CarKrzyNet srs kwesshion

Sep 2, 2014, 9:58 PM

So i've been saving up to get a car. Hoping for around 30K, certified pre-owned with decent mileage. Basically I feel like I'm hitting that old guy stage where your car really needs to last, hold value, all that boring old people sh!t.

So, I know I want a bigger car than I have now.
1-Can't decide on truck or SUV
2-Narrowed it down to Ford (F-150, Explorer), Toyota (Tundra, FJ Cruiser, 4Runner) and then GM...don't know how I feel about an overpriced government car with issues out the a$$.

I've always wanted an F-150 and would want to get the V8. Last week my rental car in Sacramento was a new Explorer and that thing blew my mind...great riding car with all the amenities. I just feel it looks like a mini-van-esque SUV.

Every time I start thinking about it, I always land back on the F-150. Any thoughts or srs help when buying first car? My current car is the biggest POS honda accord, so anything will be an upgrade.

i feel the line between functional (what I need) and what I want don't necessarily align with the F-150, but ### I love those trucks and what Ford is doing as a whole the past 5 years. I wish they had a legitimate rival to the Tahoe/Yukon monopoly.

Thanks in advance.

I really like the used Highlander I picked up last December. Not great mileage but great touring machine. Good high end torque and fun to drive.

I highly recommend the F-150

Sep 3, 2014, 7:18 AM

I have a 2012 Platimum with the V-8 and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I was always a GM guy...until I finally test drove the new F-150s. I was blown away and traded in my Silverado for an F-150. I have not regretted it once. I've got about 35K miles on it now and commute about 70 miles each day. Never had an issue with it and love driving it.

I cane fit three kids with car seats in the bcak seat easily and still have room to stuff backpacks and whatever else around their feet.

The fuel economy will be very similar to the F150. For infrequent hauling, buy a small trailer or borrow one. I have an Expedition and an old F100 that I use for hauling. You cannot beat the Expedition for taking trips or tail-gating...it holds LOTS of stuff!

Either Ford or GM

Sep 3, 2014, 8:22 AM

Id say stick with a truck. Since I bought mine there have countless times that the bed has been useful. Everytime I go home I end up using it to carry mulch or brick back to my parents and theres plenty of room in the crew to fit 7 in the cab. Having never had a truck, or been in a truck family, its been quite an upgrade.

I'm pretty confused here

Sep 3, 2014, 8:49 AM

all these responses and still none worth a wet turd.

If you buy a chevy or ford, you're going to be rebuilding that bad boy by the time you hit 100k. If you're LUCKY, you may get 150k.

Toyota is the clear answer. Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, or Highlander. If you need to tow anything heavy, cut the Highlander. If you tow heavy with regularity, you may want to cut the Tacoma as well. You really can't go wrong with the Tundra. Get a used one (best bang for your buck), and make sure you have the maintenance records showing that the fluids have been changed at recommended intervals. With the age/mileage your buying power will get you, that's probably all you'll need to worry about having done. I doubt there will be any with high enough miles at that price to have hit major maintenance milestones.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhhhh....I have a Chevy Tahoe with 203k on it

Sep 3, 2014, 9:05 AM

Very little maintenance, but it is at the end of it's life cycle.

My dad has a GMC Yukon XL with 125k on it. Still going strong, in great shape. About to buy it off of him.

MauldinT, where are you???

About 6 months ago, a coworker and I had this same convo

Sep 3, 2014, 9:29 AM

I was driving a toyota car with 225k miles on it that had never had any work done on it that wasn't routine maintenance. I told him what I just told you. He bragged that his Trail Blazer had 150k on it and he hadn't had but one or two $500 repairs. About a month ago, he replaced the engine.

Three other co-workers with a Sierra, Silverado, and Tahoe have all replaced their transmissions in the past year- The Sienna also went to the scrap yard after the second engine failed- and these cars are all fairly new models. Other co-workers have 3 Tundras, 2 Tacomas, a highlander, a prius, and a corolla- all between 50k and 250k miles, and NONE have had anything other than oil changes, brakes, batteries, or tires in the past 3 years. I take that back, ONE tundra got his water pump replaced when he got his battery changed because they recommended doing it while they were in there b/c of the age/mileage.

