What is the worst storm that you experienced? For me it was Hugo and a small tornado.

Definitely Hugo. Although, for power outages, the Ice Storm

of the early 1970's (1972?) actually caused a longer power outage where I grew up about 4 miles from Santee. The ice was so thick on the power lines, it weighted them down until they snapped. And, it remained that cold for several days, and you could hear tree limbs smapping off in the forests around our place for several days. The ice was literally over an inch thick on just about everything. The only way you could even think about getting a car door open was to have a 5 gallon (more than one) bucket of hot water to pour around the edges to melt the ice away. Even then, you risked snapping the door handle off, that cheap pot metal gets brittle in the cold. It was not a fun time.

Oh I remember the ice storm. Seems that there was also a big snow storm around that time.

I think that ice storm was either '76 or '77. I was renting a mobile home on Lake Greenwood and listened to pine limbs popping all night. No power for at least a week and I was less than 2 miles from the power plant. Had to stay with a friends parents for several nights near Columbia until power came back on. Then the trailer was flooded by frozen pipes that thawed out - never want that experience again.

the one you are talking about, but around the Santee area, it was only about half as bad as the earlier one.

I lived in Florence and slept through Hugo. Went one day without power. My parents in Hartsville did not have power for 5 weeks.

But, life on the farm went on. My dad "back-powered" outlets in our house with two long extension cords and a WWII vintage generator. Probably not the safest thing to do, but he did it, and we had power. My mom had a gas stove, and they also had one of those fireplace insert "Black Bart" type heaters, so the house was toasty, and there was always hot food to eat! Country farm moms are the toughest, bestest in the world, I say without fear of contradiction.

Don't remember much from when I was 7 but I will never forget Hurricane Hazel. Was in Murrells Inlet. One scared little boy.

I was in a car up against a shopping Mall wall when HUGO passed. It was surreal when the calm eye passed and then it cranked up again. Rain was not falling down, but flying sideways so thick I could not see out the windows as the car shook.
I had to work 16 hour days for a couple weeks. Power was out at my house about two weeks.
Trees crushed my Wife's car and one hit our house. Neighbors cut them off as I was not available to take care of my own stuff.

junker automobiles parked pretty close to our house when Hurricane Gracie came through in 1959. I was 5 years old. I say semi junkers, because these still ran, and could have been drivable if desired. But, one of them, a 1950 Ford, got about an 18" diameter pine tree directly through the roof, and was squashed down to the frame. Had that tree fallen a different direction, it would have been through the roof of our house.
I told this before on here, but I was playing out in the wind in our front yard until it got up to about 70 mph, and my mom came to the front door with a belt in her hand, telling me to get inside. We later found the two wheel wagon I had been playing with in the front yard, about 15 feet off the ground in the branches of an oak tree, in our BACK yard after the storm.
Those are the only two memories I have of Hurricane Gracie, 1959 in South Carolina.

My dad was smart enough to evacuate us but to Charlotte! It followed us and pretty scary there too.
I will never forget that drive back to Charleston, unbelievable. The national guard had cleared the roads in record time, the lake in our backyard turned. No power for 2 weeks.
I worked at a grocery store at the time so I too was working 16 hour days for weeks. Everyone pulled together and was neighborly, helpful. Sure, there were a few grifters taking advantage but I was proud of my city!

Definitely it was Hugo!!! I was home from college, and we were five hours away from the coast and it hit and it looked like an F5 tornado had tore through the town. I called off from work, my dad was out of the country on business, and I had my gf come and spend the night and well it was an amazing experience in many ways. Where I worked, the roof partially came off and they had to send everyone home.
Still to this day cannot imagine how powerful it was for many of you closer to the epicenter at the coast.

