Seems legit this time

May 19, 2012, 9:45 PM

the SEC/Big12 bowl game was a game changer. Ultimately, we know, football rules the athletic landscape. I honestly see no way the ACC survives as a major player. Who can they add other than Notre Dame that adds anything? And the Irish ain't coming. I don't like losing decades old rivalries and traditions, but honestly, see no other option for us at this point.

Many here have faced this painful truth.***

Biggest benefit to a move to Big12

May 19, 2012, 9:56 PM

no more yearly talk of 0 for forever in Chapel Hole. I'm not upset about the probable move, I just like traditions in college sports. when you leave your home of close to 60 years, their are always some things you'll miss

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL. Will you miss us? I doubt it.

We have to do what e have to do. And I want to commend

our administration. It could not have been their wish to leave the ACC. Maybe for the SEC, but certainly not the Big12. I credit them for recognizing the shifting landscape in a way that none of us could have imagined and I keep up with realignment compulsively. They were ahead of the game, formed the advisory committee to screen what they knew needed to be done. I hope we have a safe landing.

I feel sorry for Pitt and Syracuse who thought they had a safe landing, but we have to take care of our own business at this point.

What is bothersome is the bad teams that are going to

May 19, 2012, 10:06 PM

get grandfathered in like Vandy, Baylor, Iowa St, etc. Baylor's success isn't sustainable, by the way

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Luck of the draw

May 19, 2012, 10:11 PM

last year when it looked like the ACC would survive WF, Dook and the likes were the fortunate ones

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What is sickening is the teams that will be invited because

May 20, 2012, 12:12 AM

they have TV sets and TV sets alone.

sadly true. maybe once things settle out they wont be grandfathered in but that is unlikely

What is even more bothersome to me is that great schools may be left OUT.... Pitt, Syracuse, GT, Maryland, etc...

Duke, and Uconn

should be in the same conference for hoops schools who offer some semblace of football. half a'ed football

How was the bowl game a "game changer"?...

May 19, 2012, 10:25 PM

What are the chances that one or both conference's champions are NOT going to be in the "final 4" of the football playoff? What happens if both champions are? Do the second place teams in each conference go to this "bowl game"? What happens to the SEC's long-standing tradition with the Sugar Bowl? How do you know the NCAA is going to APPROVE another bowl game? Isn't this the same setup as the Rose Bowl is now? Is that setup a "game changer"? You and your "buddies" just WANT it to seem legit because you want out of the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When the plaoff system begins in 2014 bowl tie ins.

May 19, 2012, 11:38 PM

for conference champs are a thing of the past. It's an at large system again. With the PAC12/BIG10 ties to the Rose Bowl probably remaining by choice of the bowl and the BIG12/SEC contract, one of the other major bowls would vie for the highest rated BIG12/SEC teams available. If the PAC12/BIG10 or SEC/BIG12 foes are ranked 1-2 after the regular season, they could simply decline an invite to the playoffs and play each other, with the game going to the highest bidder. With those 4 conferences linking together, if you are not a part of one of them, you are simply not in the hunt. That's a game changer

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But this yet-to-be-approved "bowl game"...

May 19, 2012, 11:46 PM

supposedly only takes the conference champs if they AREN'T in the playoffs. I don't see how that's any different than what the Rose Bowl (or Sugar or Orange) does now. Why would a team decline a chance to play for a national championship? That would be the height of stupid. I think you're putting the cart before the horse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is to say it won't be in an existing bowl?

May 19, 2012, 11:55 PM

And a trophy from an ever more meaningless NCAA will not match the media hype of a true 1-2 matchup. If no 1-2 matchups exist, it's still one of the most attractive bowls. Last year the top 4 would have been Bama, LSU, Stanford and OK St. So Arkansas and K-St would have played. The Rose Bowl is still one of the most prestigious every year, this game will be as well. More importantly, it limits who an ACC champ can play

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The "true 1-2 matchup"...

May 20, 2012, 12:09 AM

will be in the playoff games (actually it'll probably be 1-4 and 2-3 with the winners playing for the title). With this system, nothing would have changed with the ACC champ last year. The Orange Bowl would STILL have been Clemson/West Virginia. Do you REALLY think a "BCS" bowl won't still take the ACC champ if it isn't in the "playoffs"? I fail to understand the hysteria over something that may not even happen. Going to the Big 12 makes no sense from a logistical standpoint.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would the ORANGE Bowl rather have had Arkansas or us?

May 20, 2012, 12:20 AM

Their will be no conference tie ins. That means Notre Dame becomes a player every year if they remain independent. Orange Bowl ratings were historically low. It's all about TV, and that will drive bowl selections again with no conference tie ins. In the 80's we sure could have been in another New Years Day bowl with some of our rankings, but we weren't. It will be like that again if we stay in what will be a mediocre league. This is going to be a mass exodus over $$$$$$$$$

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Huh?..

May 20, 2012, 12:38 AM

You say there won't be any conference tie-ins, yet the SEC and Big 12 just set up one. What's to say the ACC champ won't still have a guaranteed bowl spot? Can you prove that or are you just making an assumption that "supports" your desire to get out of the ACC?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the point. A guaranteed bowl spot against who?

May 20, 2012, 8:25 AM

The Big East? How's that worked out? Face it, SCU would have been in a BCS game ahead of us last year if not for the conference tie in. Georgia as well. K-St. Michigan St. Just who of meaning would the ACC champ play with these other 4 conferences pledging to send their top available teams to play each other? In the 80's last year's Orange Bowl would have been the Gator Bowl

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First of all the NCAA doesn't get to "approve" it....

May 20, 2012, 12:40 AM [ in reply to How was the bowl game a "game changer"?... ]

bowls exist outside the NCAA, hence no recognized national champion in football. Secondly, the way it shakes out is that these four conferences, between their conference championship games and new bowl alliance have positioned themselves to guarantee they will hold the top 4 spots for the playoff. Also with the additional revenue they are assuring noone can catch up.

Basically they could care less if an ACC team plays in the Orange bowl, unfortunately the only conference we woulg get to play would be the Big east. They have pretty much eliminated any ACC teams chance of winning a national champuionship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, the NCAA DOES have to certify all bowl games...

May 20, 2012, 12:52 AM

that's been the case for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BCS and NCAA are two completely different organizations...

May 20, 2012, 8:41 AM

And the move by Big12/SEC is a step to cutting them both out of college football picture.
