Adding playoff teams will help. At least 12 of the best will hold their teams together and those should be interesting games. The rest won’t really matter other than to their own fan base.

Oh, and make all other bowls worthless as teams will lose all tranfers, opt-outs and drafts. Teams out of playoffs will be shells of themselves. Worthless to watch as a following season indicator.

Wait till 6 or 7 key players on teams 6-12 portal to one of the top 4 teams before the playoffs due to a better NIL deal. Then tell me what actually matters in this sport now.

bowl games to the FIRST game of the year. For example, make the Clemson vs. Georgia game the "Peach Bowl"....and you have TWO teams that are FULL THROTTLE with the WANT TO WIN attitude. Bowl games now are spring games on steroids....just a glamorous look at what might be next year...

Interesting take. Probably a great idea actually as everyone is starved for football and could get some season excitement at beginning of year. I kind of like it as I have fallen out of love with Bowl season. Just tuned into Mayo bowl, my first bowl watch this season.

That might be a great idea. Instead of rewarding teams for a winning record (in theory, anyway), use bowl games to kick off the season. Would probably require considerable work on teams' schedule. UGA v. Clemson is a homerun. Hard to find bowl sponsorship for Georgia v. UT Martin (UGA's 2023 opener).

I don't think it's a good idea. That is just trying to shoehorn a bowl designation onto what is really just a regular season game.

The truth is, bowl games are outdated. Honestly, they were stupid idea even at the beginning.

And you will see opt outs of the playoffs. Also the transfer portaljohn has to have different dates, because ur gonna have some of those not playing as well. Hopefully goes away. But this is not sustainable.

It is in trouble...the entitled don't find anything valuable in a college degree...after all they are majoring in sports leadership, sports communication, sports hypocrisy, etc..what about finance so they can spend the entitlements money wisely! Let's make up college majors so they really don't learn anything and then tell them how important a degree is!

Look how much it changed in 3yrs. Just think what it will be in another 3yrs. I haven't watched a Bowl game yet this yr and probably watched 25-28 last year. I am just tired of hearing about NIL and Portal. Not going to change without major rule changes.

This.

Time for the split - either you're a Student Athlete-based school or you are the semi-pro team directly employing players that license a school name and stadium.

Ain't no going back now.

I feel like 44 bowl games is too many given the lack of quality of product as a result of the opt outs and transfers. FBS needs to split into two levels (again) with 2 levels of playoffs. Probably 5–10 years away, expanded SEC/Big10, scooping up some ACC / B12 schools in the big money playoffs then everyone else with the former group of 5 schools in the lower tier.

I honestly feel like football needs to split off the conference scheme all together because schools like northwestern, vandy, etc really have no business in a super conference for football but add value in other sports and academics

Was just commiserating with a bunch of Clemson buddies about meaningless 1 sided bowl games due to all the opt outs. Then one reminded us all “yall can complain but I’m watching every game because in a couple of weeks college football will be gone for 8 months”. We all agreed and confessed we’d also be watching for the same reason.

The P5 Conferences as a whole took a major hit when Bama got bumped over FSU. While I think Bama is currently better team than FSU, doesn't mean it should have happened. FSU met all criteria as a P5 team to make playoffs but everyone knew there was no way they could bump the SEC out of playoffs.

I was happy with 4 CFP teams, I could live with 8 as there were likely a team like FSU that coukd get left off and I bet Bama would be ranked under FSU if there was 8 team CFP. But to jump to 12 teams is just a money grab and a major decrease in the need to go undefeated. The season is no longer the playoffs as Dabo always said.

Combined with a completely useless NCAA, the sport has suffered from fan fatigue in the past, but ESPN reported 2023 as being a record-high season for viewership.

Go figure.

ESPN is lying

they do that, you know? The only factor that would've brought more people interested in viewing CFB football in 23 would be the NFL losing a crapton of fans. Other than that, theres no way possible that stat is true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Normally, based on historical trends, I would agree.

Add in ESPN's undying support for all things "woke" (including Game-Day guest picker who is openly satanic & gay) and you'd have a recipe for disaster.

But the transfer portal's overt dysfunctional-use is by design. It gives good teams a head-ache while giving your run-of-the-mill garbage teams some form of hope....which leads to more fans watching their teams.

Add in the 12-team playoff and ratings will once again soar. Again, it's all about ratings - which have sucked for ESPN for years - but CFB is their flagship product and chaos seems to be creating, if nothing more, a whole sh it load of interaction from millions of once-dormant fans.
