Referees

Oct 16, 2021, 12:46 PM

Does anyone know someone who is a ref at any level where you’d actually get paid for it?

I struggle to figure out what would possibly be enjoyable about the role that would lead someone to do it long enough to become a pro. High stress, zero thanks or recognition when you do the job well, and half the stadium hating you at any given moment. I don’t know what holes in your personal life this profession would fill.

Yep

Still doing it. Matter of fact if memory serves me right Obed went to JL Mann and that’s where I was Friday.

Not an ego thing, just something I really enjoy. I’m in my 16th season, the politics are BS but whatever.

Niiiice. Go Pats.

So what's the part you like? I'm serious, I get that it must have some appeal or you wouldn't be doing it, but I can't figure out what it is and I'm truly curious. Clearly refs are wired differently.

Basketball would be the worst and I've done

that a few times. Just the speed of the game and so much happening above the rim while most refs seem like short guys.

Somebody that likes being hated?

my uncle was a high-level HS ref

Oct 16, 2021, 1:50 PM

in Louisiana, the highest level of HS football there (AAAAA I think). One of the top dawgs in LA HS ranks. He reffed the John Curtises, Catholics, Newmans, etc. Did state playoffs in Superdome every year. He also "carried the chains" at LSU games. Knew and hung out with all the SEC refs (I know this because I went to a few LSU games with him and met/tailgated with his ref buddies a few times). Never moved up to college because he didn't want all the travel.

But he was an accountant by day.

He loved that stuff. It's an ego thing. You know people (bosses, cops, etc) who relish the power/ego thing and don't give a dang whether people like them or not. Same type thing.

I enjoyed giving back to the game

We got paid $35 as AR (line) and $50? for Referee (center)

I always did lines cus I didn’t want the responsibility of being in charge

I did high school because the parents are awful, but especially in youth soccer.

I enjoyed being able to get paid and be around soccer. Too many refs had never been players and didn’t “get” the nuances of that makes sense.

I had no desire to move up levels, just get paid to run around and wave a flag from time to time

Got a signed copy of Jerry Markbreit's "Born to Referee"...

He was one of the NFL's top guys 'back in the day'... Did some Super Bowls. Daughter was a little hottie... ;~)

I have a friend that does it.

Oct 18, 2021, 6:08 AM

He's a lawyer by trade.

Started doing high school games and lower (pee wee, middle school, etc), for a year or two. Now he's doing smaller college ball games. Hopes to be doing SEC/ACC type games in the next year or two, and ultiimately NFL games.

He's mid-30's. Soon to be married, no kids. Really likes football. Not sure what "holes" he has in his life. Seems to really enjoy it.

I was paid to be an intramural referee in college

Oct 18, 2021, 9:36 AM

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I reffed 7 on 7 flag, 4 on 4 flag, and umpired softball.

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

I did too. Remember making $2.32 per game.
