You can make the argument in the FSU game that a missed FG and turnovers lost that game. It was a one score game that could/should have been won in regulation. The Tigers missed that late FG and wouldn't have needed it had there not been a strip 6 earlier. I concede that a rational human could make and support that argument.

However, to say Clemson lost to Duke solely b/c of turnovers and missed FGs can't explain away a 21 point loss. Yes, turnovers have context (Red Zone TOs suck) but you can't argue the Tigers giving away 3 TOs result in TDs but not say the same for Duke's 2 TOs. At best, the Tigers were -1 in scoring opportunities in comparison. If you give Clemson credit for "what if points", they left 27 points on the table by missing the 2 FGs and giving away 3 possessions. You have to make the same argument in Duke's case that they gave away 2 TDs with their turnovers. That is not a 21 point difference.

The biggest problem Clemson has right now is the lack of a difference maker on offense. The big gains in the running game used to be house calls with ETN. The difference he made with how the Tigers were defended is overlooked. Even when Cornell Powell was the biggest deep threat the Tigers had, it was b/c how ETN forced the defense to deal with him. It didn't hurt that Trevor could put a dime on anybody. With the current roster, if there was a homerun threat at RB or one of the WR spots, this team would look MUCH different.

I don't care if that player comes from the portal or if the light magically comes on for one of the guys on the roster right now. The truth is that's the most critical need the offense has. It has to be filled before us fans can go back to comfortable 4th quarters against anybody.

OK, let's dive into this stat list a little. I will use

passing yards, since QB is the most visible position on the team, and passing yards are his most visible stat.

1. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado: Followed his coach, who also happened to be his dad, from one school to the next. Nobody else was getting him. This also means he has been in the same system the whole time he has been playing, which certainly aids his development.

2. Michael Penix, Jr, Washington.: In his time at Indiana, which was THREE YEARS, he suffered season ending injuries, not one, not two, but THREE TIMES. He literally had nothing on paper to suggest he was a transfer portal bonanza. If anything, Indiana had moved on from him, which was why he transferred to Washington in 2022, where he turned his career around LAST YEAR. Clemson would have crucified Dabo if he had gone after Penix in 2022.

3. Jayden Daniels, LSU: Had a fine three year career at Arizona State, and would have stayed there, except for two things. They were being put on probation, and several of his coaches, including his offensive coordinator, left the program as a result. He transferred to LSU, and I would bet money that destination was picked before his name ever hit the portal, we had no shot even if we had wanted him. And, let's also remember, he is a FIFTH SEASON SUPER SENIOR this year. The only reason he is still playing at all in college is the "Covid season."

4. Nicholas Vattiato, Middle Tennessee: Non-transfer, third year player who just took over as starter for good this year, at MIDDLE TENNESSEE.

5. Carson Beck, Georgia: Non-transfer, and let's face it, a badly trained monkey could look good at QB for Georgia right now. That's how much talent Kirby Smart has stockpiled. If anything QB is the one position that is sort of lacking. Let's not forget, this is the same guy who couldn't figure out how to use Justin Fields.

6. Bradyen Schager, Hawaii: Non-transfer, now in his third year as a starter, having started 3 games his freshman year of 2021, all last year, and all this year.

7. Brady Cook, Missouri: Non-transfer, in his fourth year at Missouri.

8. Caleb Williams, USC: Seriously, does anybody believe Williams was ever going anywhere other than to USC with Lincoln Riley, when both left Oklahoma? If you do, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona you might be interested in, cheap.

9. Bradyen Fowler-Nicolosi, Colorado State: Non-transfer, in his second year at Colorado State.

10. TJ Finley, Texas State: He is already on his THIRD school, having first been at LSU, transferring to Auburn, and then to Texas State when Hugh Freeze took over at Auburn and made it clear he was going in another direction at QB. I suspect we would have had no interest in him, even if we were looking.

So, there you have it. I see nobody in this Top Ten that Clemson could have gotten, or even expressed an interest in at the time of their transfer, that was not already locked in to their next destination.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I am NOT against taking someone from the portal. But, evidently my criteria and Dabo's are pretty much the same. It has to be someone who is significantly better than what we already have, and at a position of need, AND WHO FITS OUR CULTURE, AND IS WILLING TO SIGN WITH CLEMSON. And, as can be seen just from the QB list, some of these "raging portal success stories" had NOTHING at the time of their transfer to indicate future stardom. A lot of the Portal protagonists seem to conveniently forget that little nugget of information.

over a third over our "developed" players are leaving......
