At what age do you plan to retire, or have you already retired? At 56 I do not see retirement in my future.

Give it 5 to 10 more years. But start planning now. You are the only one that will know. I’m self employed and just got tired of dealing with the public. I tell folks I retired from having employees. My brother helps me now and we work when we want to. Biggest decision is where we gonna eat lunch. Need to have something in mind to do when you do retire. Only so much yard work you can do.

Once I got my 30 years of service in, they cut my salary 15% for the privilege of continuing to work there so I retired and now I have 3 part time gigs that let me work on my own schedule as long as I meet very clear project deadlines and be off when I need to take care of elderly parents or want to do something fun on a weekday. My pension is enough to live on but I’ll keep my “hobby jobs “ as long as I can.

My boss at one job is 84 and he runs rings around us young folks.

I retired last summer at age 56. My wife will continue working for another 5-8 yrs. I now have taken over more of the household chores and find more enjoyment from doing volunteer work. It takes some things off the wife’s plate so she appreciates that. Eventually I got tired of the corporate work environment/culture (automotive design engineering). Probably the pressure of managing other folks and constant deadline demands to be achieved with less people and budget was the biggest reason.

It depends on what you mean by retirement. I know too many people who retired cold turkey with nothing to do: no real hobbies and no part time job or volunteer work. They died. I believe our minds and bodies are designed to be active- forever. I worked 40 years for the same company and enjoyed 90% of my days there. 3 months after I retired I went into business with my daughter.
So, my only message would be to make sure you have something planned to do after you leave your regular job.

Fun question to consider - I'm a relative youngster [27] so retirement seems like a more foreign concept, at least traditionally.

Some days I could work forever; others I'd choose to be done tomorrow.

I'm a business owner [Year 8] and some sprints at work make me feel as if I'm aging in dog years.

No wife, no kids. Just my pup.

It'll be interesting to see how the next few years play out. Good luck to everyone in your own paths!

It's a long way off for you but it'll be on you quickly. Begin NOW saving all you can toward that day while you're in the "earn, spend and save" state. Let compounding interest help your savings save for you. Social Security is no where near enough, and may not even be solvent by your retirement age. There'll come a time when your health will not allow you to earn or save, and from that date forward, you'll be in a "spend only" state. Six Saturdays and a Sunday is wonderful if you save like crazy toward it, have a plan for living when you get to it, and the Lord blesses you with good health while living it. If any of those three go lacking, the years aren't so golden.

Once you hit a certain age as an "old man," you can flirt with any lady of any age and you're just that "cute old man." Jump the gun on that too soon and you're the "creepy old man." Jump it way too soon and you get maced or pepper sprayed.

Life circumstances have unfortunately required all of my savings at a time much sooner than I ever anticipated. Working on building it back up, but with me being 54 as well, it'll take a lot longer than 10 years, unfortunately, unless something really crazy good happens somewhere, somehow.

I’m 54 and wife is 5 years younger. My stretch goal is to retire at 62, but not start using savings and SS until 67. This assumes my wife continues working those 5 years until she turns 62. If things don’t go as smoothly as anticipated then I’ll push it to 65.

I work for a European company, so benefits and culture are really good. They also allow folks getting close to retirement to cut back to 3 days/week (at 60% of pay) for a year or so to help with the transition into retirement and I hope to be able to take advantage of that.

As others have said…I may also continue to do some part-time or contract work after retirement for a bit. There’s high demand for that in my field, which also allows for a bit of paid travel, so the wife and I might enjoy some travel on someone else’s dime.

Good luck to all…and agree with those who say it’s important to stay active…have seen this with my own dad.

When I turned 57, I left the corporate world and was able to get a job at Clemson working with the students at the 55 Exchange Ice Cream program. I called that semi-retirement. Significantly lower stress, hours, and pay. I did that for 3 years and it made me realize I could actually retire comfortably once I figured out a different approach to health insurance. On January 1 of this year, 2 weeks before my 60th birthday, I retired. A few people asked me what I was going to do with myself because I had been a 60+ hour guy most of my working career. I don’t have any problem staying busy. Projects around the house, spending time with the grandkids, going to the gym 2-3 times a week have become part of the regular routine. In the spring we started hiking, usually one day a week from February through April. There are beautiful waterfalls all over this area. In April, I found a group of old guys that play golf Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I’m not that big of a golfer, but I’ve been playing with them once a week or so. Walking 18 holes unless it’s too hot, then I ride. We have more time to visit my family on Johns Island. I like to cook and my wife hates to cook, so I’ve been cooking supper 2-3 days a week. I bought a kayak recently. Haven’t taken it out yet, but that’s coming up soon. I think I’m gonna like Lake Jocassee. Next week we are leaving for Alaska for almost 3 weeks. We are taking a train through the interior and then spending about a week with my cousin who lives up there. In the fall I will be able to go hunting during the week so it won’t conflict with Tiger football.

The way I look at it, I worked 60+ hours for over 35 years for this and I’m enjoying it. Like someone else who posted, my Dad had health issues and died just before he turned 64. All he ever wanted to do when he retired was fish and his health was bad enough he couldn’t even do that without a lot of help. Once I saw that, I made my mind up I was going to retire as soon as I could comfortably do it and enjoy the time I have left. So here I am and right now I couldn’t be happier about it.

