Very interesting thread...SEC/ESPN not on same page...

Sounds like SEC wants Clemson/FSU to fend off Fox/B1G, but ESPN is against it for financial reasons. ESPN is pushing Cal/Stanford to ACC in a desperate bid to stop further realignment.

ESPN is going bankrupt. No way the dying ACC should take Stanford and Cal. Makes no sense and still shortchanges us. I am beginning to think the BIG might be better than being tied to ESPN.

rivals, ease of travel, etc., but they are tied EXCLUSIVELY to ESPN until 2035. No renegotiations, no more $$ and beholden to the mouse, again!

I said in a previous post that ESPN will end up screwing over Clemson. ESPN could care less about Clemson and FSU’s financial future and success. ESPN is fighting for their future and financial success. It would be easier for them to have Cal and Stanford move to the ACC and the idiots in the ACC be happy with that and shut up for now.

Politics has destroyed ESPN and I will be glad when they go down in flames.

Well they ain't real smart. Anyone paying that Yahoo Pat McAfee $85mil for 5yrs, paying him more than Herbie and fired David Pollack who was only making $85k a year, they deserve to go bankrupt!

Any little bit of additional money that ESPN throws to the ACC schools will not be worth it to haul across the country for Cal and Stanford. Adding those two schools to the league does nothing for the current conference schools but only helps ESPN. Tell the network to pound sand.

This rumor actually seems rational. Although the TV providers want premium content, they cannot afford to lose too many fanbases in the process. They still quantity even if the overall quality is limited.
FSU and Clemson to either of the top conferences limits primer college football to less than 40 teams. Keeping FSU/Clemson in the ACC, even if you have to pay more than teams are worth, keeps the ACC and Big 12 relevant. This keeps another 40 fanbases involved and increases overall viewership. The more people interested in college football the more people tune in to prime time games and the CFP.
The question is can ESPN work out a deal that gives FSU and Clemson enough resources to stay competitive with the B1G/SEC long term?

Finally, someone who gets it...
The reason these massive TV deals are possible is massive viewership numbers. The blue blood giants don't command millions of views by themselves. It's the other 60+ power 5 teams that feel they're a part of the club that watch all the big games every week even when their team isn't in it. The more teams you relegate to the "G League" the less overall viewers. If the biggest ACC names go to the SEC and B1G, you've just went from 64 schools feeling relevant to ~40. Everyone's viewership tanks.
