Mayes has been horrible for 4 years.

Sewell comes and plays just as bad against Miami. So we have no answer at that position. Darn, seems like that position is a great portal candidate for next year, huh?

No… We have 10 to 11 guys ready to go in that room…..

All kidding aside, that room needs to be bigger than 15. Our peers are out performing us and have been for many years.

It's probably a perfect candidate for some really experience coaching for the two guys we have that plays those positions along with having some experience coaching for other positions. In fact, I truly believe that some experience coaching would fix most of our problems, and I say this bc we already have in most positions just as good of talent that we could pick up from the portal, but they need really good coaches for those spots of weakness...

I like Austin. Great guy and it looked early on that we finally made progress. Unfortunately, I believe I was completely wrong.

Sadly, I love the idea of Spiller and Austin, not Grisham, being here and it all being a love fest and them doing well at their positions. Doesn’t look like it will happen though

Honestly, I was OK with all the of those guys as coaches mainly bc of them being Clemson grads and prior Clemson FB players, but, I totally believe that it was way to much inexperience to be put on that side of the ball pretty much all at once. Young coaches with very little coaching experience learns to be really good coaches by working with good coaches that has tons of coaching experience... A first grader wouldn't do well as a teacher for other first graders!!!!

Ball security (both), pass protection (specifically Mafah), screaming at the coaches(Shipley), and just to repeat it leading the natio no in fumbles. Also the inability to gain 1 yard (although more playcalling and OL)… other than that they look great.

Mafah is better at pass pro than Shipley***

Mayes is rather interesting. Of course tigernet and all the Clemson sites pick which ever rating service is the best and say we have a 4* blah blah. Even though Mayes was rated by espn as the #2 tackle, his composite rating wasn't high and his school list (commitable offers) wasn't that impressive. Otherhand, Bryn Tucker was highly recruited. Why no development?

Linthicum was rated as a good center but as an oline, composite wasn't high and offers were not good.

You've got to really dig into and analyze the rating because our articles and Dabo spin it as the best player ever.

Pennington, very highly recruited and rated. Same with Leigh. Why haven't Bryn, Leigh, Pennington not developed. These guys were evaluated and recruited by 2 former coaches. Bates being one of them. Caldwell the other.

Imho, I think we have a two-fold problem, and have for awhile. Not sure what type of oline quality we looked for, big guys vs more mobile, flex etc. Second, I think we have a developmental problem for sure. Is it Austin, or Dabo. Cross training in theory is great. It's what the pros do. College level, not so much. Not many come along that can be.

I agree...

Ill also one more problem I think we have. The scheme we operate doesnt fit the physical requirement for our OL. I think they are extremely undersized...I know Clemson aims to get OL that fit the mold of being able to play multiple positions and possess the physcial capablilites to run up tempo, but our OL is severely overmatched. The fact that Vincent is literally the same size as he was a freshman is highly alarming.

I dont think we lack size on the OL. Its strength and mentality.***

Exactly. Linthicum wasnt generally rated overall as people often post on here. He might still be good though, but generally wasnt rated that high by most analysts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As bad as our line is, he's barely seen the field.

I believe they will move Sewell to center next year to replace Putnam.

LT: Leigh or Sadler
LG: Tate
OC: Sewell or Linthicum
RG: Parks
RT: Miller

If everyone reaches their potential, yes.

Four guys in the 4th and 5th season.

Miller and Sadler in year 3.

Sewell in year 2.

Leigh was a 5 star, the rest were 4 stars.

I'm not sure that any of us know what the real problem is, but we all realize that when they get kicked around like they did at Miami, something is wrong. It is up to Dabo to fix it and I think maybe it took something like the Miami game or this (and last) season as a whole for him to realize it. I am sure that preseason, according to his coach speak, that he thought we were solid. I do know that when teams like Nebraska had such great offensive lines, those players did not get on the field, generally, until they redshirt junior year.

I had a friend many years ago who was a D1 DL...

He told me that he would lick his chops when he saw a freshman or a sophomore in front of him no matter how hyped that player was. He said experience wins that battle every time.

We’ve been a poor 4th quarter team this year. I think strength and conditioning may have something to do with this. Also, more qualitatively, it really seems that our opponents are more “fit” than us…in terms of musculature, endurance, and raw power and speed.

We have 5 lineman in the NFL:
Shatley (center)
Simpson (guard)
Anchrum (guard)
Carmen (tackle)
McFadden (guard)

Bama has 9, Penn State has 5, Wisconsin has 8..... I am surprised that a few other names aren't in there for us, but it seems like we have about the same as other schools that we think have better offensive lines.

I have been critical of our O line play the last few years, but it seems like the position group has been one of the weaker links compared to other position groups in the past. It is the hardest to project and a guy like Mitch Hyatt and Blake Miller don't come around too often.

I do think we have overcome some gaps in the line with two generational QBs and being WRU during that time. I think the last three years, for whatever the reason, allowed teams to sell out on stopping the run and with DJU and Cade, I would throw the kitchen sink at them too if I was an opposing D Coordinator.

It will be interesting to see how the offense as a group responds the rest of the season. I do think we will give ND a really good game, but I do not think we will run the table. I think at the end of the season, there will be plenty to look forward to next year and we will continue to recruit well. I do think Dabo will be forced to make some staffing changes and I hope Riley stays on. I do not think he is the problem.

Should be a fun Saturday... Go Tigers !!!
