With Portal and NIL are teams developing talent anymore?

Just saw the news on Riley Leonard to ND. Is their plan to just buy a QB each year? It seems like a lot of teams with the exception of a few like Clemson are going nearly 100% to the portal each year. Personally I don't know if that is the road to success and I think Colorado and others like ND are examples of throwing money at a problem doesn't fix the problem. FSU went heavy to the portal and it paid off. I think Clemson was rightly criticized for not using the portal more to fill gaps in the depth chart. However, it seems like more and more recruiting young talent and developing them is being traded for instant impact. Just curious what everyone else sees? I don't think the portal can be used as a long term solution for coaching failures, and at some point I would think ND would need to develop an in house QB.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I agree. It also makes me think, the portal is frustrating enough for us as Clemson fans with the players we lose that have so far mainly impacted our depth at certain positions with a few starters impacted. As frustrating as that is, imagine being a team like Duke or Wake where it's already hard enough to win, and your entire hope of putting together great seasons depends on finding diamond in the rough type of players as well as player development, and now other teams will jump on taking away those players as soon as they realize you have a diamond in the rough or you've done a great job of developing a player.

Duke and Wake are simply getting poached by ND with Hartman and now Leonard

Dave Clawson addresses this very issue several weeks ago in a press conference on how Wake developed Hartman and that ND simply "bought" and "rented" him for a year. Same thing is happening now with Leonard.

Simply put "the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must" is just one of the outcomes of NIL+easy tranfer Portal...

PS... If I were a betting man, I'd bet ND, through a "surrogate", reached out to Leonard before he was in the Portal to discuss him becoming the next college millionaire. In fact, I wouldn't doubt it if Sam Hartman didn't talk to his buddy Riley about leaving Duke in the dust before the season was over...

Eventually this is going to bite ND and others who require starting caliber QB's

from the portal. Inevitably these Portal reliant programs are gonna "miss" on a portal guy and then what?? Look at their bench of backup 2/3 Star QB's to bail them out because no 4/5 Star QB out of High School is going to commit to a program that has established a pattern of getting their starting QB from the portal.

Me thinks these heavy portal coaches are setting up an unsustainable culture of Portal junkies. Programs that are becoming heavily reliant on the Portal for their starters are building a culture where no one on their roster has any real program loyalty. Why would any young player on the roster have the loyalty to stay in a program where their development is secondary to the portal? I think this kind of Portal culture is a formula for mediocrity and will eventually hurt a Program's actual HS recruiting.

Extremely happy for Riley Leonard, with an academic background like that he will be setup for life after football. NIL bucks will make sure he already has a head start on that. However, I am equally sadded for College Football. We just have to accept the state of the sport and realize that Pandora's Box cannot be shut.

If you have the coffers for it, there will be players for hire in perpetuity.

College athletics have changed but the growth and development of young boys and young girls into young men and women has not changed.
