The distance to travel to these schools will make it vary expensive for the athletic programs. Since the current ACC leadership made a completely awful TV contract to put the ACC in this position, how does adding these schools bring more money to the ACC. It seems to me that it just increased the costs to the athletic departments.

In which the money for all those distant travels comes from fan donations to the athletic department, along with the pisspoor dollars from the A C C:)

As an SMU graduate, I am glad they joined the ACC. It was in their best interest.
They have never recovered from the Death Penalty in 1987. Joining the ACC will be great for SMU.
Great School and a great road trip for Clemson Fans. In the heart of Dallas. They can play in the Cowboy's stadium, the Cotton Bowl stadium or the on-campus stadium. They have options for big games and possibly even an ACC Championship game down the road instead of just Orlando or Charlotte.
It will be great for their recruiting, and Clemson.

BUT, it is time for Clemson to seriously consider the SEC in the future and have official discussions. It is not urgent, but in the long run it is in our best interest. Academically, the ACC has the best conference in the country. The fact is that we will always be at a financial disadvantage as long as we are in the ACC. We don't need to do anything stupid like join the BIG 10.

The other two are in California, Berkley is concealed carry territory, right by Oakland. Stanford is OK if you can stand the homeless people everywhere in Palo Alto. Not worth a trip, unless you are just looking to follow the Tigers out there....
The best way to show our vote is on the football field this fall....

Go Tigers, Whoop Dook!

I know you jest and if not I doubt that degree is ever offered, but do not kid yourself. If you think Clemson University is a microcosm of Upstate SC socially and politically, your head is in the sand! I love Clemson, having achieved both my undergraduate and graduate degrees there. My daughter just graduated from Clemson. It may come as a shock to you, but the woke agenda and hard left mindset is already very firmly engrained in a great number of professors and leadership at Clemson now. This has been the case for quite some time. We didn’t need Cal or Stanford to make that happen! My daughter and I had many discussions about this topic during her time at Clemson. Her estimate was 90% of her professors were hard left and openly espoused their views to students. She may be off on the percentage but if you’re thinking our beloved Clemson is the bastion of conservatism for SC you have your head in the sand.

Id rather our students be taught actual history vs the white washed version that they are teaching in many red states across the country including FL where I currently reside. Teach the facts about US history and let the student decide how they feel about it.

I think this will work out fine. We can't find a way to leave the ACC without losing more money. That's obvious. In addition, the Clemson brand is more than money. Who on here believes that the current BIG, SEC & ACC will still exist as is in 5 years? I would think that big-time football will be separate from the NCAA long before our ACC GOR runs out. More change is coming!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly! Just dont see anything worth getting upset over.

3

Sep 1, 2023, 12:02 PM

It certainly doesn’t seem as though the current model will hold up.
Additionally, the focus on politics by folks in this thread is just weird.

Like you, in the meantime, I’ll hope I can get in a Clemson at Cal or Clemson at Stanford game before this falls apart.

If we're still in the ACC when that time comes our program may not beat SMU as we'll have completely lost the ability to recruit at the level we have...it's simple, if we don't get out of the ACC we ourselves will become another SMU.

Re: TNET: It's official: ACC adds three schools as new members

Sep 1, 2023, 12:12 PM

What a complete and utter joke. Well it is what it is but it's quite simple, if we don't leave the ACC you can say goodbye to us being a national power ever again. They might as well rename the conference the AAC as it's nothing but a flaming pile of poo.

Our ability to compete was already dicey with the other powers...now it's a done deal. If we don't get the hell out of the ACC our future is clear, mid major team with mid level talent.

That is not speculation, that's what every single expert, person within our team along with people around the country (ie the FSU AD was spot on with his assessment, as has all the other people that 'get' what's going on and the future going down this path).

Let's see how good Neff is cause the bottom line we can leave the ACC if we want, they've figured out the GOR situation, we're just not being invited by the SEC or Big10. Which it sounds like ESPN is working against us with the SEC so we need to lobby the Big10 for an invite to force the SEC's hand.

If we don't, well we're basically now the Mountain West of the East Coast.

Dabo always says that too few schools emphasize the benefits of academics. The ACC is strong academically and will become much stronger with the addition of these three top academic institutions. If we can take a long term perspective, we will see that this will greatly benefit the ACC.

Sep 1, 2023, 12:20 PM

Haha, again, if you want to be a quasi Ivy League conference, great, then yes it's a good move. If you want us to be relevant in football ever again this was awful...actually it doesn't matter too much, the addition of these three garbage football schools doesn't change much, simple fact is if we stay in the ACC (with these adds or not), our football future is doomed. And that's not hyperbole, that's how the numbers and facts pencil out.

What a complete and utter joke - the Mountain West of the East. Basically there will be a Power 2, maybe 3...and the ACC will be looked upon as a secondary (ie WAC, AAC, etc) conference moving forward.

Re: TNET: It's official: ACC adds three schools as new members

Sep 1, 2023, 12:45 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: It's official: ACC adds three schools as new members ]

I heard a national media 'expert' (don't remember who) earlier this week explaining that the ACC would to do this to maintain their minimum 14 member threshold. Going below that would trigger a renegotiation with ESPN from a much weaker stance.

He speculated that this move signaled that Clemson/Fla St have found an 'out' and would be leaving the conference, and the addition of these three schools was preemptive to maintain the numbers status.

Low TV $ due to weak teams? Solution: Add more weak teams.

Sep 1, 2023, 12:15 PM

This seems so stupid to me. The ACC isn't worth as many TV dollars because we don't have many good football schools, let alone ones with big alumni bases. So we add 3 more crappy football schools, 2 of which are really small SMU (7k students) & Stanford (8k) and one medium sized school (Cal, 30k) that has never been good at football, and likely never will be due in large part to alumni apathy and academic requirements.

For Cal & Stanford, it seems abusive to make your student athletes travel 3-time-zones to the East Coast for almost every game. I can't imagine many Cal & Stanford recruits would sign up for that, therefore their recruiting and football performance is likely to decline further.

I can't believe that so many ACC school presidents are onboard with this. But apparently the athletic-revenue freeloading ACC schools are willing to screw the ACC in the long term in order to make sure that ESPN can't renegotiate downward if Clemson & FSU leave.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Low TV $ due to weak teams? Solution: Add more weak teams.

Sep 1, 2023, 12:22 PM

Spot on...it's a joke, we basically just add more poo to an already burning poo pile.

There really isn't any other, more simple and direct was to say it.

And NCSU voted for it likely because they know if/when FSU and Clemson leave, there's a good chance UNC leaves too - NCSU is like the red headed step child that's going to get left behind, because they are a mid-level school and athletic program.

Re: TNET: It's official: ACC adds three schools as new members

Sep 1, 2023, 1:46 PM

In the meantime, I have to believe Clemson and FSU are making some progress on a negotiated exit to the SEC, with GOR concessions from ESPN to join their other "property". This has to put more pressure on our administration to make something happen with a greater sense of urgency.
