Tradition says a cow wandered onto the field during a game and Mississippi State won the game. The cowbells were used for good luck after that.

It’s one of the best college football rivalry games every year. That MSU defense in the 99 Peach Bowl was nasty, they just lacked offense. That team was coached by Jackie Sherrill who Joe Paterno once spoke about “ in being the reason Paterno wouldn’t retire is because he didn’t want to leave college football in the hands of guys like Sherrill”. The irony of that statement.

There’s also video of Tommy West and Jackie Sherrill almost going to blows after a game during a Memphis/ MSU game