I won't even get into the Fords... if you like constantly paying to keep your car functional- or replacing transmissions at or before 100k miles, Ford is definitely the way to go.

Buy the Toyota- you'll never go back.

Sep 3, 2014, 10:00 AM [ in reply to I'm pretty confused here ]

I'm amazed at the number of 200k plus Chevy and Ford trucks that are out there on Craigslist having just spent a couple of months helping Joonyer find his truck. The life of a vehicle used to be measured by the 100k mark, but in the last 10-15 years the new mark is 200k. If you put out vehicles that don't get to that mark with average maintence, then you're not going to be in the vehicle manufacturing business very long.

http://business.time.com/2012/03/20/what-you-only-have-100k-miles-on-your-car-thats-nothing/

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think some of the bad rap that Chevy and Ford get

Sep 3, 2014, 10:02 AM

is because a number of the people who buy them don't do routine maintenance. They wait for something to break. Well, maybe that something breaking put too much stress on other parts and what not.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the mileage standard is true

Sep 3, 2014, 10:22 AM [ in reply to Gonna disagree with you. ]

my current cars have 175k and 226k miles on them. Neither one have ever had ONE SINGLE REPAIR. Only maintenance (tires, brakes, batteries, oil, filters, fluids).

The amount of chevy's and fords that get to that point on a single engine and a single transmission vs. toyotas- I think that stat favors toyota HEAVILY. It doesn't impress me to have a high odometer reading when you've basically rebuilt the entire truck as things break along the way. My family has owned six toyotas in my adult life. Knock on wood- I still haven't ever had a major repair ON ANY OF THEM, and all have hit the 200k mark or are well on their way there with no issues. I feel bad when I sell them b/c there's nothing wrong with them, I just get bored having the same car after a decade. In my teens/early 20's, I tried a Mustang, Dodge Intrepid, F-150, Ram, and Explorer. All had major breakdowns within 2 years of purchase except the F150 which was wreck within 3 months of purchase. A couple have broken down within 6 months of purchase- none made it past 80k miles.

I'm just speaking from MY experience- but you have to admit the stats I just quoted from vehicles I've driven are pretty telling.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now, I will agree with you.

Sep 3, 2014, 10:37 AM

2000 Tundra with 118,000 miles.

The Mrs had an 82 Toyota truck when I met her with the old R22, 5 speed, no air, no radio, manual windows and locks that went 220k, passed to her Dad, and then sold to a local handyman and finally died with 410k on it.

I firmly believe in Toyota reliability.

Explorer and the F-150's have grown on me. If you get a truck, the new Rams are the best driving hands down. Can't go wrong with a Tundra, either, although I personally don't like the looks and they don't real good gas mileage.

I wouldn't own a GM vehicle if it was given to me, biggest POS on the road. Even the trucks start having issues only after a couple of years. However, if you're going for frat boy status/daddy's money look, Z71 is the way to go.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the Dodge drives just a tad bit better than the Ford

Sep 3, 2014, 1:02 PM

It's a wider feeling, too. If I ever got the Ford, I'd have to have the V8, though. Not sold on the ecoboost. I'm eagerly awaiting to see how tow capacity and ride is affected by the new aluminum body on the F-150, too. I know the Ram's achieved the ride they have by going with coils and a four link in the rear as opposed to a leaf setup.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think the Dodge drives just a tad bit better than the Ford

Sep 3, 2014, 2:32 PM

Not sure I want coils and 4link on a truck I'd work hard. Just me though. Didn't know that. I'd like to drive one.

The aluminum is supposed to drop about 7000lbs on the f150. I'd have to have the 5.0 too. I think it's even a bit on the weak side when towing. Could just be the shift points, but it feels weak. Probably why the gas mileage is so good.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
