Realignment of Atlantic and Coastal Divisions

Sep 14, 2012, 9:51 PM

What if the ACC offered to qualify Notre Dame for a chance at playing in the ACC football championship game?

What if the ACC added Navy for football only and put Navy and Notre Dame in a 7 team ACC Division? Each team would play the others in the Division. Navy and Notre Dame would play each other and 5 other current ACC schools in divisional play.

The team with the best divisional record would play in the ACC Championship game vs the champion of the other division (which would have 9 teams).

To keep things "fresh" and fair, the current 14 members of the ACC would rotate through the 7 team division and 9 team division; however, Notre Dame and Navy would not rotate.

There would be cross divisional games for everyone except Notre Dame and Navy. Teams in the 9 team division would play 9 conference games. Teams in the 7 team division would play 8 conference games.

No matter how many ways you try to sell this, everyone stops

Reading when you mention uneven divisions. Who would want that mess? Please stop posting it...it is a bad idea.

Here is what is wrong with the current ACC system

Sep 15, 2012, 6:42 AM [ in reply to No matter how many ways you try to sell this, everyone stops ]

We play Pitt, BC, and WF every year.

We play 9 conference games EVERY YEAR (there will be less UGA, Auburn, Bama, etc for Clemson in the future)

The schedules are not even. We compete against Pitt and WF for a spot in the ACC-CG. We play GT every year. WF plays Duke every year. Pitt plays Syracuse every year. Their road to the ACC-CG is easier EVERY YEAR. (It is only more grossly uneven in years that we play both GT and VT)

ACC football is considered the 5th best conference in America. Our neighbors in Columbia play in the best conference in America. They receive considerable MORE MONEY from the SEC than we do the ACC (This money gives them an advantage).

We now play Notre Dame more often than we play UNC and UVA. When we play Notre Dame, it does not count in the ACC standings.

Do you have any solutions to these problems?

What if the divisions were

Atlantic and cross division Coastal

Clemson- GT
Notre Dame - VT
NCState - UNC
FSU - Miami
BC - Virginia
Navy - Maryland
Wake - Duke
Pitt - Syracuse

Still 9 game conference schedule. You play your division , your cross rival, and 1 other other division opponent. Notre Dame then can play USC and Stanford out of conference and then either Michigan St or Michigan. I think that helps the Irish keep most of their traditional rivals AND maintain the strong schedule strength they pride themselves on.

Your solution is workable, but here is the problem. Like the former members of the now depleted Big East you are thinking like second class citizens. You concede that Notre Dame should get to keep their NBC contract, take one of your potential bowl spots somewhat at your expense, play less conference games so they can keep the money from their marquee match-ups, garner recruiting advantages from their association with you, but give up none in return, and they already have you worrying about how to come up with a schedule that is workable for them. It all down hill from here! Think of what is best for Clemson and work to that end. To the infernal regions with those who want you working for less the for them!
