I agree, that last paragraph left a lot to be desired.

The article wasn't really a ranking, just 12 defenses that could define the 2024 season. While not really "ranked", we were the 4th team mentioned, after Ohio St, Bama, & FSU. SMU is mentioned toward the end of the article.

Doesn't seem to be a real theme to the article. Some teams looking to bounce back or take a step forward this year in the second+ year with new coaches, some teams looking to maintain a good defense with some key losses (Clemson).

They showed concern with Clemson sticking with a 4-3 while other teams are moving to 3-3-5 defenses, while admitting that we still had a solid D last year using that strategy. We lost 4 of our top 5 d-linemen, but still have 3 big guys in Woods, Capehart & Page.

A whole lot of offseason nothings
