I am so tired...

Nov 14, 2022, 10:44 AM

of these school shootings and other senseless shootings. It is terrible. It is sad we cannot send our children and kids to school without the constant fear of them being shot. I cannot even begin to imagine what the families go through. As a society, we have to do better, and we have to figure this out. I am not saying shootings can be completely stopped but there has got to be a way to protect our children and kids. There is such a stigma with mental illness now a days that a lot of people are afraid to admit they need help.

Sorry T-Netters, I know this is not Clemson related so I apologize. I just feel so sad right now for the victims and their families.

Re: Mental health is not addressed, a taboo if it is and no $

Nov 14, 2022, 11:07 AM

I agree Bill. There is such a stigma attached to mental illness that many don't seek the help they need because they are afraid of being labeled, losing their friends, losing their jobs or being made to feel like they are not normal. When I lost my one and only child at birth, I thought my life was over. So many times, I wanted to check out of this World. It was horrifying and terrible. Most counselors and physiatrists don't even take health insurance, it has to be paid out of pocket, so a lot of people won't seek help for financial reasons.

For hundreds of years there has been access to firearms of all types with very few random killing sprees.

But what did conceive and grow alongside the cultural rot starting in the 90's is the invention of the internet and social media.

I'm not suggesting any abolition or prohibition of the web, but I am saying that people will make false correlations to shootings and guns while ignoring the obvious correlation factors.

There's absolutely no evidence to back that claim up. Does it desensitize you to it? Yeah to a degree. But it doesn't make anyone want to go commit murder. Just like playing Call of Duty doesn't make more people want to join the military. Media has always been used as more an outlet. Same with music, movies, art, etc. It let's frustrations out. And if someone can't distinguish fantasy or art from reality, then they're indeed not mentally there and need severe help.

I agree with your frustrations as is almost the entire country has the same frustrations about it. But we can't be making the same lazy accusations that we have for the last 30 years now.

overall, violent crime and murders are far lower today than in the 60s, 70s and 80s. In those days, assassinations and bombings/riots were more often the cause of violence. Since Columbine it has switched to these random mass shootings.

It's certainly a massive issue but it is not because of there being more violence as a whole or more evil people or something. It's the methods that change through the years, since ethe dawn of mankind.

I'm saying school shootings can be completely stopped. I've worked in sales the last decade now. I've travelled to most manufacturing facilities in the upstate if not every one. Every single one of these places are locked down better than schools. Workplace violence is talked about and condemned frequently. You don't really hear about mass facility shootings like you do schools. If our kids are gonna be sitting ducks at least lock the place down with an armed guard at a security gate. Metal detectors for buildings. Locked down office entry ways with silent alarms like banks. It's not rocket science.

Should all those things be in place at churches too? How about malls, theaters, concerts, medical offices, night clubs, apartment complexes?

Just wondering if you're OK with stepping through metal detectors at every place you go to and raising taxes to pay for increased police/security presence.

Re: I am so tired...

Nov 18, 2022, 5:22 PM [ in reply to Re: I am so tired... ]

It's not rocket science, it's money. K-12 public schools in SC don't receive state, federal, or local funds to provide such services. It's that simple, no one really wants to pay up (taxes).
About 90% of funds go toward required personnel so not a lot of excess is leftover for "extras". I served 31 years as cfo for 5 districts. I remember one "easy" budget in 31 years. Most years it was deciding what to leave out, not what to add. Eight of those years there were no raises for me or other administrators. Once or twice teachers didn't even get raises and the entire district had to take unpaid furlough days.
Best way to move up was change districts.
I can't debate the need, I'd like to see more secure schools too but it might mean higher pupil/teacher ratios or, Gawd forbid, higher TAXES.
Talk to state legislators and local school board members. And watch them point fingers at each other!
Just sayin'.

last 40 years, what has changed in our society that young people have so little value of life that murder is a justifiable action? There have always been instances of violent people among us but it seems to be much more common occurrence than it was when I was young.

Is it a growth in mental illness - if so why? Is it a loss of moral values that used to place a premium on life? Is it the inability of some young people to cope with anger, rejection, or some other emotion that leads them to commit violent acts?

Until we look in the mirror and start addressing/understanding the "why" and not just the "how" of the violence these tragedies are going to continue.

I was a community college faculty member when....

Nov 14, 2022, 4:25 PM [ in reply to Re: I am so tired... ]

.... the VT shooting occurred years ago. Probably because of my military background, the next day I went to my classroom stood where I usually teach, at the front of the room by the door, and asked myself, "You hear gunshots in the hallway. What do you do?" Took me less than 5 minutes to figure out the best way possible I could protect my students. I never expected it to happen. And, if it did, I might have panicked. But, I had a whole lot better chance to keep my head clear and act wisely because I had thought about it and made a plan.

I went to my office, sat at my desk and asked myself the same question. Because of the configuration of my office (no window in the door, second floor) it took less than 30 seconds to devise a plan.

Then I walked downstairs to our main faculty office (5 faculty members have private offices that all open to a common lobby that has a door in a wall that is all glass. (Anybody walking by can look into the commons area. 3 of the five offices had windows in their doors.) I asked them, "If you hear gunshots in the building, what would you do?" They all looked at me like I was crazy and said, "That would never happen here and laughed." I asked them again and two of them looked at me and said, "
Panic and call 911."

I would encourage anyone who works in a public area to take a few minutes and go through the mental drill, "What would I do if...."

Statistically, school shootings are still VERY rare and bringing more guns into schools I think creates way more opportunities for a child to be injured/killed vs. the chances they are killed in an actual planned shooting. Controlled access and an armed resource officer actually at their post would be way more effective IMO. I also understand this takes money/resources…well, it’s time we put up or shut up. Re: I am so tired...

Nov 14, 2022, 3:30 PM

There is no one perfect answer. THere are many factors that go into it and then there is the fact that we will always have f***ed up people that do things that defy logic and reason. Random people doing random stuff.

What keeps people in check (or not)? Religion. Family. Social convention. Media. Laws. Having a concept/construct of bsolute Right and absolute Wrong. Genetics.

I think what is going on today is due to a butterfly effect of lots of little changes that seem stupid or insignificant by themselves but add up over time.

Then there is the fact that bad stuff has always happened but before TV or when TV was more tightly controlled by the networks random violence in one part of the country might not make the 1hr national news, might not make the morning or evening paper that you get or if it did maybe a 1 in long single column on page 10 at best.

The real issue is that the general public is so easily mislead about what causes "mass shootings".

Almost always a crazy person in possession of an illegal firearm that LAW ENFORCEMENT was previously aware of.

It's a broken record, and people keep falling for it. We have a "well-funded crazy person" problem that needs to be looked into.

We should have stopped the courts from interfering with the raising of our kids when they first started threating to lock parents up for punishing their kids when they do bad things. Now the bad thing they do are unlimited bc there is no fear of punishment in the home where it must begin, not in schools or the courts, bc if we wait that late, it's already to late!!!
