all I wanted. The hash and rice.

Hash

Apr 20, 2017, 2:30 PM

is definitely a SC thing.

Rice

Apr 20, 2017, 2:37 PM

is even MORE definitely a SC thing, esp. Lowcountry.

Not sure I ever had a meal before my 16th birthday that didn't involve rice of some kind on the table.
White rice, beans and rice, red rice, chicken perleau, dirty rice, shrimp perleau, jambalaya, yellow rice, BBQ hash and rice......that's all my family ate.

And I still love rice more than anything today.

Always heard that Lowcountry folks had one thing in common with the Chinese ---- they ate rice with every meal. That was more assuredly true in my family.

No, not at all.

Apr 20, 2017, 2:41 PM [ in reply to Hash ]

Why...back in the day, some of the best hash came from Lebanon.

I don't think I've had any beater hash n rice than

Sweatman's in Holly Hill and Lone Star in Santee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You must be talking about Sweatman's in the '80s and '90s

Apr 20, 2017, 2:41 PM

then. Apparently, they fuggin' suck now.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the hash is the only thing that's still good at Sweatmans***

Presuming you're talking about pulled pork,

Apr 20, 2017, 2:39 PM

then it's Scott's (original in Hemingway, new one on King), and then....everybody else.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm gonna go with...

Apr 20, 2017, 2:43 PM

7spots BBQ.

Located on the rickety old patio behind my house. Always served beside slaw and pickles. (Bun is optional.). Vinegar base, mustard base (thin), and tangy ketchup base (similar to KC style but thinner) are the available sauces. Always smoked with hickory and apple wood.

Warning:

1) So good it will make you slap your mama.
2) Be sure to tie a string around your tongue, just in case you swaller it.
3) Pit master may have eaten some of the bark while pulling it. (Pulling the pork not the pork sword.)
4) In case of an erection lasting more than 4 hours seek immediate medical attention.

Carolina BBQ in New Ellington is the best...

Apr 20, 2017, 2:53 PM

pulled pork and/or hash/rice there is (IMO of course).

Asheville's Buxton Hall

Apr 20, 2017, 3:09 PM

close enough or Scott's. Smokin Pig is good.

Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile,
Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!!

You know what?

Apr 20, 2017, 3:17 PM

Smoking Pig is pretty darned underrated in my opinion. I've had better pulled pork, but not many. I've had better brisket, but I had to go to Texas to get it. I've NEVER had better Brunswick stew. I'd throat punch the minister in front of a packed church on Easter Sunday for their stew.

My rankings

Apr 20, 2017, 3:26 PM

I'm in the midlands. Here is a list that I threw together of my best recollections of meals past.

Southern Belly - sandwiches only, but #### good. - 4/5
Maurice's - sorta the standard around the midlands. - 3.5/5
True BBQ - small dump in Triangle City aka Cayce aka West Columbia. - 3/5
Little Pig's - Cola - 3.5/5
Palmetto Pig's - Cola - 3.5/5
Hite's - W. Columbia - carryout only - 4/5
Price's - in Gilbert near the lake. 4/5
Big T's - Cola - 3/5
Doc's - Cola - 3/5 -
Shealy's - Batesburg - overrated buffet - 3.5/5
Belly's - Lexington - carryout only - 4/5
Hudson's - Lexington - garbage buffet - 2/5

TLDR: No really good bbq in the midlands. Southern belly is the best, but they only do sandwiches. Otherwise it's Price's for a buffet, Hite's for carryout, and Maurices for convenience.
All of the other places in town are more or less interchangeable in my opinion.

nowhere and stopped at a BBQ restaurant and had some fantastic BBQ. I have no idea what the place was named or where it was, I only remember it being not far off the interstate. Wish I could remember the name.

Most likely you mean Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q.

Apr 20, 2017, 3:50 PM

Absolutely delicious stuff. I might pick up a can or two of it on the way home!
