Why did Saban choose now to retire? My speculation.

Lot of factors - age, Miss Terry telling him it was time to retire, wanting to spend more time with grandkids, etc.
But, I believe the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, was the "transition period" we are in.
I think Saban understands that in a few years, not sure how many, all this chaos with NIL, portal, opt outs, reaignment, et. al. will sort itself out and some sort of a "new normal" will be established. But, I think he looked at it and said, "By the time this new normal comes it will be very close to when I would retire anyway and I just don't want to go through the chaos to get to there from here."

Tired of the “state” of college football… exactly what will take out Dabo and other coaches if limits aren’t instituted.

Heard that he had specific issues with certain renegade schools making contact with players and giving them a plan to declare for the portal and we'll pick you up and pay you this much money...included were upfront payments immediately as proof to induce the player...when confronted player confessed...when reported nothing was done...Saban had enough! Without specific rules, punishments, sanctions on schools, players, NIL collectives and most of all boosters, college football is dead...the wild west...fastest gun, biggest checkbook, biggest liars, money hungry me first players who don't care about the education and crooks on every street corner! In a perverted way the fans caused this...win at any cose..U of Chicago 1939!

it was pre meditated a bit longer than people think he bought the 17 million dollar house then signed a 9 year extension ( more free millions for nothing) i knew when i saw him do those two things close together he was gone.

I believe Saban when he said he was at the point of no longer being able to do things the way he thought was necessary.
I respect the man for not hanging on too long like Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno.

I wish it had to do with that bc that would maybe force some much needed changes … but he already said in a presser or interview (not sure which) that it had nothing to do with it… he said something to the effect a coaches job is to keep up with the times and Transition with change which surprised me … I wish he would have said he was kind of tired of some of the aspects of what college football has become.

If you listen to his interview…. The REASON he retired is that his age is finally catching up with him. His grind is up till 2am football, up at 7am. That’s catching up with him. Also coaching staff and players are now asking him to be there for another 3-5 years and that just didn’t seem possible anymore and he’s not a liar and didn’t want to coach on a year to year basis because that’s not fair to the university or the players or staff.

Not sure what you and bbo have going on but you are correct. It was a very touching interview and it had nothing to do with the current landscape of football.
This past season took a lot out of him and one reason is because he had to be involved with the defense more than usual. But as you stated, it was the grind. That fire in his belly. Nothing more. Nothing less.

He 100% made a risk vs reward decision based on the current state of college football and where he is in his career. Even if one doesn't fully agree, it's downright disengenious to not give merit to the notion, regardless of what he said in the interview.

Just don't see it that way because he was specifically asked about the landscape of cfb. He hates it. Doesn't hate the transfers but not in agreement with nil. Exactly what Dabo has said repeatedly. But asked if that was part of his decision, he said no.
Really did say he just didn't have that fire and this year took a lot out. He said it was that simple. Obviously why it was a quick decision. I like Bret, love all you guys but I could just feel it he was being genuine. If you think about it, it did take everyone by surprise.

The surprise aspect, to me,

is the most telling part. That it wasn't a planned decision, which only further supports the idea that he's done with the circus. All these guys are going to tow the line until they don't have to anymore, See Gene Chiz. Agree to disagree. It's all a matter of opinion anyway. Cheers!

You are totally correct. He said it was more and more difficult to tell recruits and their families he would be at BAMA for their careers. Of course now, how many recruits tell their coaches the same thing?

Exactly. I don't know why it can't be as simple as he's 72 and ready to retire. It isn't like sticking around to work himself to death for one more championship is going to further his legacy.

That's all it was. He hasn't lost his edge as the other poster states. He's still sharp as a tack. He simply didn't think he was up to the task of the grind to the standard he himself set. Nothing more, nothing less. This past season took a lot out of him. Mainly the defense.

the timing just doesn't match up. He's 72 and not built anymore for the grind, sure, but you will never convince me that he wants to reinvent himself as a recruiter, coach and manager of the greatest legacy in current football history just because he turned 72 or he had a rough season. That dog don't hunt.

Saban would not have retired if the landscape of college football was the same as 10 years ago. His wife has nothing to do with it even though most say it does.

Maybe but I doubt the transition of CFB was anything more than a minor factor. At his age he was tired of the grind and ready for a change. He has commercials, a likely tv gig, business interests and family to more than fill his day so why not?

I reality he just got tired of the grind and couldn't or wouldn't give it his full attention anymore. I think the NIL / portal era is also a factor.

I retired at age 65 and highly recommend it.
Nick and I are wired completely differently. If I were in his shoes I would have retired no later than the National Championship win over ND.
There would have been too many national parks to visit and too many hikes for me to go on to work any longer than that.

That and the fact Kirby is the new King in the SEC at this time. Believe it or not there are programs that have much more money to buy a team than Alabama. This was a factor.

This won’t be popular but I’ll say it anyway-
Everyone fawns over Saban and his coaching prowess. I’m sure he was a great coach, but like spurrier pointed out, we will really never know just how great. Saban got the #1 recruiting class EVERY year, ALL 4 and 5 stars. That’s like getting 25 first round draft pics every year! Before NIL Bama had the “everyone gets a car program” and many agents and even past players have admitted bama payed players. You don’t get the #1 class every single year without the deck being tilted your way. I don’t care for Jimbo, but Jimbo was not blowing smoke when he threatened to tell what Nick had been up to when they had their spat. Jimbo absolutely knew the dirt on Nick and he let it be known. This all came about when Nick called A&M out for buying that #1 class.
NIL has changed the game. Everyone can now get away with what bama was doing before, in violation of the rules. The table is not quite so tilted Saban’ way now.
Nick may have hated NIL but only because he was losing his overwhelming advantage. I’m sure he was tired and probably ready for a break. I’m sure the reasons he gave were real too, but I think the real reason was he saw the writing on the wall. He was not going to continue the domination he had enjoyed.
Just my opinion
