What a mess!

Dec 15, 2022, 6:48 AM

This sums up pretty well for the average fan what the coaching/recruiting staff is really dealing with.

Excellent article and facts, not an opinion. Although, once again Dabo had a solution for this and the college football world wouldn't listen. I still like Dabo's solution of having the early signing day in August... and said early signing recruits pay a penalty and sit for a year if they transfer.

You've got to have rules and consequences.

Transfer portal didn’t change the LoI. When they sign, it’s a contract that they will go to that school for a year. Another LoI school can’t give them a scholarship until released by the first school. Only non-LoI schools in the ncaa are the service academies.

But there's no consequences for them entering the transfer portal. What's to stop someone from signing their LOI at the early signing period in December and then entering the transfer portal before ever playing for that team?

There is a transfer period open until mid January, and then another one the first 2 weeks of May. Maybe they didn't like how that first spring camp went and transfer in May. The transfer option with no penalty basically makes the LOI worthless. They could sign the LOI in December and decide to transfer the next day the way I understand it.

If it's within that first year of the LOI, they have to get a release in order to receive a scholarship from another school. It's a binding contract that all of the LOI schools have to honor to remain in the LOI system. This is independent from the transfer rules.

Most schools are going to release a kid from the LOI to avoid the negative publicity.

Dec 15, 2022, 7:43 AM

.... the February signing day was made for him. After the mad dash of the December signing and the transfer portal have settled down, teams will know what their needs are. And players will know which schools need them.

This kid won't have to worry about signing with a team only to see a week later they signed a couple of running backs in the portal which means he will be relegated to the scout team for the first two years, at least, of his college career.

And, he won't have to worry about signing for a mid-major team only to find out the school he really wanted to go to lost a running back in the portal and didn't sign anybody from HS and now they really want him to come.

This kid is either a great high school/ decent college rb, or someone missed on his grading. Either way, he will be picked up by a lower D1 school, prove he is where he is, or explode, and he will transfer to a better school. It sounds like he just needs an opportunity...

Good point! Makes the article seem like a waste of ink***

…committees or whoever-is-supposedly-in-charge of all of this, thinks that all of this is FUNNY.

I mean it. I think that they get their jollies from watching all of this.

Off-camera, they are grinning from ear-to-ear the whole time.

If there was ever a time for the Power 5 programs to EXIT and form a NEW LEAGUE, NOW is the time.

But, if they make this crucial move, they have to FOLLOW IT THROUGH to its completion, and NOT GIVE IN to the NCAA trying to come at the last second to try and SALVAGE the situation.

The time for half-measures is OVER. NO MORE!

Sometimes you have to burn the old barn to the ground or completely level a dilapidated building to make way for something new.

Renovating the old building doesn’t get you where you need to be…level and re-build.

The Power 5 programs need to, once and for all, walk away from the NCAA and build something BETTER & NEW.

The more I watch the effect that NIL and the Transfer Portal are having on college football, the more glad I am that we have the culture we do. A whole lot of parents are not going to be eager to throw their 18-year-old sons into the Wild West meat market that is modern college football; there are going to be those - and frankly, these are the kids from the families we want - who are old-fashioned, and just want their kids developed in a stable situation where they know who their coaches and teammates are going to be, that are going to be treated as actual student-athletes and not whatever-this-is-right-now where a kid is expected to be a football player, a social media star, an endorsement machine who gets paid six or even seven figures to hawk Pepsi and Nike or the local Ford dealership. And who is somehow expected to keep his head on straight, his feet on the ground, and go be an actual college student on top of all that?

Who are we kidding? Really. Name the 18-year-old who's going to keep his head glued on straight in the face of all that. It certainly wouldn't have been me, I can tell you that much.

I cannot even imagine what the locker-room cultures of some of these schools are morphing into. How are coaches even remotely supposed to keep a lid on egos, on resentment, on envy, on...everything, really, in the face of all those distractions, especially when other schools are tampering with your players without penalty now 24/7, trying to feed those resentments, trying to work their families, trying to lure them over to their teams even as you're trying to poach their roster....

How are staffs and players and families supposed to deal right now?

I'd rather we just stay Clemson, thank you. And I'll thank Dabo for the quixotic anachronism that avoids as much of that noise and chaos as possible, and just focuses on school and football, and the positive development of the student-athlete. I very much think it's how Clemson weathers this present storm.

NOT trying to play the same game as others. There are plenty of top players from families who will want the more traditional approach we embody, we'll just need to get our share of those guys.

Q

I think you may be on to something here and I support it wholeheartedly (with some religious reservations).

But here is my question, How many fans and supporters will continue to back this "Clemson Culture" if it means we go 9 & 3 or 10 & 2 every year - if the Orange Bowl is our pinnacle rather than the CFP ??

I could make that adjustment, if I was sure that our "culture" was living up to its name, but I am not sure how many other supporters would.

Re: What a mess!

Q is correct to some degree. Dabo will and has changed. No nil isn't at the forefront as some schools like t am... they're the extreme. But, we have plenty of stars on our team that's making money. Got dj buying gifts for teammates etc.

So it's not archaic as Q suggests that will be our survival, it's how Dabo navigates and adapts that will determine our future. It's the correct balance that's tricky.

Q posts excellent stuff but I think he's oversimplified on this subject.
