Rileys offense

3

Oct 1, 2023, 12:14 AM

Is anyone else surprised and disappointed with the lack of creativity in Riley’s offense?
They just line up and snap the ball. There’s no motion, no creativity, rarely is anybody running free down field.
This offense looks nothing like what I anticipated a Riley office would look like here at Clemson.

Watch TCU last year, very similar. Our guys are learning and improving. Big 12 don't play defense so allowed easier scoring. Take away our untimely turnovers and we are 4-1 or 5-0 and all the Nancy's are happier!

This is a very truthful statement

I’m still shocked they actually beat Michigan in playoffs

The only grip I have is Shipley up the middle on 2nd and long. But that may be a read from Cade that he just has to get better at. It is hugely predictable. Would be interested to see how many drives led of with a Shipley handoff in the middle, or a handoff at 2nd and long. My wife was calling the plays.

Ship up the middle needs to be decreased by factor of 5-10. Let him bounce, give hive option pitch or only let him run the middle when both backs are on the field.

At the same time stop running Mafah wide. He’s the big body. Pound him in the middle.

If we want better redzone performance, Riley is t the guy. He is a n upgraded over the past several years without a doubt, but not when the field gets short.

If our oline could actually move someone the redzone offense would be better. We do not threatened the defense and they have 7 or 8 stacked at the line and play coverage. We have to blow them off the ball to bring more defenders to line. Then recoevers become an issue. This oline has not lived to its hype. Thomas Austin is not getting them developed. Need an older wiser oline coach and this thing will take off.

Except this time last year Clemson was tied for 2nd in red zone production and ended up 6th in the country for the year….and currently Clemson is 130th

I agree. Not disappointed, but not what I expected.

Oct 1, 2023, 8:15 AM

You have to take the good with the bad. But:
I expected creativity.
Some wild spreads.
Some trick plays.
A stronger running game - perhaps with a full back and heavy tight ends.
We have lost our power game.

That said, it appears that the offense is improving in the passing game.

But, I did expect different. (Maybe my expectations were unfounded.)

Your oline has to be able to run block to have a good running game. Not sure it is entirely their fault. The read system does not seem to call for firing off the ball and finding guy then pushing him as far as you can.

Here is the rub.
Scheme determines a lot. Could we run the ball with a full back and 2 tight ends that are bruisers? Probably.
There are few teams that can both pass protect and run the ball well.
I am in the minority in my opinion of the o line. I think they are pretty decent. Could they be better? Of course. But people post like we have the worst o line in the country. Scheme matters. We are now pretty balanced.
Passing for 1400 and running for 950.
We are almost perfectly balanced at 50%.
Without running the plays for a yard up the middle - the passes to the outside are probably not available.
Balance is important.

I’ll add additional thoughts to my original post.
Our offensive line struggles to create holes for the running game, and they struggle with protecting Cade. This has been the situation for many years. It seems like the best way to deal with a week struggling offensive line is to create motion pre-snap to confuse the defense, which hopefully would open up some holes and give wide receivers more space.
I want to clarify, I was very impressed with the office yesterday, and I think Cade he’s doing a marvelous job development wise. My single frustration is the fact that there’s no movement pre-snap, which I think would benefit our Offense.

The creativity is post snap. When we have the 2 back set they sometimes cross behind the LOS, sometimes flare out wide, etc. Almost looks like sometimes we even confuse ourselves, but all that happens after the snap.

I'd like to see more/any pre snap motion just bc it helps tip the coverage. That Duke TD last night was a perfect example. They flipped the WR set then motioned one guy across the formation. The slot DB got lost and the WR was WIDE open in the end zone. It can make the coverage read and blitz pickup so much easier.

Riley had to learn the "Clemson offense" when he was hired

1

and I don't know how much play-calling he's actually doing.

We'll get our answer on that at the end of the season. If he's being handcuffed by Dabo, he won't stay.