I’m 59 and haven’t worked in 5 years. My husband still works a stressful job and I hope he can retire at 62 but we have to think about healthcare costs. I would like to go back to work so I could possibly get the benefits to cover us both. The main thing I wanted to point out is how important it is to keep your mind active when you stop working. I was in better health when I WAS working. More organized, more alert and I just felt better. It’s so important to stay active. You can really go downhill if you don’t.

I’m 61, pushing 62. Barring unforeseen circumstances, my first retirement marker is 67.5. At that point I will gauge it month by month. Everyone’s situation is different. As for me, I need the income, as well as the added social security bump of 8% per year past 67.
I do see a legitimate chance of my company rolling out part-time work in the next couple of years (even for office people). That would be an attractive option for a few years after 67.

I'll be 66 in July and still work full time. I plan to work until what Social Security calls "Full Retirement Age" which for me is 66 and 6 months. If you draw your SS before then you'll be limited to earnings of approx. $20.5K a year. If you go over that threshold they take away $1 for every $2 you go over. So I'm hoping to cut back to part-time sometime in early 2024. I want to play more golf in retirement.

Keep in mind "QTR" Quality Time Remaining. One of my golf buddies had a massive stroke two weeks ago at age 59 and his family had to pull the plug. That was a real wake up call.

Was fortunate to retire in 2007 at 60. Took lumpsum 401k and pension then exited the stock market before the 2008 debacle. Would've had to work several more years otherwise. Started SOC SEC as soon as the 62nd birthday hit. Late wife who was 5 years younger retired from the school system in 2015. Getting added quickly to her state health insurance saved quite a bit of change. Would have worked part time but didn't see anything attractive locally and didn't want to commute to Charlotte for such work since I did that for more than 20 years. Volunteered at the local vets museum for a few years. The last ten years have served as treasurer of the library support group in addition to volunteering in the library until Covid eliminated that activity. Those things, playing some golf and tending to the house and a 3/4 of an acre yard keeps me busy enough.

Life has become much more expensive than I thought, especially having kids in college, but also life goals have changed.

56 debt free for now. Kids are all grown and doing well. Still not sure when or if I’ll be able to retire, but looks better than it did a couple of months ago.

I'll be 68 in October. Decided to retire at the end of this month. Figured I'd find something part time.

When I informed my employer, they came back with a counter offer to work 20 hours per week. I guess I'll work a few hours a day on Tues, Wed and Thurs. Very limited responsibilities. Mostly dealing with money. The best part is that I don't have to supervise people any more.

Not sure how long I'll do it, though.

Said I was retiring pre pandemic. Never happened but did hire my successor

And I am still working. Maybe will retire next year. I don't mind working.

My wife retired a couple of years ago and it was a wise decision because of all the bs that was going on where she worked.

I have been blessed

ago but am still working at almost 75. First day back in schools today after Summer break and starting 50th year. Joked a few years back when asked when I will really retire by saying " Probably when they wheel me out the school door on a stretcher" - maybe closer to reality now than a joke. Can't really see a good reason to stop a paying job to get more time to do all the jobs around the house.

I'm on pace for 55 but that all depends on what else that dumb geriatric #### in Washington decides to screw up.

Retired at 46 but went back to work part time at 51. 53 now. Figure I’ll be permanently done at 60 latest as that is when my youngest should be graduating college.

I took my 4th (and final) retirement on 12/31/22:
1) took my first retirement after serving 21 years of active duty in the Navy;
2) took my second retirement after 12 years of service and purchase of eligible buy-in from the state retirement system;
3) took my Sociable Insecurity retirement at age 66; and,
4) took my final, private firm retirement at the end of last year.
I have been blessed in so many ways - raised in a great home in a small town by great Christian parents, survived stage 4 cancer (unrelated) twice, never had a job that I did not love, even at the time (although some particular occasions were an exception), blessed with the same wife after she chased me down 53 years ago, two wonderful kids, and BORN a Tiger!! Brother, it just don't get no better - and I owe it all to a loving, Gracious God!!! R/TLM

Retired last year at 56 after 33 years in education. Have a part time job working about 20 hours or so a week to make spending money and stay busy. Loving life and very happy that I retired when I did.

I retired 2.5 years ago at age 62. I worked as VP of Supply Chain and Sourcing for private equity groups. I enjoyed the coaching, teaching, mentoring new engineers, managers, etc. sadly, very few coming into the workforce now have work ethic , sense of team, willingness to do what it takes to succeed. The interview questions from prospective employees centered around how few hours they could work, how quickly they would be promoted, how much vacation they could get. Not much about achievement and learning. Thus, it was time for me to get out.
I still mentor and support many who worked for/with me - that is still fun. All this “woke “ crap - I got out when the big stuff started. Glad I did.
Now, I fish, golf, and do charity work. Not to mention, spend time with my 4 dogs.

I retired last month after teaching for 45 years. My husband and I moved to Clemson to retire. He will work another year or 2. He works from home so he can live anywhere. We have tickets for a lot of sports and look forward to great times here!
