All you need is a foot in the door … and then anything can happen.
In one of the Soccer National Championships in the 80’s (1987?) … Clemson was the 23rd team of 24 selected and beat the #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 seeds in the tournament … and won the championship.
So perhaps it should be… “so you’re saying there’s a chance?!” 😄

If we can’t win the ACC , with today’s makeup , we probably don’t belong in the CFP. I would prefer to be on the Big10 1st, in a merged ACC -Big12 , while kicking some non football 1st schools to the curb 2nd, or SEC, while holding my nose 3rd. Staying in the ACC is the worst case scenario.

12-team playoff will look something like this, for the conceivable future:
ACC champ
SEC champ
B1G champ
B12 champ
highest ranked non-Power4 champ
SEC championship game loser
Ohio State or Michigan, whichever is not B1G champ
SEC team
SEC team
SEC team
B1G team
Notre Dame, unless they suck in which case there may be a B12 team or maybe a Cinderella team

Very important to be a high seed. Based on historical data on match-up predictors and straight-line probability, the 12 seed has about a 1% chance of winning the playoff, while the #1 seed will be closer to 28%. The champ will be a 3 seed or higher

I'd say the champ will typically be a 4 seed or higher. There have already been two 4-seed winners. 9 years of CFP:
1-seed: 3 titles
2-seed: 3 titles
3-seed: 1 title
4-seed: 2 titles

It might be so with some who would see Clemson sell its soul for a handful of top guns purchased with NIL money through a bidding war in the portal.
It's not so with 98.5% of us who want Clemson to remain the light of virtue which shines alone among the top most winning football teams in the past 15 years.
