Time Warner, DirecTV, Dish Network, U-Verse

I need at least one representative for each service to tell me they like or dislike it. Bonus points if you can compare multiple services.

Let's focus on TV for now. If you have comments about associated internet packages, feel free to throw them in.

I've been a customer for five years. Overall I am fairly satisfied. It sucks when it goes out because of a storm or strong wind though.

Even though it's not an option for you

It sucks but it gets the job done...I like Uverse better but I am being held hostage due to Comcast being the only only cable carrier I can get and I can't hook up satellite. They offered me the triple play for $89.99/month and threw in HBO and Starz, which is actually a pretty decent deal (even though I don't use the phone)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't get U-Verse, at least not right now.

Apr 30, 2012, 1:05 PM

But I still wanted to hear about it from someone, for future reference.

they're the only cable operator you can get?

I can't imagine a phone line being better (based on my personal land line experiences) but why get cable if you prefer the phone service?

I would also like to represent DirecTV.

Apr 30, 2012, 1:21 PM

I've been a happy customer for 7 years now.

They have great customer service and provide the best choice of HD programs, along with services to bring you every major sporting event (NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, NHL Center Ice, etc.).

DirecTV is far superior to Dish Network in what they offer, as well as customer service and cost of the service.

I do not know about Uverse very much, but I've heard good things from them; however, they aren't as universal as DirecTV (you can move with DirecTV, and they will have an installer come and put the dish in your new place and set it up for free).

As far as losing signal with the dish, it may happen ~5 times a year, and usually only during the heaviest part of the storm (when the cloud cover is extremely thick and lot of interference). I've never had mine go out with winds, TXTF may need to have someone come take a look at his dish and anchor it down better.

Another strong benefit of DirecTV is you can suspend your account and resume it at zero charge. It maintains your account status (they value loyalty when they see you've been a customer for several years), and can easily be resumed via phone without talking to anyone. I currently have my account suspended during non-football/basketball season and use an antenna over the summer for local channels. Saves us some money when we don't need to watch ESPN or other premium channels. I would also suspend my account during the summers while at Clemson, which was convenient.

You can also get an extra dish and just bring your receiver and you can have TV anywhere. It's great for when you're at a tailgate, you can have TV. We also take our receiver (dish is installed already) to the cabin my parents have so we can get TV there.

EDIT: I didn't see you also listed Time Warner Cable for television. Avoid them like the plague, their customer service sucks, their boxes are slower than molasses, and they don't provide large capacity DVRs. When I was living in an apartment, I moved apartment buildings in order to get rid of Time Warner Cable and get DirecTV; which TWC also ###### up and sent me to collections even though I returned my box, but they said I never did. I hate TWC.

with DSL and DirecTV; however, you're stuck with DSL. I just pay for DirecTV for TV and pay my local cable provider (Time Warner) for Internet only.

I represent UVerse, formerly of DirecTV.

Apr 30, 2012, 1:26 PM

I loved DTV. I had it for about five years before making the switch. I believe DTV to have the best picture quality of all the services I've had. It's prices and channel packages are comparable to all others.

The reason I switched to UVerse was because I wanted to upgrade to a networked DVR system throughout the house. UVerse was offering this as part of its new customer package. DTV was unwilling to give me a similar service without additional charge (~$400 for equipment and installation). So, I switched.

Two drawbacks to switching from DTV to Uverse:

1. MAJOR drawback to Uverse right now for Braves fans, though. They are in a dispute with Fox Sports Network over the distribution of Peachtree TV-televised Braves games which are carried on FSN stations outside of the Atlanta. So, I don't get any Braves games that PTV carries. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the price and service.

2. Lost portability of service. So now I have to bum my borther in law's DTV receiver for tailgating. Mild hassle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Summary of my thought process so far:

Apr 30, 2012, 1:27 PM

I'm not particularly unhappy with Time Warner as far as service goes. I don't have high demands there. But my bill has just gotten outrageous.

A cursory perusal on DirecTV's website gives me everything I need for TV for $57 a month, for 24 months. It would be $95 a month after that.

I'm currently paying TW $177 a month for TV and internet. DirecTV sounds really appealing right now. It's difficult to get me to make decisions for change, though. But I'm getting there.

You could probably ditch tv altogether.

Apr 30, 2012, 2:57 PM [ in reply to Summary of my thought process so far: ]

If you can't find the tv shows you like to watch on hulu plus or netflix then there are other streaming methods you can use to watch your stories.

For sports it's a bit harder (especially football) to find things online, but I know you love baseball and you can subscribe to MLB tv or whatever their streaming service is called.

Right now I have Directv, but I'm giving serious consideration to ditching it completely. The only thing I'll miss is having it on in the background. The silence will be deafening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

U-Verse

Apr 30, 2012, 1:30 PM

Excellent. No problems with weather interference. Very user friendly. Great HD picture. You can pause/rewind live action. Great sports package.

Only two negatives. No NFL Sunday ticket although you do get the NFL network & for $5/month more the Redzone. The other is it's done by AT&T which has HORRENDOUS customer service. Huge, multi-tiered international company that will require several attempts to solve problems.

The product is excellent but the customer service is terrible.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We switched to U-Verse from Northland in the Clemson condo.

Apr 30, 2012, 2:32 PM

Much better product and a few bucks cheaper. No customer service issues yet, but I'm well aware of dealing with AT&T as a vendor, a reseller, and a customer.

That's easy DirecTV. They have MLB channel and package. ;)***

I was DirecTV for like 8 years, then switched to U-verse

Apr 30, 2012, 4:54 PM

Can't really say I like either more than the other. I didn't really dislike DirecTV, just got mad that every time I bought a new HDTV they would charge me more.

Uverse is a bit cheaper but both are fine as far as I'm concerned. DirecTV nails you for like $5 for every TV above 2 or 3 that you have, pluse another $10 for HD and more charges for DVR. Uverse gave us all dvrs and hd on all tvs for one price.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One more thing, I've never really dealt much with

Apr 30, 2012, 4:55 PM

losing service with either one. Have lived in 4 homes in 3 states over past 8 years, and no troubles to speak of.
