Serious question

Mar 10, 2022, 11:22 AM

We know Clemson is "all in" on football. We have the facilities and staff salaries to prove that. We do have some limitations. The ACC does not pay per school what other conferences do from a TV contract perspective. We also have a smaller alumni base than many schools with whom we compete. So lets say Clemson hired a new basketball coach that turned the program into a contender. We all know that would attract bigger schools offering more money. Think Rick Barnes and Texas. So, the question is would you be willing to sacrifice football success for basketball success. Or do you believe with the afore mentioned limits on income we can pay both a football staff and a basketball staff top dollar?

My personal opinion is we have to make choices and I wouldn't trade one football natty for ten basketball natties. That is just me and which sport I value more.

why would you need to sacrifice anything for basketball

Mar 10, 2022, 11:34 AM

success?

Dabo did not start off with a 10 mil contract.. and if he wanted to leave he would.

Barnes wanted to leave. Purnell wanted to leave.

Clemson has spent millions on basketball getting the facilities up to par.

So follow up question: with our current revenue, do you believe we can pay top dollar for both a basketball staff and a football staff?

yes

i firmly believe if Brownell won in a similar fashion to Dabo.. he would get his money.

You are looking at the income on the surface. Clemson may not get as much money coming in as a TExas.. BUT Clemson doesn't have nearly the amount of sports to support as Texas either.

I dont know what the net income is compared to these other schools... but i dont "think" it is as bad as people portray when they talk about tv money.

Plus.. come on.. SCar gets all that SEC money, what do they do with it?

I believe SC has to finance more sports as well. Got to be a expensive proposition seeing most = 0 revenue. I believe if both basketball and football are doing well I would think that would help out tremendously on funding these other sports.

In my opinion Clemson never has been nor will ever be a Top notch basketball school. Clemson football has taken the time to take a so-so program and build it into a powerhouse. It would make no sense what so ever to punish them for what they have accomplished over the years.
Football Stadium-80,000 plus--basketball arena-what 12,000. The math does not add up and all sports would suffer. I am not saying more money can't be put into basketball - but they (more so the coach then the players) have to pull their weight.

Clemson already sunk a ton of money into basketball. $63.5

mil the last time

I dont know where people get this notion that Clemson puts all their money into football or that they are not willing to throw dough at basketball.

Doesn't mean you don't try. You think there are other schools trying to be good at FB or BB? Why wouldn't we try?

What’s wrong with investing in a coaching staff that succeeds until they are priced out of our basketball budget? We keep giving Brownell contract upgrades so budget has been increasing. If we hire a promising younger mid-major coach who does well for us for 4 or 5 yrs (before leaving for a larger program) then we get a few years of success that can help sell the program for the next coach. I do think the AD must be willing to counter the first offer a coach gets to prevent being poached every couple years like happens at the mid-majors.

Very well said. This whole nutty notion of being against hiring a coach who may actually improve our program because someone may "poach" him is absurd. The alternative is more of the same.

Why would bb success hurt our football program?

Mar 10, 2022, 7:34 PM

Ridiculous! We have had hoops success before and will someday have it again. It just takes the right guy.
Before Dabo, we were a middlin’ football program. Alwaze “One play away” under TB. Danny gave us a good decade, but other than that decade and dominating the shamecox forever, our football success was moderate pre-Dabo.

- How does Wake Forest sell out basketball games?
- How does Clemson have a harder time filling Littlejohn than 2021 than decades ago with thousands and thousands more grads?
- How did 30 year old Billy Donovan show up at Gainesville, FL and dominate the SEC and the nation for many years incl. two consecutive natl championships?
- Duke has a smaller alum base than Clemson. How did unheralded Coach K make it happen with Bobby Knight's endorsement?
