A good number of you think the portal is the fix for our deficiencies. Let's examine this rationally.
Think of who we've lost. Some young guys who may have eventually become starters, but usually second or third string guys. Our second and third string guys are good enough to start elsewhere (usually at a lower tier school); this is a fact.
Now let's think of who there is for us to get from the portal. Who's gonna be there?
1. Players who were second or third string at THEIR schools who want a chance to start
2. Players whose coaches left and now they are rethinking where they want to play ball
3. Graduates who may have been starters elsewhere but want to play their last year with a team that has a shot at a conference championship or a national playoff spot.
What makes you all think that a lineman from Shorter College or Middle Tennessee State is better than a current backup who likes us, chose us, signed with us and just needs a little coaching up to get to the next level? Who would you run through a wall for--a coach like Deion who is trying to run you off, or a coach like Dabo who bleeds loyalty and would only sparingly use the portal?
If you were throwing around names of schools like Bama, Ohio State, or Georgia--true, their second string guy is likely better than our starter. We should go after THEIR castoffs. Is a starter at Shorter better than our second string guy, or high school kid coming in?
For every Joe Burrow or Jalen Hurts, there are a hundred guys that don't pan out. Remember that.

If Clemson was interested in these two recent portal transfers, Dabo must have had an interest in trying to get them? But Clemson is slow and cheap. Look at our results so far in the portal. Not great. The number will work against us. Why can other schools do it and beat Clemson to the player. We did'nt even get a visit from either of these guys! Everyone has to be a HS recruit? What about filling gaps?

It’s the way Dabo has decided to run his program. Has no bearing on being cheap. Wouldn’t you rather build your program with top high school recruits or pay stupid money to someone that may be a one and done and get stuck in that cycle. When will ND have a multi year starter at QB? Seems short sided to myself and expensive, but that’s how Freeman wants to run his program so more power to him. Just philosophical differences in the end.

Clemson is cheap? LOLOLOL! Wrong!
We sure do sink a lot of money into facilities, and 2nd highest paid HC in college football and some of the highest paid assistants in CF. Cheap? I don't think so.

Dabo thought a OL from Middle Tennessee State was better than we had so he pursued him. And this player had NIL ranked pretty low on his list per his former HC. FSU seemed to do pretty well with all their portal players.

Yep and now most are or will be gone. I believe you end up staying in that cycle until you start recruiting guys that want to be there for 3 years. Could get costly in the end and it better work out.

That shorter college linemen just committed to penn st. You make him out to be a scrub and that’s not the case. You don’t get the offers he did out of Shorter if you don’t have skills. Sorry but he would have been a really nice grab and prob would have competed for a starting spot.
