Nope, the bad news is that this is only game one and there

are 11 more to go. You said it at the first of the article, we got physically whipped by Duke, from the very beginning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure it feels like YOU got physically whipped

1

but 200+ yards rushing tells another tale. Plus, as D Hood says, we went away from the run too often - it could have easily been more, much more.

We weren't "whipped" - we made too many critical mistakes. Two different things.

But the knee-jerk Fans will take the worst sounding word they can find, for sure, and beat it into hamburger.

Figures lie and liars figure... using the eye test, we got beat in every phase of the game. No need to sugarcoat it.

That's the problem: you "see" with your emotions

I can't help it if Half the Board is immature about their Tigers. It is what it is, but ignoring facts isn't helpful.

Unpopular comment so soon after the bad loss, but you nailed it.

Erratic tackling was one of the ‘physical’ deficiency.

Late Q4 it was a lost cause. Defense let down when morale was shot.

Technique (knowledge of where to go and when to go, (?) blocking scheme / blocking technique / FG kicker deficiency (?) with FG unit) was the reason we lost.

Technique matters. Coaching staff needs to wake up.

Glad to see there's some reason left in the Faithful

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the Ford's last night.

Well, come to think of it, that might've been a pretty flat fly.

Two things above all. A major ingredient missing was the ability to throw downfield. This requires open space and separation. To do so effectively a team must have 1) excellent receiver routes, designed by the OC, and 2) Receivers who can create separation with their physical ability

Neither were evident tonight

Deep throws require a QB who possesses the arm strength to get the ball downfield without having to burst blood vessels while making the heave.

Our offensive scheme cannot atone for that fundamental deficiency.

BTW, that particular deficiency was in evidence last year (when DJ was not in the game).

The run game did look good won't for long if we can find a way the pass the ball downfield. Teams will quickly start stacking the box on us

Goodwin isn’t the guy. Dabo needs to let the o-coordinator call plays and stay away. Period. We also need to use the portal and NIL. Evolve or die. We’re dying. We’ve lost three of four.

Defense wasn’t the reason we lost. Duke has an excellent offense; our D was in perfect position when Mascoll &/or Carter &/or XT failed to complete the sack of Leonard (you know, when Leonard made his 40 yard TD run).

The last TD that we gave up in garbage time was when we were completely demoralized. Understandably demoralized.

At what point will Jeff Scott be asked to come back to start coaching the wide receiver group. ( Time to say goodbye to Grisham ). Goodwin is probably a good analyst and no more. With the media restricted more so this year from camp and practice something may rotten and smells inside the program. Never have I seen a Tiger team with absolutely no fire, no passion from the players or the coaches. WTH is going on?

Wide Receivers and the O-line. That is where our biggest flaws are. Dabo needs to seriously get talent out of the portal. All this talk about culture, look at FSU, they have their culture back and they got it out of the portal. Look at Colorado, they were a team on fire, so much energy and they got all of that out of the portal.

This team needs an overhaul. I love Dabo, and I really respect his morals and will to stick with his team, but something has got to give. You can have culture, you can set these kids up for their future on and off the field and still use the portal.

Honestly, I am questioning if we even make a bowl now. I have zero confidence in winning vs FSU, ND, UNC, NC State, or even SC. Then if you even drop one of the other games vs Miami, Wake, or Cuse, you aren't even .500! Heck, even GT looked like they were playig with passion, and it makes you question if even that game is a guaranteed win. Every single game on our schedule at this point is a big question mark. I would not even be the least bit surprised if we are a 5-7 team this year.

OL played OK. Interior OL played well.

Many of us were delusional when dreaming that LT spot would miraculously not take a step back after Jacobs Blocking Trophy LT Jordan McFadden moved on.

I’m betting that T.Leigh and C.Sadler will improve meaningfully over the course of what will be a 4 loss season.

Yes! We need changes in the WR room. To call Clemson WRU is a joke, the WR's can't get separation and we are seriously lacking talent in the room. Get in the portal and start finding some guys that want to play, the group we have doesn't look like they want to be here. turn the offense over to Riley and get out of his way .his looks like a Dabo lead offense. Riley is making 2 million a year, let him do his thing. dabo needs to go back to being CEO, and let the coaches coach. If it doesn't work out, he needs to make the tuff decisions and fire personnel.

The HARSH reality is that Duke.....

1

Sep 5, 2023, 12:55 AM

isn't anything near elite. With that said...all credit to them b/c they performed when we didn't.

But I was underwhelmed frankly. We just got beat by a nice team....nothing elite. 17-33 was the stat by the QB that is rated third by NFL scouts. Really didn't establish a run game except on his QB runs where we lacked basic fundamentals of containment and tackling. An elite Top 10 team would destroy this Duke team by 30+. Our 2018 team would've won by five TDs. I say this not to discredit Duke...ALL credit to them.....but to illustrate what a SS this was tonight by us. When Bama beat us in 2017, or when OSU beat us in the Sugar....or when LSU beat us in the NCG....well, those were simply superior teams. Losing like this is MUCH more damning IMO

We are soft at OL; lacking in elite talent at WR and lack speed at WR and LB.

Roster management is and remains the most glaring issue....

RPO inside the 10 on 1st was risky, not running the sneak inside the 1 was outright dumb. We should have had atleast 15 more carries & Cade should be around 30 passes a game. We weren't physically whipped. We gave up a few plays on D & played the worst in 10yrs on offense. Zero downfield passes was beyond confusing but we could have easily won this game with better play calling. I love our staff but we screwed up tonight and weren't able to overcome the mistakes. Devastating loss, really disappointed but we gotta find a way to come back better than ever. GO TIGERS!!!

Re: TNET: Quick Thoughts on loss to Duke: Tigers once again fail to finish, offense looks the same

Sep 5, 2023, 9:45 AM

Bingo on everything except the no downfield passing part.

Our offense does not have the physical capability to be successful often enough on deep shots. This is not on our receivers. Rather, our QB’s talents are not for downfield passes. This was in evidence in 2022, and hasn’t changed in 2023. Anyone who thought otherwise was thinking with their heart instead of their head.

Duke recognized this and had focused their safeties and LBs to playing the intermediate route passing lanes. Over the middle routes were not open.

Play calling reflected this deficiency, although your call in the ???? of RPO on early downs at the goal line was also spot on.

Helms possesses the arm strength and downfield accuracy to make deep shots a part of our offense’s arsenal.
