I don't recall Walter Cronkite ever saying a kind word about us. I don't think Rockford or Mannix did either. And I never trusted that Russian dude with the weird birthmark on his head. Just curious how it all began, and how they got all the refs and powers-that-be against us.

Correct.
ESPN was founded on the heels of the 1978 Gator Bowl.
Little Ole Clemson whipped the OhioSt Buckeyes in a slugfest that few in the media saw coming.
The debacle of legendary coach Woody Hayes slugging Clemson player Charlie Bauman on the sidelines as he returned an interception to end the last gap effort of the buckeyes to come from behind.
The real kicker was that Iconic coach Woody Hayes would never coach again in what proved to a career ending display of unsportsmanlike like ibehavior that bordered on illegal assault.
How dare little Ole Clemson end the career of one of the most storied careers on the gridiron.
They have disliked us and have had the knives out ever since 😉

The military industrial complex turned against us in 1955 when we stopped being a military school and became a public coeducational institution. Ever since then, the league administrators and game officials have sought to punish us every chance they get. If you check, you’ll see that most of them were once in the military.
