brother a couple extra years. But, cancer still took him in December 2018. I hope to live long enough to see a viable cure for most forms of that scourge emerge.

I hate hearing this…

Great singer and even better human being.

I was hoping he was still on the mend. ####….

Good to know his pain is gone in Heaven. Hopefully he has the best seat in the house to watch his Oklahoma team play every Saturday in the fall….

Not to get biblical but according to the Bible when we pass away we are “sleeping” until Jesus returns, so sadly all dead are in the ground dead right now until Jesus returns. We do not go straight to heaven when we pass away.

2 cor 5:8. Your body is still in the ground but your soul is with Jesus.

These verses directly tell what happens to a believer in Jesus Christ...

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.
- Luke 23:39-43

The soul is immediately taken to heaven and is completely conscious.

At the Second Advent, the soul those who have died will receive the resurrected body.

1 Corinthians 15:35-53:
But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being” f ; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we g bear the image of the heavenly man.

I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

"When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Saviour. He is well-taught who learns these two lessons." -John Newton

Wrong. Heaven is on earth and will be heaven. We will all be in the ground until Christ returns.

Do Christians go to heaven when they die?

No, the Bible likens death to sleep (an unconscious state) for all people. That means that even Christians do not go anywhere upon death. Scripture does, however, reveal that God’s people will be resurrected at the return of Jesus Christ and will reign with Him on the earth.

Do We Go to Heaven When We Die?

Do we go to heaven immediately when we die? What does the Bible say?

How is death like sleep?
Will I go to heaven when I die?
Where do we go when we die?
Bible verses on the future resurrection of the dead.
Hope and comfort from the truth about life after death.
What happens when we die? Nearly all Christian denominations teach a “heaven or ####” afterlife. Essentially, they believe that every human being has an immortal soul that will go straight to heaven or #### after the physical body dies.

There are many ideas about what heaven and #### are like, and about who will go to heaven and who will go to ####. But do the popular ideas about heaven and #### come from the Bible?

The Bible teaches very clearly that all human beings die: “And as it is appointed for men to die once …” (Hebrews 9:27). Since death awaits us all, what happens after death is one of the most important questions we can ask—and answer!

What does the Bible say about death?
The short answer to this question is that the Bible says we literally die after death. We don’t go to heaven or ####, or maintain any conscious state. Dead people “sleep” in unconsciousness—they don’t think or feel anything.

But the good news is that the sleep of death is not permanent. The Bible teaches there will be a resurrection—a restoration of life at a future time.

Let’s now explore this answer in greater depth from the pages of the Bible.

Bible verses that describe death as sleep
When the Bible describes death, it often likens it to sleep.

“Why did I not die at birth? Why did I not perish when I came from the womb? … For now I would have lain still and been quiet, I would have been asleep; then I would have been at rest” (Job 3:11, 13, emphasis added throughout).

“So man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep” (Job 14:12).

“For in death there is no remembrance of You; in the grave who will give You thanks?” (Psalm 6:5).

“Consider and hear me, O LORD my God; enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death” (Psalm 13:3).

“His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish” (Psalm 146:4).

“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2).

“These things He said, and after that He said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.’ … However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep” (John 11:11, 13).

“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption” (Acts 13:36).

“For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep” (1 Corinthians 11:30).

“Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. … But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:18, 20).

“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:51).

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep [those who had died], lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).

This is definitely a sad and horrible disease. My mom died of stomach cancer too! It is extremely painful and typically doesn’t get diagnosed until the later stages. Having surgery to remove it helps but even then, it’s just a matter of time before the cancer is back with a vengeance.

Rest in peace Toby- your suffering is over.

My grandfather died at 54 of stomach cancer. My dad had colon cancer and later stomach cancer . My mom died of breast cancer at 64. I am a 19 year survivor of breast cancer at the age of 66 now. 48 when I had it. Early detection saves lives. My doctors at Duke check my stomach and my colon every 3 years due to the history. I have only had 1 polyp in my life. This time I had 5 in my colon and 1 in my stomach. I will be back in there in 3 years. Take care of your body. You know it best.
