Ship will make an NFL decision and not a transfer decision

I listened to Ship's postgame interview and came away with a couple of thoughts. The decision he is mulling over is whether or not to enter the draft and not the portal. I did not hear a guy who is disgruntled. I heard a guy who is maybe a little disappointed that the season did not quite unfold for himself or the team like he thought it would but he is still happy being a Tiger. He and his family will look at his draft grade and then decide if he should come back another year or enter the draft.

Ship, no matter what you decide, thank you for all you did for us. You were exciting to watch and you always left everything you had out on the field. The future is bright and I, for one, wish you all the best in whatever decision you make.

Now, go have a HUGE game against the dirtpeckers and finish this thing off in style...

If Shipley is considering the draft, he's going to be sorely disappointed. He'll be lucky to make a practice squad. He's way too small, not fast, not really shifty, goes down often with shoestring tackles, and has been up in his coach's face a few times this year. He won't be drafted

The biggest issue with Ship is his balance. I would stay and work in the offseason on exercises and drills that improve balance.

Fumbling is a bigger issue.***

He isnt too small at all. He might have a somewhat different role though. He is bigger than Warrick Dunn at RB. He could also end up like Julian Edelman who was a running back in college.

Edelman was not a running back. He was the quarterback at Kent State.

I stand corrected thanks. Wes Welker was a running back. He can be like that.

He will be a role player at best. He will not get a very good draft grade.

I hope he will come back and complete a very good college career. That is likely all he will get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He isn't tiny but he would be a small back by NFL standards

and he doesn't run with alot of physicality in college. He goes down on 1st contact a good bit of the time. He's fairly slippery, but definitely doesn't have elite moves. He has decent speed, but not elite speed. He's a decent receiver out of the back field, but not an elite one.

Ship is just pretty good at everything, but not great at anything, and I think when he transitions to the NFL where guys are bigger, faster, stronger, etc, he loses quite a few of the advantages he has in college. He would need to work on his pass catching out of the backfield more and maybe from the slot if he wants to really stick at the next level.

Also, he's not particularly good in pass pro so thats not going to help either, especially when backs are asked to block even bigger, stronger guys at the next level.

If that’s the case, I hope he stays one more year and shows out. He isn’t there yet. Needs to grow up a little more.

Delusional

This is more of the same thinking that had Ben B being drafted and making it in the NFL. Reality was far different but the same as Ship. The measurables are not there. You can't run between the tackles at 205 in the NFL. You can't get outside running a 4.55. He's really not good enough to make a practice squad. What is the upside? He's not getting any faster nor is he a late bloomer. He had a full beard when he arrived on Campus at 18. Renfrow is the anomaly that everyone wants to point to but his route running skills and hands were fantastic. And even with all that this appears to be his final year as he only has 13 catches for the season. Hard to buck the combine measurables.

I don't think his game translates that well. I could be wrong, but I don't see it.

..consistently fumbling in the red zone certainly does not translate well to the NFL.

The kid is a very solid college back.

He has a quick burst and plays with a lot of heart. Having said all that, I just don't see him getting drafted in the first 5 or 6 rounds.

Seeing his high school film, I thought he would set the world on fire and be an ETN type of back. I guess my expectations were too high, as ETN is a once-in-twenty-years type of player.

I hope he comes back, and he and Mafa work on ball security this off-season. This is what's holding both of them back in my opinion.

he's projected to go first round. That will cause him to think and eventually he will decide he has unfinished business at Clemson.

I might take 10-12 minutes.

He has no chance in the first 2 rounds. Studs go in the 3rd round at RB. He wont get that either.

Very few RBs go in the first round and Shipley sure isn't. I would think his criteria would be a 3rd or 4th round grade, which I also doubt that he gets. His versatility will help though.

I think a 4th round pick projection, he might go. Anything beyond that and he probably comes back.

Shipley best hope at the NFL is to be a part of a running back staple that has a few packages designed just for him. The good news is we are seeing more teams in the NFL do that and moving away from the workhorse do it all backs.

If he leaves for the draft this year he’ll be drafted in the later rounds and I don’t know if that improves if he comes back.

His decision is going to be based more on how much he thinks his draft stock can go up if he comes back and I’m not sure it will.

Combine 40-yard dash & agility drill times will decide Ship's NFL draft future***

Last game was EXACTLY what I thought we'd get out of Ship and Mafah this year. Ship as the APB and Mafah as the Bruiser RB - selfishly, I'd love to have both stay and come back for one last ride. That said, I think we only get one.

Ship, I get that he's not disgruntled but...looking at this like a business decision - does Clemson have the proper support to use him properly if he were to come back? Or would there be another school that might be able to utilize his swiss knife army style more?

Last game certainly proved we could but I'm not sure if we'd do it on a regular basis. Of course, we could dramatically improve this offseason with coaching changes and portal use and year 2 in GRs offense could certainly see us level up.

Going to be an interesting off-season.

I hope he returns to Clemson.

I was surprised to see he ran down the hill with the seniors.

My first thought was he is going into the draft.

My second thought was, "I don't know why he would enter the portal, but if he did within the first hour his name appears on the official list he will get a phone call from Mike Norvell, Kirby Smart and Nick Saban." I cannot imagine any coach at any school would say, "Nah, not interested. Not gonna pursue him."

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

where he would get drafted is almost immaterial....

the issue Ship - and very other College RB - should be looking at is the number of hits they're taking in College for the NIL they get.

Every body has its own number of hits it can take and still maintain a level of performance of a NFL RB. Once that performance dips, quickness goes, speed is lost, shoulders give out, head trauma adds up, etc. the pro RB is done and will be cut.

It used to be that College RB's wanted to skip to getting paid as quickly as possible to maximize the ration of

Dollars Earned / # Hits.

That's because the "# Hits" is limited, just not specifically known. Earning dollars previously had to occur in the NFL. Not any more though.

So Ship has to figure where he can earn the highest Dollar/Hit ratio over time that is possible, no matter where he'd get drafted.

Given his injury problems this year, and his style of running, and the fact that he's been asked to run almost solely in the A/B gap by the Clemson Staff during his time here,

I'd say he has a body that is going to wear out quickly in the NFL.

Getting drafted low, paid low, but stuck in a backup role for several years, might actually allow him to stretch out his paid pro career most profitably. But who knows....
