With Pearl Harbor Day having just passed...

Dec 9, 2022, 9:18 AM

It got me to thinking about my 2 deceased uncles who were in the Navy during WWII. Have y'all ever seen those WWII Navy photos and videos of the ships while nuclear tests were being performed in the Pacific? Both of my uncles were on those ships, and each would tell me very closely guarded stories about being there. They would never say that they felt like guinea pigs... they were abundantly proud that they were able to serve the USA in any way they could. I still have old coins, paper money, dishes, and other collectables that they brought back with them from their overseas travels while in the Navy. Along with another uncle's pocket Bible and bayonet from Omaha Beach, those items are prized possessions of mine and will be proudly passed along to my son (he is currently a Junior at Clemson) one day.
Both of my uncles who served on those ships died from cancer in their early 60's (neither smoked in case you're wondering). My dad (their older brother who couldn't serve because of a broken hip) is still alive at 93, and he will always suggest that the nuclear blasts that they were exposed to contributed to their early deaths. Those guys and gals back then certainly deserved to be called "The greatest generation" simply for their bravery, national service, and dedication to protecting the USA. I will forever cherish the items that remind me of them.

Amen and thank you for their service

A whole different mindset in that era. Hope your son values those items and stories as much as you. They are precious.

have three uncles that served in the war. All were Clemson boys. One served as a forward observer (yes, think about what that means) on Saipan and Okinawa. The others in Europe (artillery and infantry). My dad served in Korea.

Greatest Generation to be sure.
