Ok I understand him maybe wanting to be loyal but when UCLA offers you a job you at least gotta be interested. What the heck is VCU giving him to turn all these big schools down?

He may simply be happy where he is. Its certainly rare in the coaching ranks but if he feels he is at a school where he can achieve his goals while he and his family are happy and taken care of, then I get it.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2013/03/26/vcu-shaka-smart-contract/2022959/
On the subject of passing up jobs in bigger conferences, Smart said in November that he was happy in Richmond, and his wife, Maya, and their daughter were, too.
"You're coming to work every day to hopefully enjoy what you do. Learn, be better and be challenged," Smart said. "I have that opportunity here. There were some great opportunities that were out there, but this was really less about those opportunities and more about my desire to be here.
"The media can sometimes oversimplify these types of things and say that if someone leaves, they're all of the sudden greedy or selfish or they're in it for themselves or the money. If they stay, they're a great person or whatever. Just like me, you or anyone in a job, they're going to do what's best for them and their family. Be somewhere where their family is happy and where you're valued or appreciated. It just so happens that for me, I feel that way about VCU."

Why would he want to go to a school that fired its coach after winning the conference and 25 games??? Or a school that fired a coach who finished in the top 3 of the conference 7 out of 10 seasons? Or a school that fired a coach who made 3 consecutive final four appearances?

VCU is giving him job security.Even mediocre success in the Big Dance beats the pressure of winning it at schools like UCLA.

As a VCU grad I can tell you, it's a good gig.

No football to compete with. Great facilities. An urban campus. And they have always treated their basketball coaches well. Shaka has taken it to another level, creating an identity with "havoc". I think he wants to be the Coach K of VCU.
He may leave at some point, but only for a great offer.

Great area to recruit, basketball is the top dog at VCU. He makes close to 1.5 mil now and they are talking about redoing his contract. At VCU it is easier to make ncaa tournament and if he wins a game in tourney that is a successful season. At UCLA, it isn't good enough to just make tourney and is a lot harder.

He may see a greater gig available in the near future somewhere besides the west coast.

believe will decline...they are losing their rivalry games with Cuse and Georgetown...they are losing playing in the Garden...that's got to hurt their program long term.

comparatively speaking, there are certainly better jobs available compared to VCU but perhaps, just maybe, his decision to say is more a case of his understanding the meaning of words like dedication, loyalty, and commitment.

Also consider

that he can become the Wooden, Dean Smith, Calhoun, etc. of VCU-- he can't really be that guy at an established powerhouse. Chances are, he'd be a care-taker of one of those programs and, while the pay would be better, the leash would be shorter and the scrutiny much more intense. At VCU, a school with next to no basketball history, his loyalty will be rewarded and he has a real good chance of making VCU a consistent name nationally.

Shaka Smart is no dummy. In addition to being a good basketball coach, he is a very intelligent man. In fact, he achieved a nearly perfect score on the SAT and subsequently received offers to attend several Ivy League schools including Harvard, Yale and Brown. He chose instead to attend Kenyon College because of the relationship he developed during his recruitment with then Kenyon head coach Bill Brown.