Equally scary as a little kid we were up visiting some family friends in Ohio and the tornadoes hit Xenia Ohio just about 10 miles from where we were staying. Two F5 tornadoes destroyed the entire town of Xenia and there was 148 tornadoes that swept through with those storms. Scared as 5 or 6 year old boy

in York County. Trees down all around their property and they saw metal roofing blown off their barn which wrapped around tree trunks in one direction before the eye and was blown off the trunks in the opposite direction after the eye passed. Worst thing was no power for days after it passed .

in Orangeburg, about 2 AM. I had worked until midnite at the chemical plant, and drove home in 60-70 mph winds. My wife and I stayed up watching out the windows, and when the eye came through, I walked out in the back yard. I had never seen the stars look so clear and bright.
And then the wind reversed, and came back. I had a couple of Arrow small metal buildings in my back yard, and I was worried Hugo would take them. They made it through, but a similar one at my In-Laws did not. All that was left was the poorly poured concrete foundation, and a pile of rusted, twisted tin. I helped Pa-In-Law pour a bigger, better, actually LEVEL foundation on top of the old one, and put up a new, bigger lawn mower shed for him. I was In Like Flynn for life after that.

My dad still talks about Hugo and how he kept his chainsaw running all week helping neighbors in Mount Pleasant clear fallen trees and debris. He swears that the national TV coverage of Charleston and Mount Pleasant during Hugo is directly responsible for the influx of people from outside of the State moving to the lowcountry.

It happened back in 1960.
Hurricane Ian was touted as evidence of climate change.
However, I will point out that hurricane Donna in 1960 had a barometric pressure reading (indicative of the strength of a hurricane) that was LOWER than hurricane Ian.
I grew up in Ft. Myers, and I always remember people talking about their experience when hurricane Donna came through Lee County.

had just relocated to Biloxi MS about 6 months before Katrina. They were renting a house while building their dream home on what is called the Back Bay. As Katrina approached, most neighbors assured them they were safe, no need to evacuate... some of those old-timers had ridden out Camille in '69. It did not end well. The 30 foot storm surge did indeed reach them, and they found themselves on the 2nd floor of the house with the 1st floor totally flooded and waves crashing through the doors and windows. At one point the house was moved off it's foundation about 20 feet, and they watched some of their neighbors houses get washed out into the bay. They're extremely lucky to be alive.
And that was just the beginning. They were basically trapped, all the roads were washed out with power lines down everywhere, or there were boats, chunks of piers/houses, debris, etc piled up on the roads. The national guard had to pick them up a couple days later and take them inland. He said the first time they felt somewhat "normal" was about 2 months later when they had a pizza delivered to their hotel room. All the businesses were destroyed, including restaurants and grocery stores...

Lund Deep V Boat w/20HP Motor when all of a sudden 3'+ waves, sheeting rain and 30MPH winds. Took on a ton of water and motor kept stalling. Water was 45F and was fortunate not to pull an Edmond Fitzgerald.

September 15 1995. Hurricane Marilyn in St. Thomas. 90% of the structures on the island sustained damage and 60% lost the entire roof. We lost about half of our roof. The house just below ours literally imploded. Our daughter had just had her first birthday 2 days before and our son was 5. I don’t ever want anything to scare me like that again. We were under a mattress in about 3 inches of water by the time it was over. I was just so scared something might happen to the kids. The dairy processing plant I managed was across the road from our house and it was damaged so heavily the company ended up selling it. The generators did work and we were able to bring electric cable from Miami and get power back at our house in about 3 weeks. Showers were either in the rain or from a water hose outside for a month. The public utility didn’t restore power to our house for over 2 months. Funny story - we had the contents of 3 - 40 foot shipping containers of butter (approximately 120,000 pounds) in a freezer. Of course after the storm the ceiling and 2 sides of the freezer were gone and all the butter started to melt and run down the asphalt driveway making it almost impossible to get a vehicle or forklift to the freezer. We finally got the local authorities to let us bury what was left. We dug a huge hole with a backhoe and buried it. I’ve always said that some day there will be a huge oil slick off the coast of St. Thomas and no one will know where it came from 😂.
We were in South Florida for Andrew too. The plant I managed in Miami had some minor damage. We lived north outside Ft Lauderdale and had no damage at home. It was a very powerful but thankfully very small storm. Several friends and coworkers who lived south of Miami lost everything.
