Rod Hall

Nov 17, 2013, 10:47 PM

McDaniels is the spotlight and deserves every second of it, straight leader and game changer for the team.

Hall needs some love too though, 1 TO in 3 games and it was on a questionable traveling call.

I've have a good time watching him mature over his career here. Solid defender, especially man to man, facilitates the offense well and was real smart with the ball. However, that's all he could do, so people started playing off him.

I've never seen him drive to the basket as much as he does now. I personally love it, it's not going to be points a good portion of the time, but it causes defenses to crash in and causes fouls, it gives another dynamic to the Clemson O. He's the pilot of this offense and that is arguably as important as McD.

So cheers to McDaniels for his MVP performance, but I give a nod to Hall for his improvement.

With the way games will be called this year the dribble

drive will be crucial, and Hall and to a cartain extent Roper and Filer are by far the best we have at it. Hall is strong and can get to the hoop. He's struggled finishing at times but this year those bumps he takes will be called, and he'll get to the line. He's obviously worked hard on his FT shooting, 14-15 this year. His penetration also opens up the kick for a 3. Have always loved how he defends and takes care of the ball. He hit a 15 footer today as well, and according to Brownell, has really improved that shot. He will be a key this year. Hall, Filer and Roper are all playing very well right now.

I am not entirely sure better competition will bail him out on drives to the basket the way SCAr did last night. It is almost like Frank Martin did not anticipate how the new hand check rule would change the game and they are loading up on fouls.

Unless the officials drastically change how they are

calling games(and in the ACC anything is possible, lol) we are going see a lot more FT's this year. Every game I've watched this year has seen the guy taking it to the hole get the call and go to the line. Coaches and players will adjust, probably with a lot more zone and sagging man-to-man defense, but if the calls remain consistent, that guy who gets in the lane will be shooting FT's. If you listened to Brownell's post game presser, and I think he speaks for most coaches, they are really struggling with the changes. They are a 180, and that's tough to adjust to. Is going to be interesting to watch how things play out and as to whether some big name coaches begin to speak out and apply some pressure to loosen up

Wasn't that also the name of an underutilized tight end?

Ben Hall. Another highly rated Byrnes high player.

Was thinking thee same thing....

what I like about Hall is that he has been our starting guard since his freshman year, and while I may be worried about our inside presence this year, I certainly have no worries about ball security at the point guard position. With him and Roper doing most of the ball handling around the point I think we may be in for a good season

I have always really liked Rod Hall

Nov 18, 2013, 12:35 AM

He's a guy who wasn't a high recruit - 2 star I believe - who came in and worked hard from day one. He has always played great defense, and makes smart decisions. He rarely tries to force things, and is a pass first kind of guy. I love his toughness when taking the ball to the basket. His midrange game is better than most people give it credit for being (and better than Rod himself has realized at times). I'm glad to see him taking his shots when they are there. It will bring a nice option for us on the offensive end.

Hall has really improved his touch on his shot. It's most noticeable at the Free Throw line, but he also sunk a sweet 17 footer in the first half.

With his ability to drive, draw fouls, and finish through contact - he's going to be a real asset when the offense is struggling to create open shots late in the shot clock.

Nov 19, 2013, 3:37 PM

as i've heard said about other players, he's the 'straw that stirs the drink'

he's a pleasure to watch - plays tough and with poise.

good things happen for the Tigers when he drives to the basket.

no doubt FT shooting is going to be more important this year under the new rule(s) and so far that really looks like a strength - for Hall and for the team

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you say a lot of nice things, and they are accurate

Nov 19, 2013, 4:03 PM

but he's just not a scorer or finisher around the basket, or threat as a shooter, so he's limited.

THe name of the game in basketball has always remained one thing: to put the basketball in the ring.

Shooter, probably not, but he can definitely finish around the rim, have you watched him play?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He may not be a major three point threat, but mid-range

Nov 20, 2013, 7:43 AM [ in reply to you say a lot of nice things, and they are accurate ]

he is very accurate. And his finishing around the basket is becoming very good too. When he doesn't finish, he often uses his body to draw fouls.
