Duke's BBQ

in Orangeburg and dozens of other Lowcountry towns for 50+ years.
When I was a little boy and the family went out to eat, it was most always to Duke's. And I got me a big plate of hash and rice. That's all I wanted. The hash and rice.

Rice

is even MORE definitely a SC thing, esp. Lowcountry.
Not sure I ever had a meal before my 16th birthday that didn't involve rice of some kind on the table. White rice, beans and rice, red rice, chicken perleau, dirty rice, shrimp perleau, jambalaya, yellow rice, BBQ hash and rice......that's all my family ate.
And I still love rice more than anything today.
Always heard that Lowcountry folks had one thing in common with the Chinese ---- they ate rice with every meal. That was more assuredly true in my family.

7spots BBQ.
Located on the rickety old patio behind my house. Always served beside slaw and pickles. (Bun is optional.). Vinegar base, mustard base (thin), and tangy ketchup base (similar to KC style but thinner) are the available sauces. Always smoked with hickory and apple wood.
Warning:
1) So good it will make you slap your mama. 2) Be sure to tie a string around your tongue, just in case you swaller it. 3) Pit master may have eaten some of the bark while pulling it. (Pulling the pork not the pork sword.) 4) In case of an erection lasting more than 4 hours seek immediate medical attention.

Smoking Pig is pretty darned underrated in my opinion. I've had better pulled pork, but not many. I've had better brisket, but I had to go to Texas to get it. I've NEVER had better Brunswick stew. I'd throat punch the minister in front of a packed church on Easter Sunday for their stew.

My rankings

I'm in the midlands. Here is a list that I threw together of my best recollections of meals past.
Southern Belly - sandwiches only, but #### good. - 4/5 Maurice's - sorta the standard around the midlands. - 3.5/5 True BBQ - small dump in Triangle City aka Cayce aka West Columbia. - 3/5 Little Pig's - Cola - 3.5/5 Palmetto Pig's - Cola - 3.5/5 Hite's - W. Columbia - carryout only - 4/5 Price's - in Gilbert near the lake. 4/5 Big T's - Cola - 3/5 Doc's - Cola - 3/5 - Shealy's - Batesburg - overrated buffet - 3.5/5 Belly's - Lexington - carryout only - 4/5 Hudson's - Lexington - garbage buffet - 2/5
TLDR: No really good bbq in the midlands. Southern belly is the best, but they only do sandwiches. Otherwise it's Price's for a buffet, Hite's for carryout, and Maurices for convenience. All of the other places in town are more or less interchangeable in my opinion.
