Why do people freak out about spring games?

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck or start something. I'm genuinely curious. Why do people get so caught up in what they see in a spring game?

I do not know.

I learned a long time ago that what we see in the spring game doesn't amount to a lot come fall because I am not a football coach.

Well sir if you've been watching Clemson football...the product we have seen last three spring games has been almost identical to the product that has been fielded in the fall.

Goes back even further. Kelly Bryant's spring game performance was confirmation that he couldn't pass very well. Trevor Lawrence's spring game performance caused almost every other QB on the roster to transfer.

It’s often the same people who freak out in the 1st quarter of a game chat when we go down 7-0 then disappear in the 4th when we are up 42-10

Too bad we couldn't have had that eclipse on Saturday. That would have been freaky fo sho. Nice to see some freshmen and sophomores stepping up. Cautiously encouraged.

Agreed. Things don't usually change that much from one year to the next. IMO. Lost 4 and went 4-4 in the ACC last year. Average but not good. Schedule looks just about the same too except the first two -UGA being tougher than Duke and App St a totally different beast than Charleston Southern in the second game. Going to have to step it up in 24.

This is a silly oversimplification. It's better to stick to specifics.

I have been to/watched 30+ Spring Games. I have "freaked out" at zero of them. I have never booed Clemson. I even supported Tommy Bowden until the season he was fired. I have always understood that the Spring Game is a glorified practice and that playcalls, scheme and player chemistry should not be judged at all.

That said, if a QB looks really bad, after virtually a full season of looking nowhere near good enough to carry Clemson back to the elite, and another QB on the roster does look good enough, then that grabs my attention.

I never had anything alarming to say about DJ, TL, DW, Cole Stoudt, Kyle Parker, etc after a SPring game. I saw mistakes and sloppy play... but that's no big deal... UNLESS, you never see a high ceiling the whole practice. I witnessed what appeared to be a permanent fixture of Cade's football personality. This was made much more obvious by the performance of our 3rd string QB.

Cade made terrible decisions that someone with his experience should make more sparingly. Whether it be practice, a scrimmage or a game. The overwhelming majority of his snaps looked like he has barely developed at all. And his QB personality will hold the rest of the team back if it doesn't permanently change.

I don't think anyone should "freak out" about the spring game. However I also don't think anyone should ignore what they see as it has had some predictive value over the last several seasons. I mean they don't play it because whatever happens is completely irrelevant. Guys will be moved up and down the depth chart at least in part on their performance so fans shouldn't just ignore what the coaches are also seeing. Doesn't mean the sky's falling if everything isn't perfect but if a player looks subpar it can, you know, mean something especially if they've been here a while.

sign that our offense may be improving after three straight years of subpar results and they didn't get that. If our offense had been good last year i think most Clemson fans would've chalked up the poor performance on Saturday to it being a spring game. Right now the offense is just under the microscope at all times.

Because we looked terrible. Cade and Vizzina were not good. O line looked horrible. Receivers dropping passes. Not good
