Realignment

Aug 8, 2023, 6:52 PM

Was told ESPN has gone all in to block Clemson and FSU from the SEC… the SEC wants us but ESPN won’t give the extra shares, the SEC has been playing chess and waiting on us which is why they held the 9 conference games offer until they could bring us on board, using that as the chip they thought ESPN would bend to and give them leverage…. We are BIG bound or stuck in the ACC thanks to ESPN as of right now…. Could change but doubt it, it’s in ESPNs hands now.

They are like the ACC brass; scrambling to try and hold the ACC together by any means. ESPN just cares about keeping eyeballs on ACC games. It isn't as much about who they bring in as it is who they see leave. They need FSU, Clemson and Miami to stay and will do anything to block us from going elsewhere.

We should make it almost impossible for them to televise the games. Limit the number of cameras to one. No drones. Stick them in the end zone with only one camera. Don't allow them to set up until 30 mins. before K.O/ No interviews with coaches or players. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

the late night time slots to Fox.

All they would have left is Mountain West games after 9 pm.

I assume because they have contracts with both conferences and if the crown jewels leave the ACC, that makes their ACC contract less profitable and won't add that much to the SEC contract.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

bingo... the 9th conference game would add revenue... but

No, Fox has more annual revenues than ESPN but not more than Disney. FOX annual revenues are around 15B; Disney is almost 90B.

Disney has more money but they are itching to dump ESPN . How much money would ESPN have then ? Long term Fox and the BIG is the best bet for stability and money

Revenues are not profits and market cap is not cash on hand - although all of those are down. They have lost billions on recent woke box office bombs destroying high value franchises like Marvel, Lucas Films, and Star Wars in the process. Their streaming business Disney+ is a money loser, the park business is down and they've milked cash cows like ABC and ESPN dry. The purchase of Fox Studios has not been good either as it got them into a deal where, in January, they are obligated to buyout Comcast's share of Hulu for about $20B+. They don't have that kind of money, in fact, one analyst I follow says they only have about $200M cash on hand. Hence, the talk of selling off pieces of the empire like ESPN and/or other assets to raise cash - quickly.

It seems to be a questionable time to get tied into another long-term media contract with ESPN/Disney, such as that of the SEC, whose new contract, though paying well now, runs until 2035 with no options to renegotiate - sound familiar? Meanwhile the BIG contract already pays more and will be renegotiated again in 2031, at which time they may crush the SEC in media contract value.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so what is SEC gonna do? let the B1G take them over???

2

Aug 8, 2023, 7:20 PM

who else is even remotely better for the SEC than CU and FSU? Central Florida? Obviously can't be an ACC team.

I posted earlier - ESPN may be worse off than the ACC as far as leadership - Actually the SEC should be more concerned with Disney being able to fulfill contract obligations.

Mickey Mouse killers = SEC Killers. Woke to Broke.

Re: so what is SEC gonna do? let the B1G take them over???

SEC doesn't have to do anything. Forces of nature are working for them. The costs for FSU, Miami and Clemson to leave are ridiculous, the ESPN contract looks like it can't be broken, and ESPN controls whether or not any of these teams can go to the SEC, which they won't do because they need the ACC contract to produce and it can't do that if the best teams leave.

As far as B1G goes, there really aren't any other great teams to grab so they don't look to get any stronger until something significant changes. Our university leaders and ACC brass totally screwed us and took away our options by signing that long-term contract and then extending it with ESPN.

We’ll see, but I think a lot of this is the ESPN talking heads trying to put out how “air-tight” the GOR is. You know the simps I speak of, Hale, Thamel, etc. Just depends what view you want to believe. FSU BOR says that the GOR wouldn’t be what stopped them from leaving. There’s still the possibility of 8 teams dissolving the conference. The one thing I would remember though, is anything that a lawyer can weave, another lawyer can undo.

Going to be an interesting year. ESPN might have to swallow their pride and hide their disdain for Clemson and FSU this year during football. The media(primarily ESPN) is going to treat Clemson and FSU alot differently than they have in the past.

This just needs to hurry up & go where it’s headed, 64 teams, one huge league w/ 4 divisions & 8 team playoff. Then like the NFL have multiple contracts with FOX, CBS, ESPN, & probably Apple & Amazon for the lower tier games eventually down the road.
